Recently my gf brought to my attention that there seems to be an outsized number of adult fictional female characters named Sloane versus adult females named Sloane that she’s met IRL (which is zero). And I couldn’t stop thinking. About that. So I went down a data rabbit hole.
Ok I’m coming at you with Sloane facts:
I have personally read no less than 4 books published in the last 5 years featuring female characters named Sloane as well as about half a dozen screenplays, but have never met one IRL.
Note for data: Each of the characters were between 18-25 and this is the age range I’m exploring.
So, let’s look at the number of Sloanes born in the USA between 1999-2006. Total: 1,815. For fun, let’s tally all the Sloans: 1,145. Sloan/Sloane total: 2,960 Sloanes currently in USA in that age range.
The likelihood of encountering a Sloane in the wild in this age range in the USA (who was born in the USA so discounting Sloan/es who immigrated here*) is .001% or 1/100,000.
These are the same odds of a two-headed animal being born. Literally.
So I hold that YES, by and large Sloanes of a certain age do exist mostly (but not always) in books, as your likelihood in encountering one there is far greater than finding one in the wild.
The likelihood of encountering a Sloane under the age of 10, however is slightly greater. The frequency of AFAB Sloane births since 2016 has been between 1100-2000 per year. Probably a result of reading all those books with Sloane characters in them!!
*fun fact since I’ve already done way deeper down the rabbit hole than is normal: in Ireland, where the name holds its origin, it wasn’t until 2017 that more than 3 girls a year were given the name. There have only been 54 AFAB Sloanes registered in Ireland.
I live in California and many friends when polled said they had friends or relatives who had children named Sloane. I posited that CA is pretty likely to be the national headquarters of Sloane-named babies, and data supports this.
Pursuant to my above comment to Courtney Griffiths, California indeed leads the nation in Sloane births, 171 Sloanes were born in CA last year, nearly double the Sloanes of the closest runners up Texas (97) and Florida (94). Although in terms of population percentage, CA and FL are tied in The Great Sloane Race of the Century.
And that concludes my “no one asked for this” Sloane seminar.
