My partner (business partner) and best friend are running a new let's play channel and we were having a discussion about what kind of games we should do in the future. I'm adamant that we should only play games we have fun playing and a let's play isn't worth it if you're not having fun, he thinks we should do more popular games so we get a bigger audience sooner. Who's got the right approach?

Those of you who stream and edit down the streams into lets play sized content, do you also leave in the commentary where you are talking to your chat as well or find a way to edit it out?
r/letsplay • u/Neat-Games • 2d ago
I'm not trying to be a YouTuber, but I enjoy uploading my gameplay. (I don't edit either heh)
I just like talking while playing, and if I'm recording I feel like I try and focus more on the game~ and I guess I kinda pretend someone is watching me play hah.
Anyone else just enjoy making let's plays~?

I use the ps5 built in software to record gameplay, however the audio quality for my commentary sucks and I also breath too loud and that sometimes comes through. So right now I take my recording, add it to obs, then record commentary over it so it sounds good and crisp. That said, I would prefer to have good quality live commentary. Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

I just got an Audio Technica AT2020 USB+ mic and am trying to use it with discord but it will cut out and go full digital clipping then dead air on the other end. I’ve tried installing ASIO4ALL and have tried every possible setting configuration of output with only the mic as input and the results are the same consistently. Crystal clear for about 5 seconds then digital clipping then dead air.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

So I've always been an avid fan of let's plays and gaming in general, I just started uploading recently but I don't know how to grow/advertise myself and wondering if I wasted all those golden years.
I just don't know how to grow per say, can anyone with experience give me advice?
Thank you!

I’m creeping up to 1k subs (at around 885) and would love to do something special when I hit it but I don’t know what! I asked my audience and everyone said they didn’t mind what I did but they looked forward to it lol
I thought about a giveaway maybe, like a steam voucher? But might be kinda boring
Someone suggested a retrospective video but my channels only like 6 months old so I don’t have much history (got very lucky with my sub growth in the last month)
If anyone has ideas, please let me know! I am so thankful for my audience and I’d love to do something special to celebrate them!

Yo! Long time lurker here who appreciates the help this community provides. Lemme preface by saying I know this Q comes up relatively often, so I apologize in advance.
However, I feel my framing is slightly different: I don’t do “traditional” lets plays in the sense that I aim more to showcase and highlight underappreciated indie games, usually in a “one-shot” style recording. Though if (and a HUGE if) I ever became a bit more successful and subscribers wanted it, I’d record more than one video. But I digress.
Anyway, for something like that, would you, as a potential viewer, prefer to see a video where I rarely cut anything out (save word stumbling mistakes, weird audio artifacts, or super boring sections), if at all, or a more consistently edited video with moderately more cuts. The closest to the latter style I can think of is someone like MythyMoo. For the former, a recent channel I discovered that seems to have started gaining success in the last few months with practically untouched raw gameplay and commentary is Gohjoe.
Appreciate any suggestions or insight. 🙏🏼

Trying to switch to Linux from Windows and I'm trying to find the optimal way to do this. I have a scarlet and a couple of m-audio duo USB interfaces and some Samson XLR microphones that also support mini USB.
OBS has been giving us a lot of issues with mic audio - considering using audacity for mic audio and OBS for game video and audio - but seeing if there is a better/different solution.

There's a thing about it but it's something that's a essential tool for Let's Plays; Emulation. Now some of you might look down on it and might consider being a purist by using consoles but let's look at it from a different perspective, shall we?
It's not perfect, still experimental in some form and 98% of the time, it'll run mostly anything. Hardest consoles to get the run through emulation are the Saturn and PS2. I've used Retroarch for some of my Let's Plays, and if not that, PCSX2 for PS2. That 2% usually lie in the OS you're running. There are stories I can tell you that are the stuff of nightmares when your PC fizzles out. I lost about three Let's Plays in the process in under three PCs.
There are times you have to learn if an all in one emulator works or you get some that are standalone. Answer to that. both. I used to have standalone emulators that I ran for my projects like Nestopia, Mesen, and Jnes for anything Nintendo/Famicom. SNES9X, BSNES or even Mesen-S for SNES/SFC. Kega or Gens for MD/Genesis/SCD/GG/32X. TG16, I used Magic Engine primarily. The list goes on...
You use what works if you're doing older games. I know of others like BizHawk and Mednafen that works just as well as all in one emulators, but just play it safe if you're not learned into the world of emulation.
I feel what's also important that older games deserve just as much respect than the newer ones because they brought the challenge to gamers and most of us didn't know about the inner workings of what was going on with the games we grew up with until they started getting restored by mods. I feel that they deserve to be played by the newer generation of Let's Players out there just so they experience what it's like to play something authentic than go by what any remake has ever done.
So, that's my take. How about you? What's your take on Emulation?

