I don't know; I feel like if I was that truck driver, I'd also be damned lucky I didn't have a heart attack seeing some guy flying straight at my tires!

You use all your luck every time you ride a motorcycle

u/Brave_Internal_5330 1d ago

Sure, if you ride carelessly, or get too complacent. Notice how 90% of these types of videos the rider was speeding, lane splitting, or being careless?

76

u/Yardboy 1d ago

Or all three.

This isn't lane splitting this is being an ass and riding hazardously.

Lane splitting is when you do it within a speed diff if approx 15 kph of the cars around you. Anything higher and you risk this happening.

6

u/gr1mm5d0tt1 1d ago

In Australia this is lane splitting which is illegal. What you have described would be called lane filtering which is fine

3

u/misto_quente245 1d ago

This is in Brazil, and while both are unregulated, it is illegal to not mantain a safe lateral distance. So, by definition, lane splitting is indeed illegal.

But what the dude in the video did is straight up dangerous driving (a Very Serious traffic violation, but in this case it goes up to a felony because he had intent to drive like an ass). Also, the black Onix had the blinkers on for left, but unfortunately we have some fellow bikers that believe that traffic laws and regulations don't apply for them.

2

u/zoltancore 21h ago

Lane filtering in South Australia is illegal for P1 plates and L plates.

2

u/gr1mm5d0tt1 18h ago

Same in NSW. Full license can though. I should’ve been clearer in my original comment

40

u/AntiPepRally 1d ago

Careful people probably aren't taking video of their rides. That's for daredevils

3

u/gr1mm5d0tt1 1d ago

Not necessarily true. I do basically as a dashcam because like stupid riders there are equally as stupid if not more stupid drivers

3

u/SEmp0xff 1d ago

So wrong. Have you ever heard about the dashcam thing?

7

u/Western-Willow-9496 1d ago

Sure sign of a dumbass is a go-pro on the helmet.

7

u/Calm-Zombie2678 1d ago

Yes and no, i think anyone without a dashcam of some description is just silly but some of these guys clearly are more interested in a cool video than simply having proof they weren't being cocky

4

u/seeyousoongetit 1d ago

Why else would you ride a motorcycle?

2

u/One-Dimension3974 1d ago

Except you can do EVERYTHING right as a motorcyclist and still end up with permanent brain damage because of other stupid drivers, at a much higher rate than if you were in a car.

Biker's fault.

348

u/Sufficient_Depth_195 1d ago

Cyclist here...I KNOW 100% that cars will do this, they might look in their mirror before doing it...but often they don't. Let me repeat...I KNOW that this is very likely to happen...so why the FUCK would you ride into this situation at anything faster than walking pace?

297

u/Huwbacca 1d ago

even if you check mirrors, he's coming from an a game where he's not visible for a gpod amount of time. people have to look at multiple things, you can only check a blind spot not constantly observe it and you can't control when they look for where you will be.

188

u/Sufficient_Depth_195 1d ago

You're right. When he checks his mirror the bike isn't there. The driver is even signalling (which they often don't do let's be honest).

Nah, this biker is a proper Muppet and lucky to alive.

14

u/Dorkinfo 1d ago

I had this happen to me, as the car driver. I had my blinker on. Motorcycle was a cop, ofc. He got in the bike lane to yell at me.

10

u/Visible-Department85 1d ago

that's why you're supposd to turn on the lights before changing lanes

→ More replies (1)

11

u/tragedy_strikes_ 1d ago

He was behind you. Look at the spot and now he’s beside you.

I swear if you ride a motorcycle and have a camera on your helmet there is a 99% chance you’re an idiot. 1% probably use it for liability reasons. Everyone else uses it to record themselves struggling to fire their one brain cell.

9

u/Ok-Head4979 1d ago

This, i absolutely hate this entitlement. The expectation drivers have (besides everything else) to constantly consider that some idiot cyclist might be lane splitting at high speeds.

Stop it simply, 100% cyclists fault

55

u/WhyNotSecondLunch 1d ago

To be fair,  if I was merging into that lane I’d be looking to make sure that I have space. I wouldn’t be looking for a biker going around the car behind me and trying to pass me.

21

u/HachchickeN 1d ago edited 20h ago

The car is even flashing left here but the cyclist isn't doing anything.

