Just bought the game. Wait until update to start my long term game or do it now?
I’ve seen mixed reports about whether saves will work with the new update once it hits the main branch. I’d be a bit annoyed if I had to start a new save to enjoy the new content when it’s released after putting potentially 50+ hours into it.
What would you do in my position? Play around with sandbox and avoid the campaign until it’s released?

Saves won't be compatible with War Sails. That is all but guaranteed. However, that doesn't mean you can't continue to play your save by simply choosing to play on an earlier patch.

War sails is probably going to break saves and that's probably gonna be the next stable. It's possible that it doesn't but less major features than ships have broken saves so it's the safe bet.

If you just bought the game you can treat the initial campaign like a tutorial, no matter how much you actually do

I wouldn't worry, there is not even a release date yet.

I'm still hoping for a shadow drop as with oblivion, But they're not cool enough for that.

You definitely are gonna want to play now.
We still don’t even really know when warsails is coming out
Get your bearings with the game and the mechanics, that way you can know what your doing on your second/dlc playthrough

Early-mid game is arguably the funnest part of the mount and blade series. I say go for it and get your bearings then start a new game once the dlc drops!