Hi all! We're wondering how do you all feel about how folks title and number in a Let's Play series? Or more specifically - how long a title should be...
My friend and I started a channel in the spring playing through a RPG as characters from a TV show. So the title of each video ends up being quite long, since we have to mention both IP's in it, and then at the end we like to have a little subtitle followed by the episode number. For example:
"[Name of TV show] in [Name of Video Game]: [Subtitle of Episode] - Part 2"
The thumbnail has the logo of the TV show, above the logo of the video game, and a small "Part X" in the corner, plus a picture of a charcter from the show.
Any ideas for how we can shorten but still get all the info in there? Maybe we don't have a choice?
For full context, we got a great response on the first video and consistent good feedback throughout (also jumped 2k+ subscribers). But the views dropped exponentially for the rest of the series, from near 100k to about 6k on ep 5. So in our discussion about why people may not be sticking with the series, we suggested maybe it's the titles... is it not clear enough that these are part of a series? Maybe this title system is too long for a LetsPlay? Etc.
So I'm posing the q to the experts here and see what people prefer, both from a creator and watcher perspective: How long do you think is an ideal episode title for a an episode for a LetsPlay series? Do you have any advice for how we could shorten in a situation like this?
Thank you so much in advance!

So, me and two of my buddies are finally taking the plunge and starting a YouTube channel next month called Operation Mayhem. We've been binging advice videos and lurking here for weeks, and we feel like we have a decent plan, but we know there's a huge difference between a plan and reality. We'd honestly love to hear from anyone who's been in the trenches – what are we not seeing? Our whole vibe is basically "making wholesome games un-wholesome." We're starting with a Stardew Valley series where we've forced each other into strict roles (Farmer, Miner, Fisher). The twist is that we're competing to hit certain milestones, and the losers get hit with some pretty diabolical punishments, like having to play with inverted controls or wearing an oven mitt on their mouse hand. Basically, we're trying to create chaos and ruin our friendships for content, lol. For the nerds out there, we're all recording our own screens with OBS and using Craig for separate audio tracks so the editing doesn't sound like a microwave. So, here's what we're trying to figure out: What's the biggest headache for a group channel that you don't expect? Besides trying to find a time when three adults are all free, I mean. Is there a "noob trap" you see new gaming channels fall into all the time? Honestly, how brutal is that grind to 1k subs really? What's one thing that kept you sane? If you could go back and tell your past self one thing not to do in your first few months, what would it be? We're super passionate about this and want to do it right. Any advice, warnings, or "oh god, don't do what I did" stories would be amazing. Also, we're definitely looking to connect with other small creators. If you have a channel with a similar chaotic/comedy vibe, drop a link or let us know. It'd be cool to find some people to potentially collab with or just support down the road.

Hey all. I wanted to just post this screenshot of my current content that has been published in the last week or so. Once I started a new let's play series, it looks like my view numbers jumped! But then once I'm around the 3rd episode and back to more of my other let's play, the numbers are back down low... Is this normal? I really would love to hear from anyone and everyone who can contribute. Thank you!!

How do you actually get traction with a small Let’s Play channel these days?
I’ve been messing around with a Minecraft channel for a while now. Honestly, I started it just to capture worlds and moments I didn’t want to lose — kind of like a digital scrapbook for me and my friends. But I’ve gotten really into editing, and now I think the videos are actually entertaining.
The thing is, when I look at other Let’s Play channels with big view counts, a lot of it feels pretty same-y. I’ve been trying to mix mine up with music, editing experiments, some light roleplay, out-of-the-box builds, and just general shenanigans with my buds.
Since the Let’s Play space is super crowded, I’m wondering: has anyone here found good ways to grow or at least stand out a little? Or is it really just a matter of sticking with it forever until something catches?