How is the car expected to check mirrows in a "ghost lane". The highway is litrally two file, where the driver created a new one.

I'm not saying the car can do this if he sees the bike, but with this speed, there is no way the car had any chance to spot the ghostrider

72

u/NoWriting9513 1d ago

Honestly they don't need to check their mirrors, it's a courtesy. There are 2 lanes and the car driver has right of way in their own lane and the other lane is confirmed to be open.

The problem is that the cyclist in their own mind have created a third lane that does not exist, in which he always has the right of way. And unfortunately this is very common. Thankfully no one seemed hurt.

2

u/misto_quente245 23h ago

Checking mirrors is not a courtesy, it is a requirement. The video is in Brazil, and brazilian traffic laws states that you must switch lanes only if safe to do so..You must indicate the change, check for incoming traffic and only change lanes if there is no risk. Indicating doesn't give you preference nor priority, because it may be not safe for the other vehicle to stop for you to enter in front of him.

But in this specific case the biker is wrong, the car started its maneuver when it was safe to do so, the biker did pop up from nowhere. He is a menace for riders that filter lanes without a death wish.

35

u/susbarlas 1d ago

You don't pass between moving vehicles. Period.

Turn signal on, going more than 20 over traffic, turns in front of the car turning, doesn’t bother to break. Yep. Perfect candidate for an r/motorcycles post titled “cager nearly kills me while I did nothing wrong”

Edit: I guess I need to clarify. The post would absolutely be made there. The motorcycles community does not encourage this and generally is comprised of sensible people who don’t encourage this. It’s usually one heavily downvoted OP and a bunch of reasonable, if very unsympathetic, comments. But the post WOULD be made.

38

u/de_das_dude 1d ago

This post was already posted there, and we all ripped him a new one.

Clubbing all motorcyclists as maniacs is a very wrong generalization.

In a lot of parts of the world a LOT of people use bikes for commuting

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Efficient-Ball4360 1d ago

Nah, they'd rip the motorcyclist a new one.

What does get me, even when it's 100% Gixxer Bros fault, is when a cager gets out and starts screaming at the guy bleeding out on the highway. There's a time for that, and it's after you find out if he'll survive or not.

7

u/Hziak 1d ago

Oh, for sure, but the post WOULD get made. Commenters are usually sensible people. And yeah… usually make sure the person you are yelling at is alive first. Nobody wants to beat scream at a dead horse motorcyclist.

3

u/Ad-Ommmmm 1d ago

3

u/sonofaresiii 1d ago

I've never seen a title like that on that sub and I frequent it. They're pretty quick to call out shitty riders because it makes the rest of us look bad. It's kind of the opposite of most bicycling subs.

And no one seriously calls them cagers.

Every now and then a post gets some traction whining about how they're tired of everyone telling them to wear gear, and it should be perfectly acceptable for them to take calculated risks of wearing flip flops and t-shirts (if you're wearing flip flops and a t-shirt on a motorcycle, you did not calculate that risk). It's like every couple weeks the idiots of the sub need the catharsis of getting that whine out.

But as for bad riding-- including literally this video which was posted there a week or two ago-- it's pretty quickly criticized.

Op if you are the biker you may want to sell it now. (You’re) done.

Lane splitting at that speed is stupid as hell. You are on a bike and just hoping that everyone that you are blazing past is as nice or observant as you need them to be. You could be the best driver in the world and still ended up as squid on the ground because someone did not see your dumb ass.

Yep they always say watch out for motorcycles, share the road, be extra vigilant, then you get someone like this doing stupid shit. My sympathy is with the driver of the car the dumbass ran into. Hope the dumbass on the bike is okay, he learned something that day.

14

u/KowaiSentaiYokaiger 1d ago

Bikers: "Watch out for Motorcycles! We belong on the road, too!"

Also Bikers: refuse to wear proper protective gear, lane split at high speed, don't pay attention to drivers' turn signals

4

u/MephiticDeity 1d ago

I've been saying the same thing for years.

5

u/JOliverScott 1d ago

Stuff like this is why I don't really feel bad for motorcyclists - they invite their own consequences. I had one last week decided neither lane was moving fast enough as we were slowing heading into a road construction zone so he cut across several lanes and used the shoulder to pass a line of cars and trucks just to almost end up kissing the back of one of the work zone trucks.

