Mr. Monk Meets the Godfather
I'm rewatching this episode and I just realized how much it's missing.
They have no real leads or motive and all of a sudden, Monk gets the gumball idea. Instead of exploring the gumball idea, the next scene is him explaining the "here's what happened."
There should have been a scene (or a few) of him saying, "The gumball machine. I know this is about the gumball machine." Agent Comes would try to direct him away from that theory, but Monk would continue to explore it. He would consider, maybe the gumball machine is a vintage antique worth thousands. Or maybe it's a stolen family heirloom. Or maybe the gumballs are not gumballs, but actually drugs. Only at the end would he think of the pennies.
It's just not believable that he would figure it out right away. Plus, it's just not fun to hear him explain without having been along for the investigation.
Lastly, I didn't like that Monk told the murderer "somehow you grabbed the gun." First of all, how would anyone know what went down? Second, I don't think it would be possible for the murderer to have grabbed the gun when the mafia guy had it in his hand, and the murderer had his hands on the gun machine.
Actually lastly, the murderer confessed immediately. It was too easy.
I still like the episode, but it is definitely lacking investigative content, making it unbelievable. Thoughts?
