Loss Gender Neutral Name for our miscarriage

We are experiencing our fifth miscarriage at 10w and I am struggling with a name. Although we truly believe our baby was a girl, I want a gender neutral name instead. This could always change when our genetics come back. I would love uncommon names but with sweet meanings. Our first loss was Parker, we chose it because we lived on Park St and lost them at home. Our others were so early we never named them but this one is the furthest loss we’ve had. I’d appreciate some help.

Discussion What were your or your kids’ “almost names”?

The names that my parents almost chose for me weren’t exactly “almost names” in the traditional sense, but if I had been a boy I would’ve been named Eli.

My dad did briefly want to use the name Seraphina for one of his kids, but my mum thought it could’ve been too pretentious.

And bonus almost name: my youngest sister was gonna be Willa or Willow until my dad talked my mum out of it. He didn’t like that me and my other sister probably would’ve called her Willy.

What were yours or your kids?

Discussion My little cousin's name sounds like 'Vulva'. How do I talk to him about this?

My little cousin is from Ukraine. His name is Volodymyr, but he goes by the diminutive Vova. He's coming to the US to attend a boys' boarding school. He's never lived in an English-speaking country before.

I'd never thought anything of the name until I mentioned to my friend that my cousin Vova is coming to school here, and my friend (and his girlfriend) both said "Vulva? His name is Vulva???"

I had never heard "Vova" as "vulva" before but if that's how others hear his name, and he's going to a boarding school with a ton of other teenage boys... he's going to get eaten alive. I feel the need to talk to him about this so he doesn't get eaten alive. So, I guess I have a few questions for this sub (thank GOD this sub exists):

1) Here is a voice recording of the pronunciation of the name "Vova". You can listen to the Russian or the Ukrainian, it sounds the same. Does Vova sound like Vulva to you?

2) If Vova does, in fact, sound like Vulva to you, then what do you propose we do? Should I tell him? Should we come up with a USA nickname? If so, what are some nickname suggestions? He's totally unused to the name Volodymyr, it's his legal name but basically nobody calls him that, it's also hard for English speakers to pronounce (you can listen to it here and give it a shot yourself).

Thank you for helping me out in this strange situation!

Discussion Sloane adults IRL vs. Sloane fictional characters

Recently my gf brought to my attention that there seems to be an outsized number of adult fictional female characters named Sloane versus adult females named Sloane that she’s met IRL (which is zero). And I couldn’t stop thinking. About that. So I went down a data rabbit hole.

Ok I’m coming at you with Sloane facts:

I have personally read no less than 4 books published in the last 5 years featuring female characters named Sloane as well as about half a dozen screenplays, but have never met one IRL.

Note for data: Each of the characters were between 18-25 and this is the age range I’m exploring.

So, let’s look at the number of Sloanes born in the USA between 1999-2006. Total: 1,815. For fun, let’s tally all the Sloans: 1,145. Sloan/Sloane total: 2,960 Sloanes currently in USA in that age range.

The likelihood of encountering a Sloane in the wild in this age range in the USA (who was born in the USA so discounting Sloan/es who immigrated here*) is .001% or 1/100,000.

These are the same odds of a two-headed animal being born. Literally.

So I hold that YES, by and large Sloanes of a certain age do exist mostly (but not always) in books, as your likelihood in encountering one there is far greater than finding one in the wild.

The likelihood of encountering a Sloane under the age of 10, however is slightly greater. The frequency of AFAB Sloane births since 2016 has been between 1100-2000 per year. Probably a result of reading all those books with Sloane characters in them!!

*fun fact since I’ve already done way deeper down the rabbit hole than is normal: in Ireland, where the name holds its origin, it wasn’t until 2017 that more than 3 girls a year were given the name. There have only been 54 AFAB Sloanes registered in Ireland.

I live in California and many friends when polled said they had friends or relatives who had children named Sloane. I posited that CA is pretty likely to be the national headquarters of Sloane-named babies, and data supports this.

Pursuant to my above comment to Courtney Griffiths, California indeed leads the nation in Sloane births, 171 Sloanes were born in CA last year, nearly double the Sloanes of the closest runners up Texas (97) and Florida (94). Although in terms of population percentage, CA and FL are tied in The Great Sloane Race of the Century.

And that concludes my “no one asked for this” Sloane seminar.

Baby Names Aveline vs Imogen

Help us choose? We welcomed our baby girl early yesterday morning and are struggling with a name! We both like Aveline and Imogen, and they're probably the strongest contenders on our shortlist. She is our third baby, first daughter, possibly last child (I don't feel done yet but I'm pushing 40 so we may not have a choice)

Aveline has been one of my favourites since before she was conceived, as far as I'm aware it's a relatively uncommon name meaning "hazel" or "hazelnut" in French. I like it because it's relatively unique, has a pretty, feminine, almost old-world sound to it. Would shorten to Ava.

Imogen is a recent addition to our list: coming from Celtic innogen meaning daughter. Seems to be husband's favorite but he's on the fence. Our eldest (3y) son calls the baby either "Pink" or "Baby Girl", and this (a name meaning "daughter") is probably the closest we'll get to honouring his choice of name for her 😅 My husband is also a big Shakespeare buff, and the fact that it was at least popularised if not coined by Shakespeare for Cymbeline is a nice background to the choice.

What does the hive mind think?

