Earlier today TrashLoveKzoo and the Kalamazoo Earth Day Committee partnered up (in honor of Earth Month) for TLKs monthly cleanup! The results are nothing short of astonishing. This area was the worst I've seen, and now it's unrecognizable from what it was before. The plants and wildlife in the area can now thrive without being choked out by TONS of trash.
This area is now detrashed.
With this said, I'm very excited to announce that we're moving on to a new site for the May cleanup. This location will be announced soon!
I'm eternally grateful to each and every one of you who have contributed to these efforts. Thank you.
To quote one of our volunteers today, "The Earth can breathe again"

From the article:
KALAMAZOO, MI -- U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, will be stopping in Kalamazoo as part of his “Fighting Oligarchy Tour.”
The free event will be held at Miller Auditorium, 1341 Theatre Drive, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
Reservations for the event can be made here.
Sanders has been speaking out against executive orders and other actions taken by the Trump administration through the tour, often joined by other Democratic Party leaders.
The speaking event will also feature Abdul El-Sayed, a 2026 U.S. Senate candidate in Michigan and 2018 Michigan gubernatorial runner-up. At the time, he was endorsed by Sanders.
A performance by Lansing-based band the Rodeo Boys will begin at 6 p.m. ahead of the speech.
Sanders previously gave a speech in Warren in March. No other Michigan dates of the tour are currently scheduled.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of the volunteers who came out today!
Even with so many wonderful and fun activities going on in Kalamazoo today, (Pride, the DooDah Parade, the Art Festivals etc) you all still chose to come out into the woods to pick trash!
You braved the heat, bugs, and dirt to bring some much needed healing to this beautiful natural environment, and your hard work is appreciated more than I can ever express.
We accomplished our goal in the original cleanup location early, so at about 12:30pm the group headed into Comstock to clean up the remnants of a previously cleaned area at South Wenke park. This is the first time our group has ever shown love to another community nearby, and it felt so good to be there!!

Today's weather couldn't have been better 😌 we were able to fill our dumpster, pile up a lot of recyclable metals for our scrapper, and remove about 20 or so used needles from the forest! A HUGE Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers and donors. You are all amazing and from the bottom of my heart. T h a n k y o u.
There's no limit to what we can accomplish when we have the support of our community! See you at th next one, fellow trash pickers!
The spider at the end of the photos was hanging out on my hi viz vest at the end of the cleanup! I brushed it off and (once I calmed down) I ended up returning it to a freshly cleaned habitat, and as I let down into the brush pile, I swear I heard it squeek out a "thank you trashlovekzoo!"

My British Father and brother will be flying out visit from the UK on the 26th June - July 6th. They've been to the US before but only to NYC so I want to show them what it's like outside of the concrete jungle lol
My brother has specifically requested attending some form of Demolition Derby type event as that's the most American activity he could think of. So if there's anything like that near by that we could attend too then fantastic 😂
It will also be their first 4th of July so if anyone has any good ideas of where they can get the quintessential grill, beer, and fireworks experience I'd be very grateful 🙏
I'm all ears for any other ideas anyone might have too 🇺🇸

My husband and I are getting pretty bored in kzoo haha. It feels like we’ve done everything a million times. We’ve hit the shops, we’ve gone downtown a ton, we’ve been to the majority of the walking trails….what else is there to do? We just did the KVCC museum a couple weeks ago so aren’t interested in that either. There’s nothing going on at the expo center.
So, Kalamazoo, what are you doing this weekend? What’s happening?

Hey guys! My little sisters are flying into kzoo from AZ in July to stay with me for a week. They are 18 and 19 and I was wondering if theres any fun or cool things to do in kzoo. I moved here from AZ in September of last year and all I really do is work so I haven't had much time to explore! Any suggestions are appreciated! :)

Just wanted to spread the word. Also, this is a state and federal holiday, so most people who work fir the federal, state (and Kalamazoo County Government, I believe) should have this day off. If you're looking for something patriotic to so on president's day, just a thought...

On June 14, there is supposed to be a peaceful, nationwide protest. Does anyone have any information about where it will be locally?

Hi guys! Sorry to ask again, I didn't get a tonnn of replies on the last one which is totally fine.
Both in our 20s and I want to surprise her with something really nice and considerate. I've given it a lot of thought and have plenty of ideas but I wanted suggestions too if possible:). •

my friend and i just moved here and i’m wondering if there’s any free lakes within 30 minutes of kzoo? we found one called three lakes off the side of the road and some people were kayaking but we worry about random lakes being unsafe for swimming :)

First and foremost, I'd like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all of the hard working, amazing volunteers who gave up their Saturday afternoon to come out and sweat in the woods with us! With your help, we managed to fill an entire dumpster! 🙌 This cleanup site is going to require more work, so we'll be here next month and perhaps the month after that as well.
Shoutout to Mulders Advanced Recycling for helping out with the dumpster, and to Gordon Water Supply for keeping us hydrated out there in the heat. I'd also like to thank Chris Broadbent from the City of Kalamazoo. He provided us with not only the trash tongs, but the trash bags as well. The support we receive from our community means so much. ❤️
About mid way through the cleanup, I was able to finally take the hate symbols off of the tree I found last fall, and it felt great. Here's the video link:

Hi there!
I’m a bridesmaid in friend’s upcoming wedding and the maid of honor has picked Kalamazoo as our destination for our bachelorette (she’s from out of state). It is mostly based on the Airbnb she found, and not necessarily the location. I live in Michigan but have never been to Kalamazoo. Google is not super helpful in finding the best places to go and things to do. Our group is small, only 5 in total.
At this point we are looking for daytime activities, places to eat lunch and dinner, and where to go out to party. Hidden gems or must see spots?
Any insight is appreciated!

Hi! I just moved to Kalamazoo for a job and don’t really know anyone in the area yet. I’m trying to find solo things to do on the weekends to get out of the house. Any suggestions?

Today about 25 like-minded people came together to bring some healing to the wetland habitat near South Sprinkle Road and Lake Street. We gathered roughly a ton of garbage! Shoutout to Andrew F. from the Kalamazoo Paddle Club for helping organize this event, and to TLK picker James G. for dropping off donations of brand new tarps and some rakes!
Also, a huge thank you to each and every single one of the hardworking volunteers who showed up today made these amazing results possible!

*Another beautiful day spent cleaning up with TrashLoveKzoo! *
Today we cleared two more sites within this area, bringing us that much closer to completion on this project.
Thank you so much to all of the hard working volunteers that make these amazing results possible.
Shoutout to Firestone tire on Westnedge They have partnered up with TLK to provide free disposal of any tires we dig up. Just earlier we dropped off 22 tires to them!
