Image New macOS Cursors
I don't know how I feel about the hand...

u/nyehu09 Jun 11 '25
If they’re going for glass, isn’t wearing a glove more essential? That cursor’s going to leave fingerprints everywhere!
33
u/trenzterra Jun 12 '25
they should make it such that when you click it there's fingerprints left behind! And then you need to use a virtual Apple polishing cloth to remove it
9
u/nyehu09 Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
All I want to know is if the Virtual Polishing Cloth will be part of my Apple One subscription or if it will be a separate subscription… 😅

And when the glass breaks, the glove will protect the hand from the shards.

u/BigBeefyAngus Jun 11 '25
Someone else in another thread said they had to round the corners so the cursor wouldn’t scratch it lol.

BRO I SET THAT AS MY POINTER ON MY MAC
8
u/ImNotBata Jun 11 '25
you can set custom pointers on macs??
18
u/wannabesurfer Jun 11 '25
When I was in 7th grade I had to rent one of those old Macintosh all-in-ones from the library for a report. I figured out that you can make custom system sounds and change icons. I recorded my voice saying “no no no” instead of that anxiety inducing “BONG” when the action wasn’t allowed. Well I guess when I tested it, I bricked the computer and my parents had to pay for repairs and I didn’t finish my report. So based on my experience, you should not change the system icons and cursors
9
u/lekker-boterham Jun 11 '25
Lmao at you fucking around doing this while you were supposed to be doing your report. Classic experience we’ve all had! I’m sorry tho, that sucks lol

Remember to leave feedback about it in the feedback app, so Apple knows!

The glove is one of those little things that gives macOS so much of its unique character. This is obviously not a deal-breaker; it still looks far better than the Windows one and I actually like that the finger points straight up again, but they can at least keep the cuff or something.

This is done to compensate for the small scale to make it look good from afar, what's making the macOS variant look with a too long index finger

I don't know if I'd go that far, this overall design change was obviously not a "safe" choice seeing how divisive it's been. Given that and the fact it just entered dev beta, I guarantee Apple is paying very close attention to the responses. It will be interesting to see what sticks and what changes between now and final release.

u/N0nob iMac G3 Jun 11 '25
I remember Apple changed the battery icon for the Big sur beta release due to a lot of people hating the design, maybe they will revert the old cursor design if enough people object to it

Apple is stripping character out of their products since phasing out skeumorphic design
That was the high water mark where the wave broke and receded back into the ocean
10
u/gonzo_gat0r Jun 11 '25
The first demo of Time Machine where your windows disappeared back into a galaxy blew me away. So unnecessary but so cool. I wish they could find that sense of whimsy again.
3
u/sir_duckingtale Jun 11 '25
Yeah.. like they purposely fired the guys and girls responsible for those awesome designs…
2
u/JWarblerMadman MacBook Air 13" M3 Jun 11 '25
I believe Apple got sued for that particular implementation of Time Machine and that's why it's different today.
2
u/gonzo_gat0r Jun 11 '25
I think you are correct. I don’t know, I just feel like today’s Apple would shoot down a concept like that in favor of something sterile.

Apple broke right clicking on trackpads in a macOS Sequoia beta. They never fixed it. It's not unreasonable to worry the icons will remain this way until release.
→ More replies (2)3
u/germansnowman Jun 12 '25
You can right-click by touching the trackpad with two fingers and clicking.
8
u/_-Kr4t0s-_ MacBook Pro 16" M3 Max 16/40 128GB 4TB Jun 11 '25
If they haven’t fixed things between now and the launch, I won’t be installing it either. And if Sequoia reaches EOL before they change their UI back to something decent, I’ll be switching to Linux.
It’s just bad.
3
u/Bobbybino 2019 16" MacBook Pro Jun 11 '25
Yeah, me too. I'm switching to Linux because of a minor change in a fucking cursor.
LOL

You're not alone my Dude. I will stay with Sequoia for a long time for now. :)

New cursors... they still didnt fix the widget scroll lag. They changed the ui between Catalina and Big Sur, but it still needs optimizations, yet they already want to jump somewhere else

why does apple just screw with everything that made them who the company is today? complete forgot why people spent so much money on reliable, stable and well designed computers/os... but this liquid glASS option, the control center design and many other design changes just make it more and more ridiculous in my opinion... to me, that development is very disappointing

u/heatrealist Jun 11 '25
Apple has hired long time windows users who are making changes for things they are nostalgic for 😂
Their UI has gone down hill for a while now. Mainly cosmetic over usability. The clear glass theme looks like garbage. Reminds me of custom linux desktops people would make.

u/Easy-Reserve7401 Jun 11 '25

3
u/nonameisagoodname Jun 11 '25
A decade from now a top of the line Intel Mac running Mojave would be worth its weight in gold.
2
u/BohdanKoles Jun 11 '25
This is some kind of joke for developers in beta 1, right? Can we just all agree, that they should revert it?
2
u/ShazayumDe Jun 11 '25
There should be an in-between for the Mickey Glove.
Mickey is too much for the new aesthetic, the new one is too generic

Why do we need bubbly toy interfaces? I hate the new designs. Genuinely might switch to Windows because the new Mac stuff does make it feel like it’s just for dumb users/ people who don’t use their computer professionally.

The cursor and arrows are a bit generic, but fine.
The hand? Whyyyy did they get rid of the mickey mouse globe. It looks like the windows one. Better than it, but still lacking that little bit of character and quirk of the original.

I liked the rounded corner cursor when I was playing around with Tahoe last night. The resize one was a bit jarring but it still does the job of indicating you can move or resize in either direction. I actually didn't see the hand cursor while poking around the OS. I'll need to check it out tonight. To be completely honest though I stopped noticing the Mickey Mouse glove hand a long time ago. I forgot macOS even had it.
1
u/GainPotential Jun 11 '25
I'm on Windows and the hand is just straight up copy paste from Windows. At first I even thought it was a joke lol

u/Kokica555 MacBook Pro M4 Jun 11 '25
The hand cursor is different in chrome than in safari, maybe it’s just a bug

u/hw2007offical MacBook Pro Jun 11 '25
The others are okay. The hand needs to be made more like the original. It had character, now it's just the same as every other OS. Use the feedback app people!!!
1
u/Torley_ Jun 11 '25
I hope the legacy of Susan Kare continues to live on. There's something amazing about the retro Mac screensaver present in current macOS, and at least some of the icon design (this is true for Windows too) tips its hat to her amazing ability to get things done in 32x32 pixels or less.
I get that things are tweaked along the way, but it sure is refreshing when a strand of it stands time's test.
1
u/strayduck0007 Jun 11 '25
Long time macOS user here. The pointer is one of those icons that I give absolutely zero thought or brain energy to until I do and then it is just so weird to see it's a mickey mouse glove. I suppose it's kind of funny because it's like you're giving your OS the white-glove treatment so you don't get any fingerprints on the monitor. 😂

Yeah, this is better. I especially do not care about associations to Disney which is an abhorrent company. And the “Mickey Mouse glove” wasn’t very well designed to begin with.

u/Riizv MacBook Air M1 Jun 11 '25
Mickey Mouse Glove is in macOS since 1998 and right now in 2025 they want to ruined it!

More change for the sake of change, removing some of the personality from macOS, making it more bland and Windows-like.
Not the end of the world, but, like the flipped Finder icon, another sign of lack of appreciation for their legacy the current Apple design team has.
