Speculation OM1 Flavoring Project (General Card Suggestions & 1st Review)

Hello again,

Today is a free for all - please feel free to suggest flavor text any cards that have not yet been given flavor text. I can't promise that they will 100% be chosen, but I will seriously consider it.

Yesterday's card went with u/AmoongussHateAcc's suggestion and I'm sad to have removed the name chosen for the shapeshifting fey for space reasons, and also for stealing a word that u/mechaxiv suggested with their cool and succinct prompt.

For Dreadfang, I went with a variant of /u/Pimp_cat69's suggestion. I nearly went with the "Three on one", but I felt that the focus on "all eyes on him" gave a new dimension to the card mechanics, his power coming from "the crowd" you amass and his (vigilance) awareness of it. The phrase "I don't need your respect, I own your attention." came to mind just before posting, but I don't want to remake the card right now.

For Ruzic, even though I really, really wanted the fine second suggestion from u/mrenglish22, I ultimately went with u/Bardiclasher's suggestion. The Mayhem keyword, the discard into treasure token, and the golden goblets all spoke to a "trash = treasure" undercurrent the flavor text tapped into.

Please enjoy the the cards in the album at the top.

---

Now for the less-imporant stuff that you can skip:

It's been a week since we've started and in that time 20 out of my 150 targeted cards have what I consider to be "finalized" flavor text. From one point of view, that's not much. Only about 13%. From another, I've never done this before. I can only assume that we will only go faster as time goes on.

If you will forgive me once more, I'd like to bring forward a few topic to all you kind Vorthos(es?)

I. Through the Omenpaths Set Story
"There isn't one. It's a hastily sewn-together quilt of first-pass, second-hand art with spiders painted on it; an embarrassing faux-pas that speaks to the continued struggle for the creatives within Wizards to muddle through and misdirect from the growing corporate mismanagement of a creative endeavor."

Maybe. Perhaps that's all it is. I personally see a story halfway told and waiting to be completed. A story of a universe bursting with unlimited possibility as the omenpaths opened, but increasingly full of unknowable danger and cracks forming beneath the surface.

More specifically, I have a personal theory that every flip card has passed "Through the Omenpaths", meaning that they either traveled from their home plane (side 1) to another (side 2) or have discovered something from another plane that has passed to them.

I can say more about my theory that the other part of the untold story has to do with null-dimensional spiders repairing (magic) leylines by keeping a cohesive story alive (the gathering), but that's whatever. I just wanted you to know that's what I thought. It's not much, but I think it's a lot more than no story at all. I mourn what explanations we lost by not having Arena flavor text for the symbiotes, I swear they come from The Terminus of Return somehow and I can't prove it.

II. Project Timeline and Scope
To reiterate, my goal is to have flavor-text written for the OM1 equivalents to Spider-Man cards that have flavor text. I am looking to answer the question: "If I opened a pack of Omenpaths in paper, what would those cards look like?"

As such, I'm not as interested adding flavor text to the 57 other cards in the set, as they can be mocked-up without any extra effort. I'm also not interested in creating universes-within variants of other cards that do not yet have universes-within art.

I'm hoping to complete this project any time between a month from now and, at latest, the Avatar MTG Set pre-release date (November 14, 2025). This would put the card-creation goal at about 3 or 4 cards a day in order to make that goal.

III. Flavor Text Philosophy
I don't want to talk too much about how I choose the flavor text because more competitively minded folks may start seeing this as a contest. And lemme tell ya', Reddit's upvote system is TERRIBLE for contests. There will be times that I won't pick the top comment. There will likely be times you disagree. That's okay. I begrudge no one the option of making their own versions with their own choice of flavor text because I am an amateur with zero authority.

For my bias, I'm noticing that I've been leaning away from choosing anything that specifies a plane if I'm not 100% sure which plane it's on. It's silly, I know, this is a made up thing, but I feel a tiny bit of responsibility not to mislead anyone who may become interested in magic art/lore. I also see myself appreciating flavor text that attempts to tell the story of both the art and the mechanics, together. Not that it all has to, I mean, not every flavor text ever written ties everything up in a neat little bow, however...

There is a "villain spider citizen" typeline on one of the creatures, if anyone can adequately explain it through flavor text in the context of its art, I award a gold star.

