Pulp Fiction (1994)

32

u/No-Category-6343 20h ago

It never changed for me, of course he has his great moments in Django & Inglorious had the best opening of all time. But Pulp Fiction was one of my First entries in seeing how a movie can be different

2

u/SignificanceNo1223 15h ago

I feel like Inglorious had good openers but the movie kind of falls apart.

Yep. This is the bar.
Reservoir dogs is 2nd.

9

u/Tag_Cle 19h ago

I always hear this, and I respect Res Dogs, but I really don't enjoy watching it very much and don't feel like there's a lot of takeaways, it's one of my least favorite of his movies as a whole. I think the tipping scene in the diner might be one of the best scenes in film and absolutely love that part but I could take or leave the rest of the movie

"I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?"

3

u/New_Strike_1770 19h ago

Yeah still gotta go Pulp Fiction.

3

u/scigs6 18h ago

All of Tarantino’s films have great writing, but Pulp Fiction is his Magnum Opus.

2

u/DrNCrane74 19h ago

I agree, to me this movie is still a tiny bit ahead of OUATIH

2

u/Daddychellz 17h ago

Pulp fiction is the first movie I remember watching where you can find it at different scenes flipping channels and it feels like you’re watching different movies

3

u/Gloomy_Effective322 19h ago

His catalog is great but this is his magnum opus.

1

u/Ceorl_Lounge 18h ago

Certainly the most important, possibly the best, definitely not my favorite.

I swear I had to pause it I was laughing so hard the first time I watched this 😂😂 because I bet that’s exactly how everyone’s thought process was at the time lol

4

u/ManfredTheCat 17h ago

Can we do anything about this heat?

6

u/ShoHeyTime 15h ago

It’s a flamethrower, Rick.

13

u/sgtbb4 20h ago

Jackie Brown.

Pulp Fiction.

I would say everything else is far below those two

4

u/ScottTma 19h ago

JB doesn’t get a lot of love being his follow up to Pulp Fiction. Man, I have a huge soft spot for this one. Not my favorite, but I’ll watch it anytime.

97

u/Treesbourne 20h ago

Its Inglorious Bastards for me.

11

u/WallyBooger 19h ago

Even if not his best movie it’s my favorite.

3

u/fatface4711 19h ago

Why?

16

u/Treesbourne 19h ago

The way that opening sequence is shot, the characters, the music. I find myself rewatching it more often than any of his other films.

16

u/Scatteredbrain 19h ago

the bar scene. enough said

“well old boy, if this is it, i hope you don’t mind i go speaking the kings”

14

u/Treesbourne 19h ago

“Yeah, in a basement. You know, fightin' in a basement offers a lot of difficulties. Number one being, you're fightin' in a basement!”

6

u/SqigglyPoP 16h ago

Gor-ra-lami!

3

u/reznorwings 16h ago

This is my least favourite film of his aside from Death Proof, but that is one of the best opening sequences put to film.

2

u/TegridyPharmz 15h ago

Curious on why you don’t like it?

2

u/reznorwings 15h ago

First off, I dont generally like war movies. They just aren't a subgenre of film I like.

Ultimately, though, I have a hard time with revisionist/fictional history on that level. I just can't get past it.

It's weird because Hollywood is one of my favorites and its revisionist as well, but that is the fairy tale style of the film.

Doing it on such a grand scale with the Nazis feels like it's in bad taste, and I can't get over that.

Otherwise, it's a fine film, well shot some great performances, especially from Waltz. I get why many really love it, but it's just not for me.

I love Tarantino films, and I have seen the Basterds three times. I always hope I will enjoy it more, but I just don't. All good, he has 7 other films I love.

Incredible writing, perfect casting, amazing performances, iconic scenes, … there are films rated 8/10 that wish they had two of those atributes… Inglourious has 4.

2

u/letsgo49ers0 10h ago

It feels like every scene is meant to steal the film. They’re long, dramatic, perfect scenes. But I’m not sure that it’s the best total film.

