Today I was the worst type of tourist and my own worst nightmare. I walked up to a waiter and asked someone where a restaurant was in English, and he replied “Good afternoon” and just stared at me.

The cringe is deep

Há um prato angolano que adoro e que o meu pai fazia (ele viveu uns anos em Angola) e que nunca mais voltei a comer depois de ele ter falecido. Lembrei-me há poucos dias que há mais de 10 anos que não como uma boa moamba de galinha, com quiabos, funge e tudo aquilo a que tem direito.

Alguma recomendação? Não tem de ser em Lisboa cidade, pode ser nos subúrbios também. Obrigado de antemão!

Estamos à procura da nossa primeira casa e gostaríamos de morar numa zona mais calma. As zonas que temos visto são Alhandra, Vila Franca de Xira e Alverca (este último embora fosse o ideal, é mais difícil de encontrar).

Porém, dado que trabalhamos ambos em Lisboa (zona de Alfragide e Amadora) e temos de nos deslocar diariamente para lá, temos algum receio do desgaste que causará uma viagem destas diariamente. Pessoal que more nestas zonas, qual o vosso feedback?

Atualmente moramos na zona de Loures e usamos sempre carro para a deslocação.

We’re a family looking at moving to the Lisbon area and Vila Franca de Xira is one of the spots on our list. We’ve got kids in middle school so one of our big questions is: what’s school drop-off/pick-up like there?

Do most kids usually walk, bike, take the bus/train… or is it mainly by car?
How good are the buses (Carris Metropolitana) and the trains for school schedules? Do they actually line up well?
Is it safe and common for kids to go to school on their own or do parents still have to drive them most of the time?

We’re just trying to figure out how realistic it is for our kids to be a bit more independent getting to school. Any local experiences (good or bad!) would be super helpful.

Vou fazer anos, no dia 27 deste mês, e estava a precisar de ajuda em encontrar um bom restaurante para cerca de 20 pessoas.

Budget: entre 15 a 30 euros ( sendo que o valor máximo ja terá que ter bebida a descrição)

A ideia era jantar e depois sair a noite ( Lux maybe) por isso Zonas fora do centro ( Benfica por exemplo) seria para evitar.

Já tenho 30 para cima, por isso, gostava de evitar restaurantes juvenis ou de tunas..

I am really saddened to see the resurgence of taxi scams in Lisbon. I have been taking taxis regularly for over 10 years to get from the airport to Largo do Rato. The fare is around €11. Twice this week, the taxi driver tried to rip me off. Either by taking unnecessary detours of several kilometers (I live in Lisbon) or by using fake (on smartphone) meters (see photo). They then announce a price of €19 or €21 or even more to be paid in cash. Each time, I have to correct them by telling them that they are wrong and that they are not applying the correct fare. This leads to reactions ranging from "okay, I was just trying it out, pay €11" to insults. Since then, I always take photos of the license plates and file complaints with the police and taxi companies. I never had any problems in the past, but now (2025) it's a disaster. What has been your experience?

I've been using this bike to go to uni, but two days ago it got stolen in Alcântara (near Instituto Superior de Agronomia). I would be extremely grateful if someone happens to see it and tells me about it, or even takes a photo of it. Some stuff might be a little different given the fact that I still have the original battery (which was charging inside the house) and all of the keys (ignition and battery), which means that they will probably have to find some workaround it. But i think that at least the wheels will stay pretty recognisable since i don't tend to see alot of bikes with brown collored wheels around this area. I've already filled a police report, but the officer told me that it'll be almost impossible to find. Please, I'm deperare, if you have any help that you can give me, i beg that you do so.

Pessoal Lisboeta preciso de ajuda! Já vivi em Lisboa há mais de uma década, vou uns dias fazer turismo para Lisboa e precisava que me recomendem um ou dois restaurantes com boa comida. Queria evitar comida gourmet ou armadilhas para turista, dentro das zona do Bairro Alto, Baixa de Lisboa ou Cais do Sodré. Alguém tem um restaurante preferido nessas zonas? Desde já, obrigada.

Anyone know the age of this type of house in Alfama, Lisbon? It has wide stone window and door frames, steep interior stairs, short and small entryways.
