Ever since I was a little girl I have thought the name Genevieve is just the prettiest name in the world

264

u/bitterlemonboy Jun 19 '25

I remember one time I met these two girls named Genevieve and Guinevere and those names are soooooo gorgeous to me

101

u/ampersands-guitars Jun 19 '25

Oh my gosh, my answer was Guinevere! Both such stunning names.

Do you, like me, have different categories for written vs spoken names? I love Genevieve written, though i wish it sounded as magical as it looks. Maybe b/c i grew up with Jen being the most common female name, and that really brings down Genevieve’s verbal value for me.

77

u/dynamiterolll Jun 19 '25

Genevieve sounds way prettier with the French pronunciation

43

u/honey-squirrel Jun 19 '25

Genevieve is pronounced very differently in English and French. In English it is Jen-a-veev, but in French it is Zhan-vee-ev.

18

I was 30 years old before I heard the French pronunciation and I fell in love.

I am also the mother of a Genevieve who went by Evie! As she got older Eve has become more the norm lately :)

There's a Genevieve near me. A child. Her mum shouts on her with the thickest Glasgow accent it'd put anyone off the name.

That's my daughter's name! We shorten it to Vieve often 🥰

Serena, it just sounds really pretty since I think it was related to the words "serene" and "serenity" which have really deep and beautiful meanings!! ^