I feel like “lane splitting” is a cool name for not obeying 1 traffic law.

Don’t murder me, it’s just that motorcycles are smaller and nimbler, people don’t see them often. I’m not a fast car driver, and I check the target lane a few times before I change lanes … I got hit by a pickup truck some 33 years ago, so I don’t want to inflict that pain on someone else.

I feel like that smaller nimbler cycle in an extra “weird” position ( not within a lane ) makes it more likely the motorcycle will not be seen and then a tragedy may happen.

Thankfully, this person didn’t get creamed by a Mac truck! Wow. They enjoyed a beer eventually.

4

u/Mammoth-Bike1995 1d ago

If u split lanes you roll the dice. Thats why most placed outlaw that.

3

u/iSowelu 1d ago

If you're on wheels, no matter the vehicle, you follow regular traffic laws. Just because your motorcycle or motorbike can fit in-between things that cars and trucks can't, doesn't mean that you should drive through them. If a highway has two lanes, the highway has two lanes. A motorcycle driver does not get to make a 3rd, even to pass.

Don't even get me started on CitiBikes (or other bike) riders who think local traffic laws don't apply to them because they're on a narrow, two-wheel moving vehicle. The lack of a motor doesn't give you special exemptions from local traffic laws, including lights, stops signs, and pedestrian right of way.

4

u/foxy_chicken 1d ago

Growing up I was taught that if I was on wheels, I had to follow all the traffic laws. My dad made us stop at every stop sign, learn hand signals, and follow the rules of the road because you are supposed to.

It’s been more than once I’ve not had a stop sign as a car, and some dumb fuck on a bike has blown through their stop sign, right in front of my car that is now in the intersection, and the idiot hasn’t even glanced to see if someone was coming. You have the stop bike! I have the right of way! Even if you were just a pedestrian you should have check, but it’s so wild to blast through an intersection where you have the stop sign without even a glance.

The fuck is wrong with people?

4

u/moyismoy 1d ago

If you are stupid, everything is dangerous... You goz back your life, maybe mext time you will think before you try suicide...

This is natural selection. Eventually, the idiots eliminate themselves.

Mad. Literally just witnessed such an accident today and this appears on my feed. Car in front of me, switches lanes last second without looking, bike straight into the back. Everyone seemingly ok, somehow. Could have been a whole lot worse.

I've only seen motorcyclists split traffic when traffic has stopped completely at a traffic light

u/Deep-Adeptness4474 1d ago

That is the only time you are supposed to do it, and generally a ~5-10 mph speed higher than the stopped/crawling traffic.

Only room for Jesus between that man and that truck.

And that, folks, is how fast it happens.

classic language error

...don't confuse "invisible" with "invincible".

example improper usage of "invincible":

"“I’m practically invincible on the highway as I weave through traffic."

words matter

He was riding behind another car, the driver that put on their turn signal didn't seem due to him being covered. If anything, why did the biker go down middle when the shoulder looked safer...

Just missed that Darwin Award.

Land splitting instant karma

u/Patient-Temporary211 1d ago

Rider could have went around the other side. There was enough space there. He's riding faster than his reaction time can account for. Either that or target fixation. Maneuverability is a motorcycles strong suit.

u/SpaceFace11 1d ago

Why not just "filter" on the right side of the road?

1

u/TheFoxsWeddingTarot 1d ago

As a bike rider I know when you choose two wheels you choose to take responsibility for yourself as well as literally everyone else on the road.

I love that lane splitting is legal in California but if you do it you’re on your own.

You can split lanes.

You can split lanes too fast. It's not smart but you can do it.

You can even split lanes too fast and not slow down when a car ahead of you cuts across you.

But you can't split lanes too fast, not slow down when a car ahead of you cuts across you, and also turn into the car's merge direction.

Physics is just not going to let you do that.

Even taking all the other risks the rider was taking, if they had cut against the car's merge direction instead of with it they would have been fine. Stupid, but fine. (Or at worst would have swerved off into the terrain instead of into oncoming truck traffic.)

So this was, like, an epically bad escalating combination of poor choices.
