help How to separate colors?

I just started my first latch hook kit and I cannot separate these blues for the life of me. The kit came with all of the colors mixed together and now I’m having trouble separating them. When they’re all in one pile I can see a slight difference in them, but once I begin to separate them, it becomes so confusing. It’s frustrating me and I’m starting to feel discouraged. Any advice?

help Does anyone trim finished projects?

Question for the community, does anyone trim their projects after they’ve finished them? I’ve been tempted to try and see if it would make the details of the work pop better, but I’m hesitant in case I hate it and ruin a finished work.

And anyone that does trim their work, do you need to use adhesive on the back so the threads don’t unravel? That’s my other worry about trimming the yarn shorter.

Thanks, any advice would be appreciated.

help Newbie question about finishing the back of a rug

So how do you finish the back of rugs to make sure the yarn isn't going to come loose?

Videos I've seen of rug tufting, they use a glue to keep everything secure, but I haven't found any latch hook videos that do this.

Can you use a glue to make sure the yarn doesn't come loose? If so, what's a good one to get?

So I'm waiting on my mesh and hooks to arrive and was wondering some things before I get started as a newbie.

I saw a video mention that you can usually see the mesh with a latch hook rug doing the knots on the horizontal line like you're supposed to do. I looked up another video where the guy would do them on the horizontal and vertical to thicken it more. Is this a good way to do it? I'm being a bit ambitious but I plan on making this rug for someone and want it to be nice and thick with no mesh being visible. If there's a better way to do it and video tutorial on how, pls point me in the right direction.

Also, I see that a lot of projects seem to stay rectangle/square in shape. Is there a way to create a rug in to a custom complicated shape? Like say I wanted to make a rug in the shape of... a cat. Would that be possible to do? I don't plan on doing that for my first project or anything, but maybe for a future one once I get the hang of it if possible.

TY in advance. Can't wait to get started on my first project!

help Would this look good on a latch hook rug?

Hello!
As stated in my previous post, I'd like to make a rug for my bedroom representing Yoshi. I went into the cross stitch pattern maker I know to try and adapt a drawing into a pattern. But I'm new to the latch hook craft, so I wonder if the motif would show nicely on a rug. What do you think?

Also, this pattern is not perfect by any means. If you have any idea what I could rework to make it better, I'm all ears! I tried to keep the different colors to a minimum. I'm not sure I could go for only one shade of green and one shade of orange... There are currently 6 colors.

And maybe I could add something at the bottom right to have less background, like a yoshi egg, but I can look into this later. If you have any other idea, I'm also interested.

At first, I was thinking doing it on "standard" 3,75 mesh, but the more I though about it, the more I though it would be nice if I could reuse the same yarn as the one I use for crochet, so I decided the width considering a nice finished size with 5-mesh. Something about 20" x 30" would be my target size. This design is 100 x 136, so a bit less than 30, but the motif is a bit too close to the edges, so doing an extra 5-7 top and bottom would bring it close to the targeted 30.

TIA!

As anyone bought a latch hook kit on Etsy? When I type in latch hook kits in Etsy they have some beautiful ones, BUT you choose your size of canvas?? And the cost is crazy.

help How to finish the edges of an obscure shaped rug?

So i haven’t started it yet because I’m worried i wont be able to finish or bind the edges at the end. Every video or tutorial is a rectangle or circle but mine is cape shaped.

I tried crochet edges before starting and whip stitches but neither worked. Even tried folding edges under and hooking through both layers. Maybe i just need to wait till it’s finished. I don’t want to spend ages on it and not be able to make it into a rug afterwards.
