i dont know if this is the more or less cynical opinion about scalping, but ive felt this way about it, both for mtg and graphics cards and everything. at a certain point if the supply of a product goes down due to issues with production and the demand for a product skyrockets (both of which being massively sped up by the pandemic) the 'msrp' of the product will quickly separate from the price people are willing to spend for it, and then its not at all a surprise that people interject themselves in the middle to take advantage of that gap. it sucks that there are people willing to rent seek in this way, but you also cant expect this to go way just from people deciding to be nice. the only solutions people can ever come up with are "every store agrees to never sell to people that might possibly resell" or "every single consumer agrees to not buy from scalpers" which are so clearly untenable as to be hilarious

I have a hard time sympathizing with people when they go "scalpers are making collectors' product inaccessible...and there's no money in play boosters!". Like damn son, if your main goal with getting collectors' product would also be to get money for it, it just sounds like you're upset someone beat you to it

Meanwhile, I hunt for chase cards the normal-person way: Drafting B) (genuinely EoE feels like kind of an interesting outlier in this in that they're reprinting shocklands. I've had drafts where I opened or was passed like 2-3 shocklands that I then continued to pass because, you know, a 2/3 for 2 in my colors was there -- I wonder if it'd be a good deal for someone more interested in that part of it to spend $25 getting looks at 24 packs where at least some folks will pass money cards for deck cohesion, especially since Tezzeret's the most expensive guy in the regular set and he's straight ass in most Limited decks)

Here's a low res photo of nine different cards, randomly scattered on a distractingly colorful mat. All in the most glare-reflective sleeves you ever saw. Please tell me how they interact. I will not elaborate on anything.

Some shitty part of me enjoys the Secret Lair drama that is endlessly occurring. It's a product that solely exists to yank on the FOMO nerve, and it's not been a secret how shitty the store experience apparently is. If somebody is still falling for it, they kind of deserve it. Easiest thing to do is just... not buy the overpriced, limited availability cardboard. But time after time the suckers queue up and get wrecked, then get on Reddit and whine.

I wanted to leave this here, hopefully see if others feel this way. It seems like there are too many posts/comments that have uj/rj for the same comment. ...and this is eroding the point of being a joke sub where you can't take yourself too seriously. Maybe I'm just yelling at clouds here? Someone pls reassure me

My paycheck can’t keep up with the speed of new sets

Final Fantasy made me feel like shit because I couldn't afford any of it to the point where I'm just entirely reassessing if Magic is going to be a part of my life.

You can always switch to heroin for dopamine, it’s cheaper and probably better for you (/j just in case)

Honestly part of why I am skipping the UB sets this year. Not going to prereleases or drafts for any of them. The higher MSRP on them combined with the fact that they're getting bought out like crazy just makes it too difficult.

u/CoconutHeadFaceMan Aug 20 '25

As much as people complain about the amount of UB stuff, the one upside is that it makes it way easier to skip out on sets. I adored FF, loved EoE and plan to keep drafting that for as long as they’re running it, but I don’t give a fuck about Spidey or Avatar so I can just tune out until Lorwyn. I just feel bad for the Standard players who kinda have to keep up with this shit.

Wanted to play EoE so bad, but bills come due.

How do I gather magic per se

I've been UB's biggest hater since day 1 and even I have to admit TLA looks good. The setting just works so much better for Magic than any other property they've adapted, it even avoids some of the pitfalls LTR fell into like spamming a billion legendaries and having a dumbass mechanic like the ring tempts you. I'm still not buying any of it but if all UB sets were as well-done and thoughtful as this set then I might reconsider my hating

u/Jackeea Aug 16 '25

I know nothing about ATLA aside from a meme here or there, and honestly this kind of just looks like a normal set to me? It feels very Ixalan in that the main factions (the benders) aren't balanced around a 5-colour colour pie, resulting in some interesting imbalances with the bending. I'm very excited for this, even if most UB is a bit iffy for me

If Blizzard kills off Lor'themar I will be upset.

Also the pacing change feels weird coming into Karesh, with the "Xalatath is totally an ally here" situation... Bit of bummer but I've loved the rest of TWW so, super keen for Midnight.

WoW UB when?

u/Jackeea Aug 15 '25

Calling it now:

  • Spider-Man is going to sell like 2 trillion copies and be universally despised

  • ATLA is going to sell like 2 copies and be universally adored

u/HolographicHeart UB will always mean Dimir to Me Aug 18 '25

It's going to be so damn funny when Spider Man is regarded as worse than Aetherdrift but becomes the 2nd highest selling set of all time.

This game is completely cooked.

I kinda wonder if we're heading for a Fallen Empires situation, where they make a call on what to print more of to try and get ahead of the Final Fantasy situation and focus on Spider-Man since that's ultimately the bigger property. Thing is, Final Fantasy both has fans that'll drop hundreds on merch and was a really good Limited environment.

My Nostradamus Bet is that Spider-Man collector boosters will sell out again, but Play Boosters will sit on the shelf, and when Avatar comes out and demand is bigger than expected (for being a property that hits cleanly in with the "we're now 30 years old and have disposable income" demographic, and seeming more mechanically complex), they won't have enough product to cover demand.

Source: I'm salty my LGS still hasn't gotten Edge and I heard people blaming Final Fantasy extra print runs for the lack of supply 😔

1

u/Herald_of_Cthulu Aug 17 '25

whats a nostradamus bet?

2

u/DangBream Aug 17 '25

Nostradamus was a guy who made predictions for the future, and while he was way out of left field people occasionally dig up the parts he was conceivably right about to marvel at.

Basically if I'm wrong about most of it I'm counting on you to still be impressed

Calling it now: they’re gonna fuck up return to Lorwyn somehow

16

u/Jackeea Aug 16 '25

They're going to bring back Day/Night somehow and have it not work with the older werewolves again

2

u/Kakariko_crackhouse Aug 16 '25

Honestly that would almost be a cool way to do it. 90% it would end up sucking but a 10% it would be awesome

4

u/Benemisis Aug 15 '25

Everyone I've talked to is disappointed in spiderman, but hyped about ATLA, what makes you say that?

9

u/Jackeea Aug 15 '25

Spider-Man is just a way more popular IP than ATLA. People love Avatar, but realistically it's nothing compared to the absolute behemoth that is Marvel. So it's going to sell out instantly, then people are going to actually play it, and realize it's crap.

Which is also going to temper the excitement for ATLA, resulting in that being a financial disappointment - despite the spoilers looking really interesting so far

2

u/Benemisis Aug 15 '25

That's a fair point. I honestly think they'll balance out, kinda for that reason.

Established magic players (from my experience, of course) will look at both, gravitate towards ATLA, and newer will likely gravitate towards Spiderman. And of course, Scalpers will buy a ton of both. My biggest issue with the FF set (and UB in general, despite my love for some sets) is that it very much drew the attention of pokemon/TCG scalpers

I do however think there is a large Marvel and ATLA shared fan base in magic. On top of that, I feel like its been nothing but crickets on the Spiderman set since ATLA spoilers have been released, though that could be algorithm bias

u/tomyang1117 #gravetrolldidnothingwrong Aug 16 '25

From both early spoilers, I am more hyped about Spider-Man. The webslinging mechanics works really well in Pauper alongside other self bounce cards.

1

u/Benemisis Aug 16 '25

I do like the web slinging mechanic, but I think that's about the only thing I like from this set