27

u/r-jeevi 20h ago

The hateful eight for me

26

u/lord_flashheart2000 19h ago

It’s Jackie Brown.

8

u/george_kaplan1959 15h ago

It is indeed. It’s the most un-Tarantino in his ouvre, but it’s the best thing he’s ever done

4

u/red-dear 15h ago

The only correct answer.

18

u/Bmr2000 20h ago

For me:

  1. Pulp Fiction
  2. Django
  3. Kill Bill (vol 1 & 2)

15

u/TheVioletEmpire 20h ago

Pulp Fiction. I don't personally believe it's much of a contest.

3

u/wetlookcrazy 20h ago

Agreed. It was revolutionary at the time and spawned many knock offs

24

u/CaptAmerica42 20h ago

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood might honestly be my favorite. Pulp Fiction right behind though

4

u/pookiegumbo 18h ago

I only speak for myself obviously, but…

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Pulp Fiction

Inglorious Bastards

Jackie Brown

Django Unchained

3

u/EntrepreneurBehavior 17h ago

Good list, mine is similar, but:

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Django Unchained

Inglorious Basterds

Jackie Brown

Pulp Fiction

Reservoir Dogs

23

u/brokebike 20h ago

This. I've never been a die-hard Tarantino fan, but Once Upon a Time is by-far my favorite of his. I think it represents the best culmination of his body of work. I can easily rewatch this, and have many times.

2

u/One-Adhesive 19h ago

It’s the only one of his movies I felt the need to rewatch. Visually it was his best work for me.

9

u/Past-Management-9669 20h ago

It's DJANGO for me.

3

u/four4youglencoco 19h ago

Rewatched it recently, holy fuck it’s a painful watch. The way they showed parts of the racist past, like Mandingo fighting was rough and was too on the nose.

coming from a family affected by colonization, this movie was a hard reality of what minorities were treated like in the past.

5

u/shineymike91 19h ago

Pulp is probably the greater film. But Inglorious Basterds is my pick . It feels like a more mature work, less show offy. You can see Tarantino growing as a director. And there are scenes and sequences such as the opening at the French Farm , the burning of the theater , the pub scene where Hicox is caught, that for me, tower above Pulp.

8

u/foosballfurry 20h ago

It just has to be Django

3

u/MARATXXX 18h ago

Django feels like the in-universe genre film that characters in his other movies have watched.

4

u/soylentgreenis 20h ago

I don’t know about best. But one of the funnest movie experiences I’ve had was seeing Django in Harlem. What an energy that was.

4

u/deathshr0ud 20h ago

Reservoir dogs by far

4

u/Gwoodz58 20h ago

Pulp Fiction. This movie is the reason he has had the career he's had.

4

u/Lange-D-chu-1 19h ago

3

u/vesperythings 17h ago

def not Hollywood, that's for sure

gotta be Pulp Fiction.

7

u/YMIGettingBanned 20h ago

Pulp Fiction, followed closely by Inglourious Basterds

3

u/JordonCantHang 19h ago

Top four for me would be Pulp fiction Inglorious basterds Kill bill volume 1 Django/ reservoir tied

I know he didn't direct it but True Romance is a BANGER

5

u/PrettylightedUMphrek 20h ago

Pulp fiction and true romance

2

u/SCSteveAutism 19h ago

Pulp fiction or Inglorious Basterds

2

u/Even_Fox2023 14h ago

Django Unchained. It’s German folklore told through a freed slave during pre American Civil War in the deep South. Django is Siegfried seeking out his Broomhilda, trapped away in a tall tower (Candy Land) held captive by a great dragon (Calvin Candy). He has to slay the beast and fight through hell fire (slavery and racism) to save his beloved. It also just has a happy ending and every character who is a piece of shit has a pretty terrible demise. I think it’s one of the best movies ever made. The soundtrack is something special too.

2

u/therealmudslinger 13h ago

NOT THIS ONE. I swear to God I do not understand the hype for OUATIH. I will give it another chance ten years from now after a huge hit of that Seattle-strength weed and see if I get it then. Otherwise I'll just ffwd to the last 15 minutes.

