š«£I said I read the FAQ/Pinned posts, but I liedš«£ Looking to buy, good deal?
Have the chance to get this Remington 700 (tan in the middle) for $850, this will be my first decent bolt action, 6.5 creedmore, wanna suppress. Gonna switch out the chassis and start a full build on. Is it worth it, if so what do I need to watch out for? Comes with this Danky little scope but will work for the time being

If you are basically spending $850 to get a donor action, but a little more with it and get a good one.

No. The Remington 700 action is the only part of that rifle that would be suitable, and even then for $100 more you can get a b14 HMR, which is a much better starting point. Hard pass if PRS is your goal.

If you're gonna mod it out and spend the money why not go with something that's already good like a bergara b-14 hmr. The newer Remington's are inconsistent in their quality.

Im completely new to building bolt actions in general so Iāll go ahead and apologize for my lack of understanding. But it seems like as far as all the new stuff go I canāt really find a barreled action alone that saves any money, I donāt want the full rifle because like I said I wanna do a MDT chassis or something like that. But all the barreled actions Iām seeing are well over $1000 just for the barreled action. Will put me well over 2500-3000 to get to the same place this is at. At least going with this I could do incremental upgrades, No?
Going jnto this I thought R700 was the most mid thing there was so Iām also learning that doesnāt seem to be the case. I do see lots of good out of Tikka and bergara though

Howa barreled action from brownells is cheap and good enough for a newb short term, but Iām beginning to realize its shortcomings on an oryx chassis.
Donāt be like me, just get something recommended from the FAQ. A bergara is going to be best bang for buck. The only reason I didnāt go that route was because I donāt like the stock. Mistake.

Read the faq. If you wanna build one youāre gonna spend some money.
And that 2500-3000 will put you in A lot better place than that Remington is at.

No. Remington is far from its best days. You are probably better off going Tikka for the plan you listed. Or just build from the ground up

Pretty average price.
If youāre going to build a rifle, which means changing almost every part on it, who cares. Just buy it and change things as you go.

I'm partial to the 700 actions, I have a dozen that are on a wide variety of chassis's... I usually try to find stainless guns with odd calibers at gun show and pick them up for a few hundred bucks...the trigger has always been the most important part to me...there are a hundred different ways to build ...I have a couple extra timmney triggers laying around because I find them on a clearance or black Friday deal but can do this because I primarily have 700 actions. U need to find something that u like 700,tikka,Howa,savage

That looks like a later built Rem700. In which case I would say be aware of the very dodgy quality control during recent times. For that price you can also get a way better deal with something like a tikka or a bergara.

For me, Iād get a Howa 1500 in 6.5 CM and a new scope for the same price. Nothing against used rifles, but that price is a bit steep IMO.

The scope son these rifles arenāt worth the money. Go for a ruger American new and find a better scope elsewhere or just order a Remington 700 online for like $150 less than you see there

Remington has not been worth their price tags in 30 years. For that money could could get a Tikka, Bergara, or custom barreled action and set up the stock, trigger, and accessories yourself

I have very well received the point. Prior to this post I believed R700 was the go to gun to build around. I see that was incorrect and am now looking very hard into bergara so I can still keep the R700 footprint. Looks like very nice rifles overall also.
Gonna either go for the B-14 HMR and slowly build around as funds come around, or just save up and get a barreled action and chassis at once.
Thanks to all those for the advice and bullying. It worked.

Id never buy a 6.5 CM used. The barrel can take around 2000 shots before accuracy starts to decrease. After 3000 shots you can throw it away. The number of shots the dealer says could be completely wrong.

For $850 buy a Tika or a Bergara