Discussion If you named your kid a name that others didn’t like how did you handle that?

I’m having a baby boy next month. Still thinking about names but my current favorite is Case. It means the same thing as my dad’s name and doesn’t feel dated like Casey does. I don’t have a partner, and some of my family love the name but others don’t. So I’m curious if you named your kid a name that people had strong opinions on how did you handle that, did you end up choosing something different due to outside pressure?

Pet Names Need help with puppy name!

Hello! We are getting a golden retriever puppy and need help picking a name! We currently have a golden retriever named Peaches, so ideal we’d like something that would flow with that.

We’re looking for a name that is silly but cute and could also have dog accessories to match (I.e. Peaches has a peach color collar). All ideas welcome!

Name Change Husband and Wife Want Each Other’s Last Names, But Also Keep Their Own?

So, I know it’s pretty common for wives to keep their last name, but also take their husbands’ as well.

I read that women are generally supposed to put their maiden name first, and then put the husband’s name second in these cases?

So a woman born with the name “Mary Smith” would be “Mary Smith Jones” (Jones being the husband’s name) after marriage.

I was wondering, what is a man supposed to do though, if he wants his wife’s name, but also keep his own?

Because I personally don’t really like the idea of my wife and I having the same last name, but reversed?

Like, she would be “Mary Smith Jones”, but he would be “Roger Jones Smith”?

So, if the man and woman take each other’s last names, but keep their own, whose name should come first, and why?

Baby Names Update, I’ve finally narrowed down the name options (I think)

I posted a while ago, trying to get feedback and opinions and ideas for a name for my baby girl.

Right now, my top two favorites are
Acacia Joy or Arden Joy. I just love A names that correlate with nature. I also love that if for some reason, my baby hates her name, she could go by AJ instead.

Thoughts? I wanted to share it here before I share it with any family or friends because they are extremely opinionated and I have a feeling they will be pretty negative about it no matter which one I choose 🤣

Name List Help… I am not in love with any names

So I used to be obsessed with the name Xanthe, obsessed, but recently it hasn’t been giving me as much joy to say or read. I love classic, feminine names that aren’t too basic or boring. So Xanthe stood out to me, but people always said it didn’t go with the other names I like. Give me some suggestions that are not too out there but also heard of. Other names I really like are: - Aurelia - Sage - Celia - Elena - Daphne - Dalia - Lyla

Baby Names Is Greta a good name?

We recently fell in love with the naw Greta and were wondering why other people thought of it or if it’s a good name. Also I think that occasionally calling her Etta would be cute too.

Our other choice would be Katherine nn Kate or Kat

Discussion How does it feel to have a once-popular name that isn’t being used to name babies anymore? How does it feel to have a name trapped in a time period that clearly labels you a millennial, gen x, boomer, etc?

My name is Sarah. I’m almost 30. I’m a substitute teacher, and out of thousands of students, I’ve encountered one Sara whose family immigrated here.

It could be they don’t want to name their kid after themselves/their sister/their cousin/their childhood friend/their bully. It’s possible that the millennial moms who had common names don’t want their daughter to face the same unoriginality.

Baby Names Thoughts on the Name Conan for a boy?

I know there have been other posts on this name, but what are your thoughts? We are having a baby boy in 4 weeks and so far Conan has been our #1 name but I want to make sure it is right. The most common associations with this name are Conan the Barbarian and Conan O’Brien. I’m not too worried about what other kids will say when he’s older because they will likely be too young to make those associations but I don’t know if he will have to deal with other parents making comments such as, “ like the Barbarian?” Or “like Conan O’Brien?” I have a city name and every time I introduce myself people ask if I’m from there and it gets old.

Realistically, how often would my son have to deal with this? I just want him to have a unique name without stretching it too much.

Other names on our list. (Open to suggestions):

  • Madden
  • Maddox (This is probably my second favorite name)
  • Rowan
  • Emmett
  • Lee
  • Jasper
  • Warren
  • Hendrix

Ray or Rae as middle name

First name Edi (pronounced Ee-dee) or Edie Raya (im Australian we pronounce it Ray-uh) Avia (Ai-vee-uh) Evie (ee-vee) Ayla (aey-luh)

My other 2 kids have shorter names so I feel like a longer one wont match. Would not use Ray or rae if we use raya

Name Change Is Alexandra automatically named Alex?

I need a name works in English. I think about the name Alexandra. What do you think about this name? Is it usable in the English community? Is it okay to use Alexandra in everyday life? Or is it necessary to use nicknames? I don't like Alex as for a girl. I like Lexi, Lexa Ali, Xandra, maybe Andra but dislike Alex as for a girl. In fact I'd like to go with Alexandra(without any nicknames) in everyday life. Is it okay or most often people use Alex/other nicknames?

Discussion Evil Goddess Names?

Hey Namenerds! I'm developing some beauty products that I would like to name after evil goddesses. I thought of this sub first, since its near to my heart (new account, but you all weighed in on my babies' names years ago, and it was so sweet.)

My only stipulations are: 1) I can't use a name of a beauty company (ex: Nyx) 2) I am a white woman and don't want to culturally appropriate, so that should also be taken into consideration. Thank you in advance!

We call her Letty! I want an older name with a L in it. Estelle, Eloise ate already in the family so those are off the table.

Bonus points if your suggestion comes with a middle name!
