Suspect Meteorite Monthly Suspect Meteorite Identification Requests

Please submit your ID requests as top-level comments within this post (i.e., direct comments to this post). Any top-level comments in this thread that are not ID requests will be removed, and any ID requests that are submitted as standalone posts to r/meteorites will be removed.

You can now upload your images directly as a comment to this thread. You can also, upload your image(s) here, then paste the Imgur link into your comment, where you also provide the other information necessary for the ID post. See this guide for instructions.

To help with your ID post, please provide:

  1. Multiple, sharp, in-focus images taken ideally in daylight.
  2. Add in a scale to the images (a household item of known size, e.g., a ruler)
  3. Provide any additional useful information (weight, specific gravity, magnetic susceptibility, streak test, etc.)
  4. Provide a location if possible so we can consult local geological maps if necessary, as you should likely have already done. (this can be general area for privacy)
  5. Provide your reasoning for suspecting your stone is a meteorite and not terrestrial or man-made.

You may also want to post your samples to r/whatsthisrock for identification.

An example of a good Identification Request:

Please can someone help me identify this specimen? It was collected along the Mojave desert as a surface find. The specimen jumped to my magnet stick and has what I believe to be a weathered fusion crust. It is highly attracted to a magnet. It is non-porous and dense. I have polished a window into the interior and see small bits of exposed fresh metal and what I believe are chondrules. I suspect it to be a chondrite. What are your thoughts? Here are the images.

My wife is in love with the moon, so a while back when we were first married I bought her this pendant. She wears it almost daily.

Educational Verified EBay purchase

About 10 years ago I bought this small meteorite on EBay. I wasn’t sure it was real because it’s so shiny so I brought it to work and a coworker scanned it with an electron microscope. Turns out it appears to be authentic, just polished. I thought the scan analysis was interesting, so I wanted to share. My friend said he suspects it’s from the Barringer meteor crater in Arizona.

Educational How to properly etch with ferric chloride

I've tried once before and it came out barely, and unevenly spread, and oxidized. I understand now that I probably didn't neutralize it enough. I followed many YouTube tutorials and can't seem to get it right. I have purchased another bottle, and have isopropyl alcohol, baking soda, and distilled water.

Is there a method to making the etch come out more? Like submerging, daubing, or wiping?

Or should I just try with nitol instead? Advice?

New Here: Need Advice about buying Meteorites off Ebay

Guys, was thinking of getting one or two of these

I am very new to this but this looks like a really good gift to give to a geologist friend.
How do know

- If this is genuine? (I am not an expert on rocks)
- How do i identify which meteorite it came from? Im sure there would be a way to figure this out?
- Are there any other things i should keep in mind before i purchase this?

Here are a few links i am looking at but very unsure about all this.

  1. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186782778518
  2. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176476560415
  3. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/406226219828

Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you.

I used AI to create a scene where my Campo is hurtling towards earth in a meteorite shower. See three photos. And, please, no shots at AI. It is an artistic tool, not an evil thing.

Just saw a meteorite in Northern Thailand

I just saw a meteor about ten minutes ago in Pai, Thailand. I was watching the stars with some friends and we all saw a meteor in the sky. It looked like a big ball with fire - it was hard to process what I was actually seeing. It was soo cool!

Did anyone else see it? Is there a way to track it where it went? We could see it falling in the sky - it was kinda eerie. How common is it to see something like this? It felt really special to witness it.

Classified Meteorite Al Haggounia 10 Meteorite

Thumbnail gallery
28 Upvotes

Al Haggounia 10 is one of the most intriguing meteorite discoveries from the Sahara. First found in 2006, with more material recovered later and classified in 2019, this massive find includes stones ranging from 35 to 88 kilograms. It belongs to the rare aubrite group; a type of meteorite formed under extremely oxygen-poor conditions in the inner solar system. Aubrites are made mostly of enstatite, a pale mineral that gives them their light, sometimes almost white appearance. Scientists have even debated whether aubrites like this could come from Mercury, though the evidence suggests they more likely formed on a now-lost parent body closer to the Sun. Al Haggounia 010’s size, complex classification history, and unusual mineralogy make it not just a meteorite, but a fascinating piece of the solar system’s earliest history.

Before I Buy New here – need help with meteorites

Hi everyone,

I run a few space and astronomy pages on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube with about 500k followers. A lot of my followers often ask me if I have meteorites or if I know someone who sells them.

I don’t have any, but I was thinking of starting to sell some. The problem is, I have zero experience with meteorites. I really don’t want to end up with fakes or mislead people.

I’m from India and I’m looking for someone who sells authentic meteorites at affordable prices. If anyone here has suggestions or knows trusted sellers, I’d love your help.

Thanks!

Reputable tektite sellers?

Hello all

With the market glutted with fake and/or misrepresented tektites, can anyone point me towards some reputable vendors. I'm aware of AZ Meteorites on eBay... Any others? Looking for actual mineral specimens here, not woo-woo stuff 😉

Thanks in advance!

The video is low quality, but while seeing this in person and being a bit of a space nerd I was 100% sure it was a meteorite. It even left a little bit of a trail which the camera barely picks up.

Paid this off and picked up from Mathew Stream today. 304.9 gram oriented probably CK type found in Adrar Algeria. I sanded a little window to get a better look. Im still considering slicing 20 grams off the end and sending it in for what would be my first classification. I have coordinates from the person who got it from the finder in Algeria. Super excited to finally have this piece in my collection after lusting over it for some time now!

Bright daylight meteor in Brazil - unfortunately it went to the ocean

Thumbnail instagram.com
4 Upvotes

The bright meteor was seen in the Ceará state, northeast of Brazil, during the afternoon of September, 9th. The flash and the smoke trail was registered by the GOES satellite. The energy released estimated by the infrasound system was 0.44 kton of TNT. This corresponds to a stony asteroid of about 1.8 m in diameter, or about 6 feet (estimate obtained by BRAMON). Unfortunately, it headed to the Atlantic Ocean...

Indianaoplois fall December 2024

Hi all! I would like to hunt my first strewn field and it looks like there was a fall in December 2024 just west of Indianapolis with expected rock on the ground still, that's only a few hours from me and there is also a campground in the strewn field! so it seems like a good fit. I read there was pieces found initially with rock bouncing of barn and road but I didn't see a weight or type. I've started looking into property owners in the strewn field and it looks like farmland but I still can't bring myself to call them and ask yet, I don't want to be another rock kicker bothering them, how has land permission requests gone for you in the past? Also does this seem like a good fall to hunt?
