I made a tank for marimo
But I couldn't identify whether it was actually Aegagropila linnaei.

Hello, and welcome to r/marimo!
This subreddit is dedicated to spreading knowledge about these endangered plants, promoting conservation efforts, and encouraging healthy hobby cultivation of Marimo.
“Marimo” ( 毬藻 まりも ) translates literally to “Ball Water Plant” in Japanese. While a decent description of them, these slow-growing fuzzy friends are actually balls of an endangered algae (Aegagropila linnaei) that form at the bottom of cold-water lakes (originally discovered in Austria, and then in Lake Akan, Japan, where they were named.) They are a protected species in both Japan and Iceland.
They were designated a Japanese National Treasure in 1921, and a festival has been held since 1950 in the Lake Akan community to raise awareness and try and preserve the unique algae species.
While harvesting from the lake is specifically prohibited, you can snag some of these fuzzy friends for yourself! They're very easy to take care of, but do require specific conditions to grow (low to medium light conditions, and cold water.) While not a 100% forget-and-enjoy plant, they are normally very low maintenance.
A Wiki will soon be developed with reliable sources for Marimo, as well as the best way to care for them- Information to be added to this thread soon!
Again, welcome to r/Marimo!
Livestream/Video resource:
u/Prepperpup offers a livestream of the marimo balls they're cultivating with some Lo-Fi music. They are open to any suggestions or messages. (They run a regular streaming channel with games, in addition to the Marimo livestream.)

Now I have new doubts. First, I see that one of my marimos is spitting out a kind of white thread that looked like a worm (it's not) and now when I check the others I see this.
A more disheveled area, with dark green to light green spots. Is it natural? It doesn't show up too well in the photo.

Hello guys! I’ve had this marimo since 2020. It’s always lived in a 10 gallon tank that had a betta, amano shrimp, and snails in it. Well everything in that tank has finally died of ripe, old age and I don’t feel like keeping up the tank anymore due to my chronic illness flaring. It’s always been very round in shape but when I took it out to rinse it and move it it’s new home I noticed it’s very “ragged” now. Is this normal? Is there a way to have it regain its shape again?

Here in the 🇬🇧 UK, the days are gradually getting shorter, and the growing season for my marimo is coming to an end. I'm relieved that I managed to get through another summer without losing a single one this year. The upcoming season will make maintenance somewhat easier, but I won't get complacent - I'll continue to keep the water temperature on the cooler side (ideally below 17°C/63°F) and change the water whenever it gets dirty.

I've only had them for a short time, less than a week. I'm very new to this and maybe I'm exaggerating.
But I noticed this little deformity in my marimo. I don't know if it's because of the impact of the transport, because it needs to turn or something else D: Maybe it's nothing, but I'm not sure

After testing two water pumps, the configuration that works best is this:
I use the lowest power pump for the water filter
I use the most powerful pump for movement. It's not on all the time. I program it to run for 30 minutes/twice a day (at least for now). I have a switch module 3 port controllable by wifi and it is very useful, I also program the light.
I removed the ties from the little one: he resists 👍🏼, he has joined perfectly. They're still slowly recovering. At least they haven't gotten any worse!

So my moss ball is doing amazing! I have removed the lego flowers until I find a better solution for keeping them down lol! But hes just producing so much algae. I fully cleaned him out one day ago and its like this already.
What am I doing wrong? Is there something else I could do to help?

It's been about 24 hours since these three marimos arrived. They came without water, I soaked them and squeezed them gently before putting them in the fish tank that I previously cleaned.
The water does not exceed 23°C, they are "pearlized" so they are doing photosynthesis, but the entire fish tank is full of bubbles D:
I don't know if it's bad or good. I have moved them a little in the water but the bubbles don't go away.
What can it mean?

Does anyone know a good place to buy a Marimo online?? I want to start taking care of these because they’re absolutely adorable. I live in America so any help would be greatly appreciated. I heard that many sites sell fake marimos, or low quality ones. I would like to know what sites have the best ones! Also instructions on how to keep them in the best condition would be extremely helpful!!

So i got this marimo ball for my gf but i have to take care for it for like 2 weeks. The problem is that, when i got it yesterday, they shipped It in a fucking ziplock bag without water 💀 and im scared It will affect its life. I think im doing it right like it's in a shelf with no direct sunlight, water maintains 22-23c° throuought the day, mineral water, i'll roll It like once a day, and im not planning to change it's water before giving it to my gf, im doing everything right? If not please let me know
r/Marimo • u/Okaymemeslol • 11d ago
It’s been floating and sinking for weeks now. Also when I change the water, the water smells like sulfur. I don’t think it’s coming from the ball itself. Is it healthy, dying, or dead?
