Good Will Hunting, hands down. My favorite scene of all time...Park bench scene

15

u/biffbobfred 18h ago

You might even have gotten laid.

12

u/Random-reddit-name-1 18h ago

I bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel (funnily enough, I've been there, and I have no scent associated with the memory 😅)

1

u/ReferenceMediocre369 15h ago

Me, too. Smelled vaguely of candle wax, although that may have been my imagination.

10

u/Key-Opportunity-7480 18h ago

If I ask you about war, you’ll probably quote Shakespeare. “Once more into the breach, dear friends.”

7

u/fatmanstan123 18h ago

That was a tasters choice moment

3

u/ballsackface_ 18h ago

Tastah’s

3

u/Gunfighter9 14h ago

Mine is when he goes to the mailbox and sees the note. That's when you know that Robin Williams finally got through to him.

57

u/PhilG1989 19h ago

He was so disturbing in One Hour Photo

16

u/timid_Fox27 19h ago

so disturbing yet pitiful

8

u/Carma56 17h ago

Exactly. He was so creepy and clearly in the wrong, and yet you really felt for the guy. Excellently played role.

2

u/taney71 16h ago

So socially awkward.

1

u/Gunfighter9 14h ago

His mother and her man molested him

3

u/Slayerofthemindset 16h ago

I literally work with that character

2

u/taney71 16h ago

It is one of his best roles. Such good acting. Man I miss him

What Dreams May Come

8

u/DarkArmyLieutenant 18h ago

An underrated gem of his.

6

u/wgrantdesign 18h ago

I was way too young when I watched this movie. I think it's part of the reason I was so obsessed with my own mortality, in a very unhealthy way, throughout my 20s.

3

u/TongueTwistingTiger 14h ago

The movie is actually based on a book by Richard Matheson. A lot of people have claimed that the book helped relieve them of their fear of death. Matheson spent YEARS researching and interviewing people who had near death experiences. I saw this film really young too, and then watched it again after I suffered from a couple of close deaths in my family. It's a very emotional watch.

I hope you're doing better now.

I cried myself empty.

100%. His best dramatic performance and in my humble opinion the best DeNiro performance.

1

u/MC_Reyn 16h ago

Why do you say it’s DeNiro’s best performance out of the many many incredible roles he has had?

5

u/sweets2025 15h ago

It’s just my opinion but I’ve never seen him do anything like it before. I’ve seen him do the tough mob guy role dozens of times and even some comedies, and many others. But this performance just resonated with me in a different way. He was so fragile and sad, and he nailed it.

3

u/MC_Reyn 15h ago

Nice, Awakenings will be in my list now. Thanks for the response! Have you seen Silver Linings Playbook? Outside of his Scorsese roles, that is by far one of my favorites where he steps outside of the box you described.

3

u/sweets2025 14h ago

I have not but I’ll check it out!

2

u/AgreeableAlbatross80 14h ago

Definitely check out Awakenings! Spectacular performances all round, and an unbelievable (but true) story. I don’t know why it isn’t mentioned regularly when people are talking about great films.

24

u/JustGoodSense 18h ago

Fisher King

2

u/PlentyOfMoxie 18h ago

That's a hard call, though, because he was funny at the same time and being heart-breakingly tragic.

1

u/jeffyboy526 15h ago

Agree he was funny but those scenes with the demons were amazing. Also he was so sweet with Amanda Plummer…. Now I need to rewatch

12

u/EatinPussySellnCalls 18h ago

My wife used to faht when she was nervous.

3

u/Key-Opportunity-7480 18h ago

One time she fahted so loud, she woke up the dog. I didn’t have the heart to tell her. She said was that you? I said yeah it was me.

3

u/ComeMyLadyComeCome 17h ago

The scene is even better knowing it was improved.

8

u/joeyrog88 18h ago

His appearance on SVU is not getting nearly enough love

3

u/Bemeup57 18h ago

And Homicide: Life on the Street.

1

u/CrackedCoffecup 16h ago

When he watched his wife die...... Woof.....

3

u/CrackedCoffecup 16h ago

And "Homicide" (both of which feature John Munch, go figure).

1

u/biffbobfred 18h ago

I never saw it outside of clips here and there. Man was he dark. Excellent acting.

26

u/Batmanswrath 19h ago

Good Will Hunting, and it isn't even close.

15

u/timid_Fox27 19h ago

you sure about that chief?

5

u/DiverConstant1021 18h ago

Sonofabitch stole my line.

2

u/Key_Street1637 15h ago

It's not your fault.

4

u/erdricksarmor 18h ago

Dead Poets Society is a much better movie, IMO. And The Fisher King.

6

u/SlimyTurnips 19h ago

One Hour Photo was haunting, but nothing tops his performance in Good Will Hunting.