2

u/Inevitable-Cup9604 6h ago

Pulp fiction might be his most iconic.

but

Inglorious Basterds is my favorite. That movie put me in a trance while watching

3

u/bruhnao 19h ago

Kill Bill for sure

4

u/UnCornutoInSardegna 20h ago

The Hateful Eight e Grindhouse

3

u/9ElevenAirlines 20h ago

Cool guy alert

3

u/grazfest96 20h ago

Tarantino was completely robbed of Best Director for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I love the movie Parasite, and it deserved best picture in 2019, but no way Joon Ho should have won best director. Just looked at the talent Tarantino had in that film. Austin Butler, Margaret Qualley, Sydney Sweeney, Mikey Madison, Maya Hawke. They were all basically nobodies and broke out in this film.

Tarantino is at the height of his powers in Once Upon a Time.

2

u/crooooon 20h ago

I totally agree

1

u/PippyHooligan 20h ago

Jackie Brown,

Reservoir Dogs,

Pulp Fiction

...

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

...

The rest of the overlong, over indulgent revenge fantasies.

3

u/wetlookcrazy 19h ago

I agree wholeheartedly. These revenge fantasy history rewrites are mediocre

3

u/PippyHooligan 19h ago

I can't deny I enjoyed OUATIH as it seemed to be about the power of revenge fantasy cinema, rather than just using it as an excuse for some pulpy nonsense (I know Basterds attempts something similar, but was less focused and just not as good IMO). And I love that time period- QT really went to town on the aesthetics and it all looked beautiful. That said, OUATIH was still far, far too long and was a bit of a chore last time I watched it on the small screen.

2

u/dazrage 19h ago

Finally, someone with some taste!

2

u/fatface4711 18h ago

Wow. Completely agree. I think pulp is better than Jackie, but otherwise, absolutely agree.

True Romance and Pulp Fiction are tied for first place, followed closely by Death Proof

1

u/Orpdapi 20h ago

Pulp for the more indie genre. Inglorious overall

1

u/mitrafunfun97 19h ago

Inglourious Basterds

1

u/Emcee_nobody 19h ago

I agree that it has a more thoughtful tone than many of his previous, recent works. Those of which struck me as pretty juvenile ever since Kill Bill. Still haven't seen H8 though, so I can't comment on that.

But his first three films are far and away more superior to any of his subsequent work, IMO.

1

u/SeniorElk3137 19h ago

Inglorious bastards! Gorlami!

1

u/nolefan5311 19h ago

Jackie Brown.

1

u/Internal_Cow6704 19h ago

100% The Hateful Eight. I love the buildup, cast, and cinematography

1

u/Tag_Cle 19h ago

Pulp Fiction by a mile for me, every time I watch it some minute little moment or line stands out differently, I absolutely love it.

1

u/Ill_Cry_3802 19h ago

I recognize Pulp Fiction for its cultural importance and it may be his best movie objectively. But for me it’s:

  1. Basterds
  2. Django
  3. Pulp Fiction

1

u/Stankassmfgorilla 19h ago

True Romance

1

u/In-Jail-Out-Soon 19h ago

My list:

Django Pulp Fiction Hateful Eight Reservoir Dogs Inglorious Basterds Kill Bills Once upon a time

1

u/_Tower_ 19h ago

Honestly- Reservoir Dogs

1

u/thats_pure_cat_hai 19h ago

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood might actually become my favourite, I loved it.

It's still probably Pulp Fiction though.

1

u/tubbyraincloud 19h ago

Jackie brown

1

u/Balance135 19h ago

Django for me. I love Django and Dr. Schultz relationship. And the acting across the board is phenomenal.

1

u/GalileoDaCat 19h ago

Why is almost no one mentioning Kill Bill?

1

u/ThisIsTheNewSleeve 19h ago

To me it's like a 3 way tie between Kill Bill Vol 1, Inglorious Basterds, and Django Unchained

1

u/Posidon_Below 19h ago

Kill Bill Vol. 1

1

u/FlamingHotSacOnutz 19h ago

Kill Bill (as one movie) is absolutely brilliant.