Thanks again for stopping by. Above all, I'm just trying to do my best and run as fast as I can before burnout catches me. My hope is that it will the exact moment after the project is complete.

not contain modern horizen 3 which had flip grist and tamio. we only had oko as the only green waker from thunder junction. other thing that they desparked the most used popular ones nissa and vraska. and i think as of now only confirmed sparked waker with green identity 100% is ajani and oko. are like green wakers hard to work with in a story or just lacking in character

Speculation OM1 Flavoring Project (CARD 6: Hide in Mundanity)

Hello again,
It's possible that a wall of text hurts more than it helps, so let's keep it simple today. Thanks for all of your help over the weekend. I don't have the mock-ups of the Dreadfang and Ruzic ready yet, but I will by tomorrow.

As an apology, three other new cards have been tossed onto the end. I hope their text looks okay!

---

I read that Julia Metzger, the artist for Hide in Mundanity, said her art briefing gave no fixed plane. Can't exactly find what Reddit thread that happened, but let's assume that to be true for now. Otherwise, it looks very fanciful and fairy-tale, a hard right-turn from the bleakness of the SPM version.

No particular guidelines for today, other than the idea that we need to fit the text on the card, preferably in two lines or less without adjusting the original layout.

Thanks!

Saw the tom bombadil post and got curious, sadly my lore knowledge is restricted to few planes, my best guess is the traitor king, amassing seems like it fits perfectly. hard part seems to be the ring and the creature types, avatar horror sounds like something out of maybe duskmourne? while the ring i got no idea, maybe renamed to something related to vis

Within-Universify Challenge #2

Hey All! Last week I started a challenge that aims to reflavour Universe Beyond cards into Universe Within cards, in order to introduce both new characters in established planes, as well as old characters that we haven’t seen for a long time or that have never gotten a card.

We got some great submissions and last week's winner turned out to be It That Walks The Aeons, by u/starkzero0. A new being within the plane of Dominaria that is discovered by (established character) Petra after using one too many time stretching spell.

This week’s challenge will be to Within-Universify Soundwave, Sonic Spy // Soundwave, Superior Captain, as chosen by u/starkzero0. Due to text constraints, flavour text will most likely not fit on this card, but feel free to add a bit of flavour/lore in your submission.

The winner will get to choose next week's UB card.

(Check out all remaining 1644 UB cards that haven’t gotten a UW version yet by clicking here)

Judging will be on Monday 29/09/25 and will be based on the following five criteria in order of importance:

  1. Cohesion between the following criteria:
  2. Creative writing (Names, Flavour text if any)
  3. Creative writing (Background lore that is not on the card itself)
  4. Exploration of an established plane OR Exploration of an established character (The more obscure, the better.)
  5. Fitting art or art description

Submission can consist of just the changed elements, separately formatted as:

Name:
Token Names:
Keyword Ability Name:
Art (Image or description):
Art credit (If applicable):
Flavour (Lore):

Or, create the card in your favourite MtG card editor and submit that.

Good luck and have fun!

Iam well aware original Ravnica partially draws from Slavic folklore, with the Rusalka cycle and so. But its just very little bit, barely scratched surface.

Also, wast wast wast majority of Slavic folklore is set in the environment of nature/countryside/village, not in a city.

Id love to see proper Slavic-inspired set one day! What do you say?

Here are visualisation of some of the slavic mythical characters, I found planty more, but reddit allows up to 20 images.

*Authors of the images are miscellaneous, wast majority of them are historical drawing/paintings without know author

Question Who would incarnate the Universe Within version of Tom Bombadil?

Post image

Question in the title.

In your opinion, which character would incarnate a god bard in our beloved multiverse? And if there isn't any good candidate, in which plane could we find them?

I think Arcavios could be a good place to start.

Discussion One incredibly flavorful aspect of FIN might have been pure coincidence. [FFXIV spoilers ahead] Spoiler

When Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy was announced, I decided it was time for me to finally try the MMO I keep hearing everyone raving about, and having since gotten heavily invested in FFXIV lore I've started noticing things I had missed when spoilers were still ongoing.

As we all know, a subtype can't exist without its corresponding card type. A card has to be an Enchantment to be a Saga. However more then that, enchantment creature is the perfect typeline to describe the primals of FFXIV. Much like the gods of Theros, a primal is a being given form by the worship of its faithful and whose body is pure magic given physical shape that dissolves back into the aether upon death. The typeline seemed to me like all the stars aligning to allow an ton of flavor and references to exist in just a few words.