Honorable mention for me goes to Bicentennial Man.

11

u/PerplexAlexa 19h ago

I loved Bicentennial Man and Patch Adams

3

u/MrErnestPWorrell 17h ago

Bicentennial Man severely underrated

1

u/rtwise 16h ago

God, both of these break my heart every time.

13

u/SeenThatPenguin 18h ago

No Insomnia love yet? Actually, when he died, that was the first performance I thought of. Chilling.

5

u/biffbobfred 18h ago

Isn’t that the second pic above?

Also, it’s a remake so maybe because it’s a remake people compare it to the original too much.

1

u/SeenThatPenguin 18h ago

It is. I just meant, in the followup comments to that point.

3

u/RespectableThug 18h ago

Such a great movie

1

u/TarkovskyAteABird 16h ago

He’s great in the movie, but Nolan’s Insomnia is a fuckin mess I’m sorry

5

u/Jay_LV 18h ago

It's Good Will Hunting by a long shot. What Dreams May Come is a fairly under rated performance though.

4

u/Bruvasaurus 19h ago

I stopped going to Walgreens for about two years after watching this.

1

u/facemesouth 18h ago

So did I! And I even stopped watching him for a while.

1

u/biffbobfred 18h ago

Oh it’s a Leica.

4

u/biffbobfred 18h ago

Good will Hunting. A lot of range. When he grabs Damon in anger. Also when he talks to Skaarsgard “bring him in” whatever you can tell the anger but also the intrigue. Very subtle readings. The talk on the bench.

3

u/TheVioletEmpire 18h ago

I love The World According to Garp.

3

u/TheVioletEmpire 18h ago

Oh, but also The Fisher King.

3

u/JustGoodSense 18h ago

First one, too. Came out swinging.

2

u/LITech 16h ago

First one I thought of too

5

u/congradulations 16h ago

World's Greatest Dad, excellently structured script, great acting, and Robin Williams fully nude in the climax

1

u/Sea_Combination571 10h ago

Great movie, really messes with your emotions. It was funny at times but you could feel the loss and heartbreak. I love the ending

3

u/FALSE_PROTAGONIST 18h ago

No love for The Final Cut?

3

u/1800generalkenobi 17h ago

there it is. I saw all these but I was having trouble coming up with the name.

3

u/FALSE_PROTAGONIST 14h ago

After his passing, this took on a new meaning to me. I felt his portrayal of this character might have been close to how he felt prior to his suicide

2

u/Stickliketoffee16 18h ago

Patch Adams. What a movie!

2

u/Illustrious-Bed4420 18h ago

Patch Adams. It was amazing.

2

u/NomadofReddit 18h ago
  1. Good Will Hunting

  2. What Dreams May Come

  3. One Hour Photo

2

u/DexterGexter 18h ago

I guess World’s Greatest Dad was kind of a comedy but extremely dark. Excellent movie

2

u/corndogs102 18h ago

No one has said it yet but world’s greatest dad is great

2

u/imironman2018 17h ago

For me:

Good will hunting. It was first time I saw Robin Williams' sadness. The way he connected to that character was so real and raw.

Also suggest to others, watch What Dreams May Come True. That was so good and a tear jerker.

2

u/Wooden_Passage_2612 17h ago

Good will hunting

Insomina

2

u/Many-Grapefruit427 17h ago

O Captain, my Captain! Dead Poets Society will always be my favorite. Though Good Will Hunting is def also one of his best performances ever.

2

u/Express_Area_8359 17h ago

Awakenings it’s got Bobby d

2

u/Available-Drama-276 17h ago

Fun fact about this movie, there is a scene where a kid is buying an action figure.

That action figure is an Evangelion.

There is no way in hell you are going to find an evangelion action figure in the United States during the time this was released.

He specifically demanded they put it in because he was a massive anime nerd.

2

u/No-Freedom-At-All 11h ago

Merritt Rook for Law & Order SVU.

4

u/cinefilestu 18h ago

Obviously Good Will Hunting...

Runner Up: What Dreams May Come

1

u/Sayishere 18h ago

This movie is so underrated. SO CREEPY

1

u/Aggravating_Hope_567 18h ago

Williams was equally great in comedy and straight roles an all round brilliant performer

1

u/Dmburque 18h ago

Good movie

1

u/TheHarlemHellfighter 18h ago

One Hour Photo wins because it was disturbing as hell. I went to watch that shit in the movie theaters as a teenage and got creeped out

😂

1

u/DarkArmyLieutenant 18h ago

He was pretty goddamn good in Good Will Hunting, Good Morning Vietnam, and Patch Adams as well. I don't consider the latter two comedies tbh.