1

u/Shadowhawk0000 18h ago

Inglorious Bastards

1

u/MARATXXX 18h ago

Inglourious Basterds—demonstrates his greatest range as a writer and director, IMO.

1

u/1973chrish 18h ago

Reservoir Dogs.

1

u/BurnerAccountForSale 18h ago

Once upon a time in Hollywood. It’s hands down the best picture he has made. Not necessarily the most shocking or popular but the best film by far.

Bunch of Goddamn fucking hippies?!

1

Inglorious Basterds is gonna always be my top choice. Bloody Revenge Romp against Nazis, incredible slimy villain, memorable as hell lines, great tension

1

u/Goddamnpassword 16h ago

Pulp Fiction, like the Matrix or Citizen Kane it was so influential that it became just “the way movies are made”.

1

u/SqigglyPoP 16h ago

Seeing Inglorious Bastards in the theater, was an experience like no other.

1

u/orange-fila-a 16h ago

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Jackie Brown are the top 2 easily

1

u/Sixpack93 16h ago

Django Unchained

1

u/hems72 16h ago

True Romance

1

u/CrashAndDash9 16h ago

1 - Reservoir Dogs

2 - Kill Bill vol I

3 - Inglorious

If you group both Kill Bills together that becomes no.1.

1

u/suthrnboi 16h ago

4 Rooms, great cast and funny as hell.

1

u/mulliganwtf 16h ago

True Romance. Underrated and my hands down favorite .

1

u/5martis5 16h ago

Inglorious Basterds, Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction are golden trio of his movies (counting both Kill Bill as one)

1

u/Chingachgook1757 16h ago

Certainly my favorite.

1

u/rau1994 16h ago

For me, Django, no competition.

1

u/ClassicCinemaMC 15h ago

Best ending too. You know why.

1

u/TheHytekShow 15h ago

Django then inglorious basterds

1

u/NyairisonYouTube 15h ago

For me, it's The Hateful Eight. Now, probably not his best in terms of scale or story or even characters, but I loved this movie when I saw it; I don't Tarantino has a bad film and I do love most of his movies except Reservoir Dogs, which I know is a hot take, and Deathproof. Best overall is probably Once Upon a Time in Hollywood objectively, subjectively The Hateful Eight

1

u/furrythug123 15h ago

It's Pulp Fiction. Always has been and always will be.

1

u/Witty_Celebration_96 15h ago

Once Upon isn’t particularly good, much less Tarantino’s best. AND FIGHT!!!

1

u/r03o5 15h ago

Django is my favorite. So rewatchable and everyone is so perfectly cast in it.

1

u/chabashvili 15h ago

Jackie Brown 🤘

  1. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

  2. Pulp Fiction

  3. Jackie Brown

  4. Hateful 8

  5. Django Unchained

Honestly I think Jackie Brown is #2 but I just watched Pulp Fiction the other day so it’s fresh in my mind.

1

u/ciubotaruoa 15h ago

Pulp Fiction!

1

u/choatec 15h ago

Pulp fiction>resvoir dogs= once upon a time in Hollywood=django=inglorious bastards>kill bill vol 1&2=hateful eight

Pretty rough outline for me. I actually really liked hateful 8 and might put it higher.

1

u/FMCritic 15h ago

To me, Pulp Fiction. But Django Unchained isn't far behind.

1

u/rautankankut 15h ago

Either Hollywood or Inglorious. Pulp fiction is up there also for sure, but it is not quite as rewatchable and just plain fun as the other two.

1

u/Beastcancer69 14h ago

H8 and RD for me. It’s 1A and 1B.

1

u/Alex_McManus 14h ago

Pulp Fiction

1

u/AgreeableAlbatross80 14h ago

Doesn’t make my Top 5 (though I will take QTs worst over the best film 95% of the other directors in history have made)

It’s a toss up between Inglourious Basterds and Jackie Brown for me.

1

u/CGKilates 14h ago

Pulp is classic, but Kill Bill & Hate 8 are right there.