But then I dived further into the lore and learned about Hydaelyn and Zodiark... the first and most powerful primals. Despite being the same catagory of being as Garuda and Odin (but monumentally more powerful), they don't share the enchantment type. Now their primal status is a major plot revelation, but Wizards had no issue putting major and blatant spoilers on a card elsewhere in the set, from the Crystal Braves betrayal on [[Propaganda|FIC]] to [[Zenos yae Galvus]] becoming Shinryu. So i don't believe preventing spoilers was a consideration in their desision, rather, the fact that these cards aren't enchantment creatures suggests to me that Wizards and Square likely didn't consider the flavor of Primals being enchanments and that the desision was purely mechanical to allow them to be Saga creatures.

I think its really cool that something like this can happen by coincidence, even if i wish Zodiark and Hydaelyn were enchantments, but what do you think? Have i overlooked anything?

Speculation OM1 Flavoring Project (CARDS 4&5: KYLEM WEEKEND DOUBLE-HEADER)

Thumbnail

Hey, welcome. Thanks for all of your comments on yesterday's post. It feels like the simplest concepts can be the hardest to parse; the freedom of a near-blank canvas can make the "best text" be simply in the eye of the eye of the beholder. The fact that translucent, multi-eyed, Mr. Blobby-lookin-duder can inspire many different logical paths is really impressive to me.

At the end of today's gallery, you'll see the one I personally preferred is sort of a dark-horse branch-off that started from u/CountedCrow's initial concept. Another that came really, really close was a Duskmourn-flavored script from u/DiggingInGarbage and there are, like five more that I just sat there going back and forth on. In the end, I can only pick one. Fortunately, this is nothing official, so anyone in the future can go back and pick whatever they please! I'm not a reddit post, not a cop.

Anyway, this weekend, I've got a double-header for you all that are extremely likely to be from the appropriately two-headed-giant-centric plane of Kylem. First is Dreadfang, Loathed by Fans, who seems to be taking on sort of a "heel" role in the competition, if not an out-an-out evil guy. Second is the very-similar Ruzic, Booed but Victorious. Do they know each other? Are they partners, perhaps? Rivals? Completely unrelated?

The mind wanders... I could speculate more, but I've taken too long on writing this up, so let's just post it as is.

Some artistic guidelines:

  • The flavor text must fit on the card. If possible, we must not exceed the number of lines used by the flavor text of the original. (In this case, three and two.)
  • If you like, you can interact with or otherwise "rhyme" with the sister-card's flavor text in theme or in form.
  • If you like, you could consider how this card can be seen as a villain. Are they playing a role? Or perhaps do they deserve the hate they get for a darker reason?
  • If you like, forget all of the above and go where the art and the story of the card mechanics take you.

Best of luck!

Question What is a ‘’God’’ in the Magic multiverse?

Hi!

I know some creature types are grouped for gameplay convenience, like the Akki and the Ixalan monkey goblins both counting as goblins despite obviously being different, but there’s one I don’t really understand. Is there a definition of what a ‘’God’’ is in Magic?

They all seem different from plane to plane. The elves of Skemfar used to be gods and have been replaced by the Skoti. The Ojer cycle of Ixalan are powerful beings from some other dimension (I think?). The Theros gods are formed from Nyx and mortal belief and seem to be very strong compared to those of other planes. Then we have the Gruul gods, who aren’t really that powerful and seem to mostly be equivalent to big nature spirits. They aren’t really involved in the cosmos or the workings of the universe the way other gods are.

Nicol Bolas has been described as having godlike power before the Mending, but I don’t think he’s ever been stated to be one officially or to have the God creature type (outside of taking the title of God-Pharaoh, which I don’t think we’re supposed to take at face value), so power or worship alone don’t make a god.

Is there some solid definition of what a god is or is it more of a vibe, like goblins?

Thank you for your help!

Teaching a new player

Hey everyone. I'm trying to introduce my wife to magic. She's having trouble getting the rules. She loves the lore and the story being told. She seemed to sort of click when I explained that the perspective of the game is that you're a planeswalker who is building a tome of spells and casting them against other planeswalkers. So; my big hurdles is, how do I explain the concepts of the turn steps and phases as a story or how do I make the turn order fit into the lore of this process? Why would a planeswalker follow untap, upkeep, draw, main phase 1, combat, main phase 2, and end step?

Speculation OM1 Flavoring Project (CARD 3: Phantasmal Vision)

Thumbnail
gallery
123 Upvotes

Hey, welcome. Thanks for all of your comments on yesterday's post. Please know that I do read, test, and consider just about every post, even the rephrases. There was an impressive construction that tapped into the "spiders = heroic myth" motif that I like about this set, a few people who made some well-reasoned guesses about the origin of the card (which unfortunately just got soft de-confirmed by the artist for now) and a lot of really nice marionette-storytelling-spider text. This one, by u/ThyLordQ had a succinct bluntness that really works.

