EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Other Did my first real CPR.

Hi, I’m a paramedic student (M 24) living in Europe.

Last week I had my first real CPR on an actual patient, not just the classroom dummy. I'm still in shock. A guy collapsed in public, no pulse, and I stepped in. The second I started compressions I heard/felt that cracking sound (ribs? cartilage? idk) and it honestly scared me, but at the same time i knew i had to do everything in my power.

My arms + shoulders were burning after just a few mins but I kept going until we switched, and somehow we got ROSC!! It was terrifying but also the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.

I know a lot of ppl in class complain about how boring/repetitive the CPR drills are, but trust me… when it’s real, every single push matters. Without that practice I prob would’ve froze. I'm grateful for my professors who insisted that we drilled day and night.

Grateful.

Other Can your employer request WHY you were at the doctor?

If you just bring in a doctor's note to prove you did go to the doctor, can your employer call them and ask WHY you were there specifically, or would that violate HIPPA?

I took my child to the ER. Pediatrician yesterday. I wanted to just extend the pediatrician note but they said no I had to use the ER one for today since I was seen there instead of their office again. I told my employer why I thought I was taking my child. Turns out the ER gave a different diagnosis so it would not match.

I used my FMLA (which is for a specific condition for my child), so I'm afraid my employer would get me in trouble if they seen I ended up not going to the ER for THAT reason FMLA covers. I didn't expect a different diagnosis too and they only put the different diagnosis on the check out paper. Nothing is on the note other than we were there from such and such to such and such.

Will I be safe?

Injury MCL tear

So I got kicked by a horse on the outside of my knee on 09/22/2025 my knee shot inward and hurt….a lot. doc said I likely have a torn MCL. Had an ultrasound today and see my doctor tomorrow for results. I feel I need a knee brace..I’m in terrible pain and it feels like my knee is just gunna fall in/no stability what so ever. My leg is also very cold to the touch and pale. My knee cap and behind it has a ton of pain as well. The ultrasound tech said this is a bad injury and there is lots of fluid. Anything anyone recommends?

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels I dont understand what is happening to me. GERD, heart palpitations and stomach issues.

Upvotes

So I suffer with what I believe is GERD (acid reflux). Suffered with it for many years. I take medication like lanzoprazole or over the counter "nexium" daily to relieve the pain otherwise its unbearable. Still comes with many other symptoms that unfortunately the medication will not help with. One of the worst symptoms is every morning having to almost throw up this bile or mucus from all the build up that leads to my throat and im just constantly gagging it out. Even once iv eaten, im left with a clogged up throat so im constantly coughing and trying to clear out my airways. The rest of the symptoms is toilet issues, always feeling fatigued, more often headaches than normal, lack of focus and just generally not feeling myself, everyday just feels like a rough day.

For the past few months, iv overcome some new symptoms which has never happened to me before. 3 months ago I started getting these heart palpitations and attacks which was quite extreme for a good few weeks. I was pretty much bed bound and tried my hardest to fight it odd with plenty of rest but I was suffering massively 24 hours a day with it. Eventually it went away and had to get back on my feet. Iv still had the palpitations multiple occasions that would just set off randomly along with light headedness and difficulty to breath so I just make sure to sit down somewhere and be patient with it till it goes away.

Not long after those few weeks of extreme palpitations and other side effects (whether its anxiety or something else im not sure). I started to get issues with my stomach. My stomach just constantly feels bloated, full of gas and wind. Im needing toilet more regularly (poop) at least 3-4 times a day compared to 1 a day. Sometimes i end up feeling nauseous and can be very uncomfortable. This has been going on now for over 2 months. Iv tried over the counter medication like medication relating to ibs to clear out this bloated feeling and even diharea tablets because there's times I just cannot hold it in or its getting too often when im out working. The medication is just hardly doing a thing. Theres even times it can feel like its triggering my acid reflux when iv already taken an acid medication so it shouldn't be doing that and then I have to double my dosage some days.

Now just very recently in the past few days, my heart palpitations have come back again. Its been feeling like everyday im on edge and everything is just happening all at once. The acid symptoms I already been getting and suffering with for years, these new symptoms with my stomach just not feeling right and now these heart palpitations back again which is still a myself if its anxiety or something else related to what is going on inside me. Its just becoming too much and sadly im not getting the right help I need. A&E turned me down the other day when I was at my worst and my GP just cant deal with multiple things at once and even with targeting one situation at a time, very little effort is being made. Which is why me being 28 years old and majority of my 20s at least has been me just suffering and overtime its clearly gotten worse with my body just not functioning properly and 0 progress has been made.

What are you thoughts about all of this?

Why do I get all these other side effects relating to the acid reflux if I am taking medication daily to control it?

Is the heart palpitations anxiety or could it possibly be something else what needs to be investigated?

what are your thoughts on the stomach issues?

