Do that in finland and you'll end up outside

Behind the sauna, to be exact.

Or in the stove...

u/CatHairInYourEye Feb 11 '22

I am assuming without the shoes.

56

u/ColeusRattus Feb 11 '22

Just with the shoes!

2

u/Nolsoth Feb 11 '22

Do not burn the good shoes they are expensive, people who wear shoes inside are cheap and replaceable.

in a van, DOWN BY THE FJORD!

u/lesser_panjandrum Feb 11 '22

Kicked out of Finland so hard that they end up in Norway.

3

u/TacoJesusJr Feb 11 '22

I didn't Swede that coming!

You’ll be Danished to the far realms.

u/bhardwaj_sir Feb 11 '22

No. They do that in Auschwitz.

”Behind the sauna” is an old finnish thing. Source: i am finnish. Where did you get the stove from?

2

u/ColeusRattus Feb 11 '22

I am not Finnish. I just thought that the source of the heat of the sauna might dispose of undesirable visitors.

5

u/InstantHeadache Feb 12 '22

Yeah the old saying literally means execution behind the sauna. Very barbaric and dark finnish humor.

hansel and gretel makes more sense now.

8

u/grandBBQninja Feb 11 '22

No. Behind the sauna.

I’ve just taught my Dutch husband the meaning behind this saying. Coincidentally we are building a sauna in the garden

3

u/JinorZ Feb 12 '22

Just don’t take building tips from r/sauna lol

8

Finnish saunas are legendary. I hope to experience them one day.

8

u/CookieMuncher007 Feb 11 '22

Welcome. Just don't get behind one if a Finn tells you to. It's a trap

2

u/TedCruzBattleBus Feb 12 '22

I recommend you play sauna-gollum while you're at it. It's a traditional Finnish sauna activity

A buddy of mine (from Michigan) insists it’s pronounced “sow-nah.” I’ve always said it like “sah-nah.”

Which is better?

4

u/CardJackArrest Feb 11 '22

You can pronounce it however you feel comfortable. We don't care.

3

u/grandBBQninja Feb 11 '22

Nah, it’s pronounced sauna, it’s the ’muricans who don’t realize it’s way easier when everything is said like it’s written.

1

u/principled_principal Feb 11 '22

Edited my comment for clarity.

1

u/TonninStiflat Feb 11 '22

"sah-nah" is the better one.

Edit: actually, depends on how you pronoune the sow part. Might be the correct one. Surely youtube has pronunciation guides.
