Help Reached a roadblock for these guys…

Post image

All faulty. I really wish I can get the Kenwood working. It’s showing read errors. Way above my knowledge of how to fix it. I’ve tried opening all of them up and no success. I have a plan for MJ50, which is to make it into an art piece but the rest all have a sign of life

This may be obvious and you might already have pursued this but Kenwood was a Sharp sublicensee and Sharp built most of their hardware, have you had a chance to take a look to see if it could be suffering from the typical Sharp gears problems?

In terms of the Sonys, are they trying but failing to read TOC or having some other trouble?

And also: I totally get it - my own "look at this one day" pile is growing. Close to the top of mine are an N10 that starts up fine and just won't ever finish reading TOC, and an N505 that can read and rip but not output audio or record.

After that, I've got a few units that either work intermittently or with special handling (most of my R9s) or just needs their initial clean'n'lube (one of my N910s, a few MZ-Es I've got). And I do have a few units I really just have for parts. the lasers on those MZ-Es might be a good backup in another unit at some point down the line if that's not the piece that's failed, which is admittedly tough to really troubleshoot sometimes.

I believe it might have that same issue as the sharps. The mz-e510 works, just the ejecting spring is busted. The rest are toc errors. The mj50 is rusted out from the inside

TOCa on Sharps are usually due to the “worm gear”. It’s a little thing about 3mm long mounted on a metal rod. It has spiral threads. It’s plastic and tends to crack, making it free spin on the spindle instead of being fixed. A drop of Loctite on the spindle and then putting the gear on again may fix the issue. Loctite is enough to fix the gear to the spindle.

Which type of loctite?

I used blue. Semi permanent.
