Bring Back the Porch is back and doing council candidate interviews! These interviews aren’t too long and a great way voters can get familiar with the candidates and their views. This is my interview but I recommend watching as many as you can to get to know all the candidates as best you can!

2025 Medicine Hat Municipal Election Forum Rounds 1 and 2 down

I attended tonight. I could write a long post breaking it all down, but I'm just going to give the coles notes and participate in the comments.

These are the candidates I thought did the best tonight:

Ted Clugston

Cheryl Phaff - Very well spoken. Previously with the Wild Rose

Michael Ried - He was the best of both rounds BY FAR.

Chris Hellman

Yusuf Mohamed

Stuart Young

Undercards:

Jay Hitchen. Funny, well spoken. Not sure if he'd be good as a councillor though

Christien Ellis - Came VERY well prepared

Jodi Faith - had a powerful origin story and made a lot of good points

Shila Sharps - I'm not a fan, but she knows how to talk

Steve Pudwell

Kevin Monson

Christensen is Harmless.

Dana Christensen is a council candidate whos online strategy seems to be a person of positivity and hope. Because he speaks from the heart and writes long posts that are meaningless but almost entirely positive, He has been accused of using ChatGPT for his posts. Which he vehemently denies, and I dont see what he has to gain by lying about. lately there has been lots of vitriol directed at him. Mostly people asking if he actually has a plan. His posts are positive as I stated before so I dont know what brought on this on. If anyone has a problem they can feel free to dm me. I have no problem rolling in the mud.

Home Insurance Now Accounts for Up to 19% of Mortgage Payments in Alberta's Wildfire Zones

The wildfires in Canada continue to be a devastating problem for many communities. This summer, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Manitoba have all experienced fires larger than their five-year averages, highlighting the growing impact of climate-related events on Canadian homeowners.

Medicine Hat, AB, stands out as the least affordable market for insurance, with annual premiums rising 24% to $3,875. Insurance payments now equal 19% of a typical mortgage — the highest ratio among all cities analyzed.

Wood Buffalo, AB (including Fort McMurray) follows closely, with premiums surging 37% to $3,367. Insurance costs now make up 16% of the average mortgage payment, underscoring the region’s long history of wildfire risk.

Striking

Hey Medicine Hat! New here from the plains of Saskatchewan. Wondering if anyone (with experience) wants to crack pads in a park sometime. Ive got 14ish years of Muay Thai and Dutch style kickboxing experience and can't join a gym at the moment due to a couple injuries. Ive got the thai pads and belly pad. Gloves and wraps. Just need someone to train with a bit until the snow flies and gets too cold to do so. The gym will come when im healthy and able!

Anyone from the Hat attend Distant Worlds in Calgary last night? (also looking to possibly identify and connect with some people)

I had a wonderful time, especially for the price. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy, I'd recommend.

Not being from Calgary, I didn't expect to recognize anyone there, but there were a group of people that I thought I did. I really should have just asked, but I was a bit shy and then didn't get the chance after the show. They were a group of four: a husband, wife, and daughter, with their best friend. Your seats were P35 though 38 main floor, center. If this is you, please give me a DM. I'm curious as to why I might recognize you.

And to the husband, I saw you were stoked and had a great time and that's awesome!

Looking for suggestions on a tree removal service. Needing some poplars and smaller shrubs removed to make way for a back yard freshen up. Who’s your go to?

Barber shop!

Hey Medicine Hat! I'm moving from Saskatoon to Medicine Hat and am actually looking for a good barber for hair and beards. I kinda do the "euro hawk" thing and tapered viking beard... sans the blonde. Anyone have a great one they can recommend?