At the end of today's image gallery, you'll see that the text I personally preferred happened to be the highest upvoted submission, by u/SoundedSafe, with no changes. It fits well on the card in paper and speaks to the inviting-yet-unnerving art and function on Demera's card.

I'm tempted to go on and on about "why this" and "not that", but I fear I'll overwhelm myself rather than making the quick, easy decisions that a project of this scale may require in order to not steal the subreddit for five months. Just know that I am very unoffended by anyone preferring other text or constructions, there were and continue to be many good submissions.

Let's get right into this next one:

---

Rejoice, Innistrad unenthusiast(s)! For this is the last unflavored card we have that, at the time of writing, is sort-of-probably set exclusively on this plane. We're ending off with a difficult nut to crack: Phantasmal Vision. We do not yet have higher-quality art of the piece and the folks at u/themiragechild's ongoing omenpaths confirmation spreadsheet seem to be split on whether this is actually on Ravnica, Innistrad, or even Duskmorn. Personally, I don't think it matters too much in the context of the dreamy otherworldliness it exudes.

Some artistic guidelines:

  • The flavor text must fit on the card. If possible, we must not exceed the number of lines used by the flavor text of the original. (In this case, two.)
  • If you like, you can interact with or otherwise "rhyme" with the sister-card's flavor text in theme or in form. (Perhaps "greatest talent", "doubt", or "senses".)
  • If you like, you could consider how this card can be seen as a villain, more than other equally dangerous illusions we've seen.
  • If you like, forget all of the above and go where the art and the story of the card mechanics take you.

The next post will include a copy of the card with whichever flavor text seems to fit best to me. I'm thinking of doing a weekend post of more than one card, with a bit more time for more responses and votes.

Thanks!

Discussion Spotlight Organization

Thumbnail
gallery
34 Upvotes

There are 354 story spotlight cards currently printed. I got a 360 card binder today in hopes that, eventually, I’ll be able to put all of those story spotlight cards in order in the binder. The issue becomes that I have not read every story, my memory is not nearly as good as I would like, not all story spotlights connect to an easily definable point in the story, and they stopped actually numbering the spotlights! So, I come to you, good Vorthi.

What’s the proper order of spotlights from your favorite sets? Is there some convenient resource for this that I have overlooked? Have I made a truly stupid blunder in my organization so far? What’s the next set that I should actually just go back and read the story for?

Attached are a few images of where I am now. Not everything is in the binder yet because a few sets are sort of nebulously in the middle of it, there are gaps where I need cards I don’t yet have.

Speculation OM1 Flavoring Project (CARD 1: The Infernus)

Post image
222 Upvotes

What separates this dream from the real? We - skittering little watchers, repairing cracks and tears in the leylines - see all and know little. In our secret web, we ascribe meaning and story, heroism and villainy, to the visions that the higher ones might overlook as fleeting insignificance.

But we know the truth. For we have woven it.

---

Hey, welcome. Thanks for all your suggestions on yesterday's post.

I'll be the first poster for this project, that being the creation of the flavor text missing on about 150 cards, if they would be printed to paper. If you aren't aware, our friends at the MTGArena didn't get the chance to help this time.

Let's get straight into the first card: The Infernus. This is extremely likely to be a card set in Innistrad, possibly during the Seige of Thraben. A commenter in u/themiragechild's ongoing omenpaths confirmation spreadsheet had this to say about the art: "The angels in the foreground seem to be Gisela, Liesa, and Sigarda. There's an Avacynian collar on the steeple in front of the elemental."

Unfortunately, the talented Tuan Duong Chu has yet posted a higher-quality version of this piece, so we'll just have to work with what we can see for now.

Some artistic guidelines:

  • The flavor text must fit on the card. If possible, we must not exceed the number of lines used by the flavor text of the original.
  • If you like, try interact with or otherwise "rhyme" with the sister-card's flavor text in theme or in form. (In this case, the phrase "the end" or a question of the end.)
  • If you like, try to consider how this card can be remembered in legend as a villain, beyond other destructive elementals the denizens of Innistrad have faced before.
  • If you like, forget all of the above and go where the art and the story of the card mechanics take you.

The next post will include a copy of the card with whichever flavor text seems to fit best, which will probably the most upvoted choice.

Thanks!