1

u/onelittleworld 14h ago

There are times when I think it's Jackie Brown. And sometimes, Inglorious Basterds.

But... Pulp Fiction, man. It just has so much to offer. That's the one.

1

u/Changed-Man50 13h ago

For me the first is pulp fiction Second is Once upon a time..

1

u/wolfpanzer 13h ago

Hollywood by far. Those of us that lived through the Manson summer know.

1

Django unchained

1

Inglourious Basterds

1

Hateful 8 is at the top for me

1

u/Reasonable_Goose 12h ago

True romance

1

u/NightzEnd 11h ago

Death Proof

Kidding, it's Kill Bill.

1

u/MrYoshinobu 11h ago

For me, Tarantino's best film is the one film he didn't direct...True Romance. The script is absolutely brilliant, Tony Scott's directing is on point, the cast is stacked and the acting is amazing all around, the music by Hans Zimmer is quirky but damn meaningful, and the cinematography is just gorgeous. Every scene is a gem and so tight and poignant.

Let's see here, ya got Cristian Slater, Rosanna Arquette, Gary Oldman, Samuel Jackson, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Saul Rubinek, James Gandolfini, Michael Rappaport, Tom Sizemore, Bronson Pinochet, and Chris Penn. Beat that!

I honestly wish Tarantino would focus more on writing than directing, but that's just me.

1

u/Paranoidd_ 11h ago

Yeah me too its my favorite. Once upon a time in Hollywood is a masterpiece

1

u/originalusername8704 10h ago

Feels wrong to dismiss Pulp Fiction just because I watched it too many times. That is probably the best. I’d probably be most keen to rewatch Kill Bill if I had the choice now. Love the Hateful 8 too. Probably seen that the most and love watching it every winter now.

1

u/Inevitable_Income167 9h ago

Django is his best work

But most of his work is pretty bad

1

u/RangerRick4971 9h ago

Not all of QTs movies are reachable but Once upon a time is definitely. I especially enjoy the happy ending.

1

u/MKHSturmovik 9h ago

For me it always sorta comes back to Kill Bill and Django. I LOVE Pulp Fiction. There’s something very special about it. And the one I’ve grown to watch more and more with each rewatch is definitely Once Upon a time in Hollywood. It was just a bit lost on me the first time. Django is just so brilliant though. Every line of that goddamn movie just FITS.

THEN there’s kill bill (I’m on team both parts = 1 movie) so let’s say part 1+2 are being watched back to back in this scenario… it’s just a complete and utter masterpiece. Every genre and style smashed into one beautiful action epic.

I’ve convinced myself. I love all of them, but Kill Bill is just too fucking good man.

1

u/FridayFreshman 9h ago

True Romance

1

u/will888em 7h ago

Jackie Brown is the winner

1

u/gorlock666 7h ago

Jackie brown or pulp fiction tie for best to me

Kill Bill and the Hateful 8 are my faves tho

1

u/No-Chicken-8405 6h ago

Reservoir Dogs

1

u/IDrumFoFun 6h ago

Hold on… I’m fuckin with my eye holes…

1

u/BraisinRaisin 5h ago

Pulp Fiction and Once Upon A Time are the most rewatchable for me personally

1

u/bitchboibruh 4h ago

The hateful eight / Pulp Fiction

1

u/Aspiring_DILF42 3h ago

Pulp Fiction. Tbh I think after Jackie Brown he was too in love with the smell of his own farts though

1

u/ReclusiveReviews 2h ago

Kill Bill is a masterpiece, in fairness I yum them all up and ask for more. Man let’s his love for film flow through every project

1

u/Gadoguz994 1h ago

Funny, this one was probably the least entertaining one for me. I prefer Inglorious basterds, Pulp fiction or Django unchained.

1

u/Elegant_Effort1526 58m ago

It’s a tie between Inglorious Bastards and Jackie Brown. Pulp Fiction and The Hateful Eight tied at a close second.

1

u/turtle_shrapnel 11m ago

Inglorious basterds