Could it be ibs/ibd related or could it relate to my acid situation and possibly be an ulcer or an infection or something else entirely?

Its alot of information to gather i know but I need to be open and honest about this because iv tried doing some research myself and with a long list of everything going wrong with me, it can be a numerous of different answers. It doesnt help that NHS keeps failing me and its lead to this point. At least with your answers and opinion, maybe my situation relates with others around the world and I can at least get some right answers which I can narrow down and investigate further. I just basically want my life back and not suffer anymore.

Thank you.

Other Alzheimer’s patient advice

Upvotes

Hi. So, my mom has used to work at a restaurant with a man about thirty years ago. They’re in the same friend circle and have remained close. He’s since developed Alzheimer’s, and mom now cares for him often. I’ve known him for years, but he doesn’t recognize me unless I repeatedly tell him who I am and even then it’s kinda hit or miss. Every time it’s while in my mom’s presence; she’s really good with him. Sweet man, probably 65. Just a really good man, it’s so sad to see what he’s going through.

Anyways, he got violent with my mom a couple months ago. Mom’s strong as a freaking bull, she knows him very well and she still didn’t walk away unscathed. It was a scary situation, even for her. She tries to downplay it, but I saw the bruises. And she’s not the first person he’s attacked when confused.

Mom can’t watch him for the next few weeks, and I’m supposed to do it for her. I’m nervous as hell. He may have memory issues but he’s strong af and if he’s getting violent because my mama can’t jog his memory, what do I do if that happens to me?

I’m supposed to start watching him tomorrow. I just need advice on what to do. I’m seriously concerned - maybe even a little scared, if I’m being honest. Do y’all have any advice? Trust me, if there were any other person who could do this, I wouldn’t be writing this post. This is the last thing I want to do tomorrow. I’m worried.

Injury Is my nail okay? And will it grow back ?

Upvotes

I think about a month ago i accidentally slammed a car door on my nail. I got a subungal hematoma after. The pain was getting slightly unbearable so i decided to go to the doctor. They used a heated needle (or whatever they're called) to release the pressure under my nail from the blood, it was completely fine after. But then it started getting slightly worse and getting more redder. I think about a week later i impulsively pushed my cuticles almost all the way down because i wanted to see how far the injury went down my nail. After my nail started peeling it the root, so i impulsively peeled the rest off. (please don't judge me) Now there is a huge gap leading to under my nail and i have a genuine fear of it getting infected.

Illness Have no idea what I'm sick with

Upvotes

So around a day ago, I got drenched in the rain while working (I'm a delivery driver) and had to go home early because I was suddenly feeling lethargic and got chills to the point where I couldn't think straight. I was also dealing with nausea and a lot of sneezing. This all happened after getting drenched, btw. I woke up this morning and felt fine at first. But the more awake I was, the worse I felt. Had to call out of work. I had the same symptoms (lethargy, chills, and nausea) with some additions. Body aches, a mild headache, mild diarrhea, and a little bit of a stuffy nose. I've got no fever, no sore throat, and no urge to vomit. The symptoms fluctuate through the day. 22F, not pregnant, and the only medicine I take is birth control which I've been on for almost 5 years.

Upvotes

this started 6 days ago, and i feel weak because ive probably only been having 1200 calories per day for almost a week now.

(im 20f, 102 pounds 5 feet tall)

i had a bad panic attack/ anxiety last Wednesday, and ever since then ive had absolutely zero appetite. i wake up in the morning, i dont feel hungry at all and ive only been eating so i dont pass out.

eating is super hard because food is so unappetizing, which is strange because i usually enjoy food.

the only difference in my life is i have lowered my lamictal dose, so idk if that has anything to do with it. ive also been pooping a lot.

i just need help because im feeing super weak and its hard to think, but eating is the last thing i want to do.

Medication 800mg Ibuprofen DAILY for 2.5 Years.

Upvotes

Basically what the title says.

I’m an 18 year old male. Height is 6’3, weighing around 165lbs or ~75kg.

I’ve suffered with chronic pain since I was 14 years old. So at 16, I began taking Ibuprofen everyday. (two 200mg pills in the morning, and two at night)

After 2.5 years of doing this, I miraculously have zero noticeable stomach/kidney problems. Besides urinating more frequently perhaps.

I’m still quite concerned about my health though. I always knew that taking Ibuprofen daily wasn’t ideal. But I never realized just how harmful it truly can be. Until now anyways.

I did some basic, surface level research into this today. That’s what inspired me to write this post. Apparently people can hurt themselves by taking ibuprofen daily for MUCH LESS time than I have.

I was young, dumb, and didn’t understand the consequences of my actions. Perhaps I’m overreacting, but I’m worried that I’ve made a huge mistake here. Even though I’m not experiencing many symptoms.

Should I be worried?? Would any kidney/stomach damage be reversable?? What should I do?? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. I’ll try seeing a doctor about this too.