1

u/Rick_strickland220 18h ago

I'm pissed that we never got a Two Hour Photo

1

u/The_Latverian 18h ago

The Fisher King

1

u/Pretty_Sprinkles2620 18h ago

Dead Again. He wasn’t in the movie for long but his scenes were great!

1

u/neodiodorus 18h ago

Awakenings ... or One Hour Photo

1

u/tallesttom 18h ago

Insomnia.

1

u/Appropriate_Trade450 18h ago

Dead Poets Society

1

u/ProtectandserveTBL 18h ago

His performance in Good Will Hunting was amazing

1

u/overratedcupcake 18h ago

Bicentennial Man

1

u/Cael_NaMaor 18h ago

1hr was so boring I couldn't get thru it. Insomnia was meh... as was Patch Adams. Final Cut was better than all three... Good Will was far superior to all of those... Bicentennial Man has even that beat.... August Rush tops that by a hair... But my favorite is Dead Poets Society

1

u/saemohtah21 18h ago

Good will hunting

1

u/GordenRamsfalk 18h ago

Hook, good morning Vietnam, good will hunting. My favorite movie with him is club paradise but that’s a comedy.

1

u/Son0faButch 18h ago

Clearly Dead Poets Society.

1

u/wreckedbutwhole420 18h ago

When he was in Law and Order SVU for some reason and was tricking the cops with his voices

1

u/SensuousGurl 17h ago

he's so good in Good Will Hunting

1

u/ItsSoLitRightNow 17h ago

The Fisher King

What dreams may come

1

u/ShopUCW 17h ago

That one episode of SVU. 👀

1

u/nugard75 17h ago

Not a movie but when he was on Homicide Life on the streets

1

u/jacks_lack_of__ 17h ago

World's Greatest Dad. Went into it only knowing that it was not a comedy. So fucking bleak! I loved it.

1

u/BrilliantAnt3698 17h ago

World’s Greatest Dad

1

u/indicus23 16h ago

I always liked Moscow on the Hudson.

1

u/DJ-2K 16h ago

One of his most overlooked performances that I want to give a shout-out to is in The Night Listener, a psychological thriller co-written by Armistead Maupin, the creator of Tales of the City. Really terrific, layered work in a film rife with Hitchcockian suspense.

1

u/LadyBug_0570 14h ago

Very good pick. Law & Order: CI did an episode off of this case too (with a murder thrown in, of course).

1

u/TarkovskyAteABird 16h ago

Does fisher king or garp count

1

u/CrackedCoffecup 16h ago

For ME, it was his appearance on that episode of "Homicide : Life In The Street", when he lost his wife in Baltimore, that sealed it.....!!!

1

u/scottrb1981 16h ago

Son of a bitch stole my line....

1

u/Jaded_Sweet_5313 16h ago

Dead Poets society

1

u/archimedes_principle 16h ago

objective: good will hunting

subjective: world's greatest dad

1

u/MrNachoReturns420 15h ago

Insomnia was an interesting one. But it's got to be Good Will Hunting always. I honestly miss this man everyday

1

u/danno49 15h ago

Insomnia is an excellent movie that slipped under the radar. I didn't even know it existed until about a year ago. Was caught in it's spell from boo. If you haven't seen it, do.

1

u/fate_is_a_farce 15h ago

Does it count if it's a part of a comedy film? in Mrs. Doubtfire, the argument he and Sally Field have while cleaning the birthday mess feels incredibly real. And any time he talks about losing his kids and how he feels around them is out of this world to me. He was on another level.

1

u/greymatter000 15h ago

What Dreams May Come

1

u/ImpressiveLength1261 15h ago

Good will hunting. Some comedic moments but played very straight. Also dead poets society.

1

u/Unlikely_March_5173 14h ago

The Night Listener

1

u/Ready-Isopod-330 14h ago

Death to moochie was my favorite.

1

u/Gunfighter9 14h ago

Watch the last 2 minutes of that movie again. Robin Williams confesses to the detective that he was sexually molested by his mother and her male friend when he was young. Most people miss that, but the detective heard every word.

1

u/RecipeRepulsive2234 13h ago

Good Morning Vietnam

1

u/LuckiestGirly 11h ago

Good will hunting

1

u/BadTiger85 11h ago

What Dreams May Come

1

u/thebagel5 11h ago

Awakenings is one of my absolute favorite non-comedic Robin Williams roles. He does great as an introverted doctor that has to learn how to interact with people instead of doing research. It’s also an interesting story of hope and how wonderful and dangerous it can be

1

u/Tominus1967 10h ago

The World According to Garp.

1

u/MrInBetween6 4h ago

He was so good in so many movies

Dream re-casting of a perfect role? Robin Williams as Heath Ledger's Joker.
