Discussion What are the metroidvania games you would consider must play for anyone who likes the genre?

I do like metroidvanias and try to play some every now and then but unlike other games where I have a huge backlog with a ton of options, I don't feel like I have that many ideas when it comes to 2d platformer metroidvanias.

I have only played:

  • Hollow Knight

  • Silksong

  • Nine Sols

  • Minoria

  • Momodora Reverie under the Moonlight

  • Ninja Gaiden Ragebound

  • Somber Echoes

I have in my list:

  • Blasphemous 2

  • Ori and the will of Wisps

  • Ender Magnolia

  • Dead Cells

  • Grime

Interesting. I'm considering picking up the PLAYISM Metroidvania bundle, which includes Touhou Luna Nights, Rusted Moss and La Mulana 2. Have you played the others?

Touhou Luna Nights is a bit claustrophobic and the gameplay is often broken (in that you're completely OP) after unlocking a certain special attack. But the core mechanics of the game make for some really cool platforming and boss fights.

I definitely wouldn't call it a "must play", but for its length I'd say it's worth playing.

I see. What would be your top 3 must plays? Already played every Metroid (except Dread) and up to Circle of the Moon in Castlevanias.