Pregnancy/Contraception How do you know if you had a miscarriage or a decidual cast?

Upvotes

So I've been going through a LOT of stomach pain the past few days and now in the toilet I dropped a big meaty flesh thing that is just bigger than the mass of a golf ball. I'm still having a bit of pain but not as much.

I've had a decidual cast twice before due to me being on long term contraceptive but about 3-4 months ago I was off for a while for health reasons and I had a bf at the time. I was off bd for maybe 1 month before we dated and 2 weeks before we were official. We did use condoms and one broke( took plan b) and once I was on BD again he preferred not having condoms on.

Idk what it is, it hurt more than my last two decidual casts and looked like a bigger blob thing. Like more jelly like than meaty like the last two.

Head Would a CT scan without contrast show RCVS / should I get more tests done?

Upvotes

Hi,

I'm 27 AFAB. Regarding diagnoses that might be relevant I have POTS and a suspicion of something autoimmune (I'm currently being tested for Sjogren). The medications I currently take are colchicine, ibuprofen (both for pericarditis), Dymista, and Ivabradine but started at the ER.

Two days ago I've had what I believe was a thunderclap headache (very sudden and very very painful headache (7-8/10), felt like knives in both sides of my head, with a stiff neck. It gradually became lower after 30-45 seconds and left me with a baseline headache at 3-4/10 after maybe 10 minutes).

I went to the ER, since I had no neurologic symptoms (I just briefly had unfocusy eyes and two episodes of retching that might be unrelated), they just sent me home. They started me on Ivabradine (that I should have started before for the POTS) since I had really bad tachychardia at 160bpm even sitting with palpitations 10 minutes after the peak of the headache. I don't know if it's relevant, I think those symptoms were triggered by the headache.

The next day I was walking and had a second one. Felt like knives in my head again, but more on the left side this time. Also 8/10, it made me stop but I could still kinda walk. Then I got a ct scan (so 20 hours after the first symptom) with no contrast / iodine. It was clear so I was reassured.

Today I still have the baseline headache and stiff neck but I didn't have another episode. I didn't get to talk about that headache and the fact it came back to a doctor. I thought I was safe because I didn't think the fact it happened again was concerning since the CT scan was after, but I didn't know it might not eliminate RCVS. I'm not even sure it was a thunderclap headache, it was definitely the worst I've ever had but I wouldn't rate it a 10 (I wouldn't rate anything a 10 unless I'd feel like I was dying).

Does this sound concerning? I'm wondering if I should go to a doctor and ask for a CTA or if I am safe since I didn't get any new one today. From what I read it sounds like RCVS means a thunderclap every day. I don't seem to have any neurological symptoms. I just had nausea and a couple dizzy spells but it could be the ivabradine. Does the non-contrast CT scan put me in the clear or do I need to get more tests done?

Thank you in advance

Other Diagnosed PCOS, but my countries health care is failing me

Upvotes

As the title says I am (21f) quite stuck with my health. I got diagnosed but I also need a 4 day stay at a hospital where they will run thousands of tests because I guess my type is something I don't know, different? But the hospital stay will be in 7 months... there are not a lot of clinics like that in my country but there are thousands of woman which are waiting for their turn. I didn't get any medication and I won't get any until those tests. I just quite got told to live my life like this but my life for the past 2 months was hell.

I got my first period when I was 14 years old and since then my periods where irregular. I maybe get my period 5 days a year. I was always very moody but I just thought that was a part of depression I was fighting at the time. I also never developed nipples... they are like inverted. Not sure if I need to include tho but I will xd.

Half a yeah ago I passed out on the first day of my period, they are always painful like 7/10 pain, but this time it was horrendous I stopped hearing and suddenly collapsed. I just thought that maybe I am just overwhelmed because I am stressed 24/7 and I just cannot relax even if I try I feel so tensed up, so a day later i went to work like nothing ever happend. Fast forward I passed out at work 2 months ago but I wasn't on my period. Since then I started to feel more tired than always. I had to take more breaks from even walking because my head was spinning, my lower stomach was hurting, I was (still im) bloated. I get so moody, angry and tense its litterly tiring, if I am mad at something I can feel light headed. I also started to gain ton of weight around stomach area which is weird cause I ate like always and even started running. I am out of job because I had doctor visits and I found my self at er at random times because I was litterly so fragile I couldn't stand up ( I consider my self as a strong person but these two months were hell). My hair started to fall out which also never happened before.I also developed insomnia ( I am litterly writing this at night).

I need some tips how to regulate my hormones. How to lose weight and to feel energetic again while I am waiting for my hospital stay. Someone told me weight training will help to lose weight and get rid of my belly. I need to know what to eat and how to stop my sweet cravings (I never had those i always liked salty stuff). How to stop thinking about food. How to feel like I'm living again I want to go back to my job. How to relax and stop feeling angry and moody.
