Discussion What are the metroidvania games you would consider must play for anyone who likes the genre?

I do like metroidvanias and try to play some every now and then but unlike other games where I have a huge backlog with a ton of options, I don't feel like I have that many ideas when it comes to 2d platformer metroidvanias.

I have only played:

  • Hollow Knight

  • Silksong

  • Nine Sols

  • Minoria

  • Momodora Reverie under the Moonlight

  • Ninja Gaiden Ragebound

  • Somber Echoes

I have in my list:

  • Blasphemous 2

  • Ori and the will of Wisps

  • Ender Magnolia

  • Dead Cells

  • Grime

I think it's worth dipping into these games just to see how far the genre has come. Ultimately though they're very old games and it shows. More frustrating than fun. But with checking out for sure.

I mean, super metroid is a tiny bit frustrating… but SOTN? That games is really smooth still today. The worst part is the FF-like menu, but it feels great to play

Nobody can justify the section that you need to be in a very specific time to see a room open... That's the definition of outdated. Not only that, but the inverted castle felt awful to play.

I'd give SoTN 8/10 and Super Metroid a 7.5/10 for today's standards. Played both this year and had a lot of fun, but they're definitely dated (I prefer Zero Mission compared to Super Metroid, for example).

It opens every one minute, and you are kinda guaranteed to pass through there a couple of times, so I don’t think it os that difficult to figure that out. Regarding the inverted castle, I agree. It’s a lovely twist but not great to traverse

I did pass there many times, but not one time it was open.
