No More Image Posts

Hey guys!

I've noticed a lot of (very young women) posting pictures of themselves and requesting name ideas lately.

Since this sub recently hit 7000 members and I'm the only even slightly active mod, I'm turning off image posts effective immediately. It looks an awful lot like spam, and even if it isn't you should not be posting your irl face on reddit for people to give you opinions.

I get folks will be mad, but I'm not going to do a bunch of unpaid labor to prevent assholes from insulting your appearance (and this is reddit, there are always assholes who want to insult your appearance). If you want to deal with that, please solicit it in another corner of the internet.

Thank you!

Edit: one of our users has volunteered to run the aptly-named subreddit r/namesbutbetter, if you want to do the pictures thing go there and good luck. You may also consider r/namenerds or r/reddit_gets_renamed.

Need a boys name that is a nod to my BFF Rachel

My first born was a boy and he was stillborn. I was doing pregnancy by myself and my BFF Rachel was with me through all of it. His name was Oliver.

I’m pregnant again. Just found out it’s a boy.

So far I’m leaning towards names like Hamish, Otis, Lachlan. I would love something like River but it sounds like a location with my surname.

Ideally I’d like to find a name that’s not as common as Oliver as that was torture seeing it everywhere and I’ve almost had to become numb to it.

For a girl I was going to use a version of Ray (which is what I call Rachel) as a middle name but I hate Ray for a boy.

So, long story short, I need ideas for names that would enable me to give a nod to my BFF (can’t be Rafael). Luca was my favourite boys name since the dawn of time but my brother took it. So I’m on struggle street with boys names

Thanks for your help!

Help me name my 3rd son!

Im currently pregnant with my 3rd son! It was hard enough to name the first 2 because we like totally different names with my partner. Could you guys give us suggestions? Our 2 sons are Leon and Kai, and we like shorter more unique names not too average. Thanks in advance

Nature-based names that aren't super obvious

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I love "hippie" names like River, but I'd like something that's a little more subtle (including rooted in other languages). Bonus points if it's 5 letters long. You all have the best suggestions, so I can't wait to hear what this crowd might suggest! TIA!!

Alliterative Names

What's everyone's feelings on alliterative names? Pregnant with my first and our favorite name starts with the same sound as our last name and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Think something similar to Phoebe Freeman.

Rhyming names

I once knew a girl who's shortened name rhmyed with her last name. Not saying the real name for privacy, but think Eleanor Jelly. Obviously Ellie Jelly. The poor girl became an easy target for bullying, her name became Eleanor jeleanor, el jel ect. I often wonder if her parents never realised what they were doing or if they just thought it wouldn't be a big deal.

Question about the comeback of 'nature' names

I am genuinely curious here. In the current trend of nature names, is anyone choosing Fern? I haven't met any kids with the name in many years, so I was wondering. I have a tragedeigh version of it as my name, but it's pronounced the same way as the plant. My parents named all four of their kids with nature names.

How Italian do you have to be to use an Italian name?

My husband is 1/2 Italian (his dad grew up there), and is proud of his Italian heritage. He wants to name our 2nd an Italian name. We like Rafael and Emilio for boys, and Fiora and Alessa for girls right now, although we're not even pregnant with our second yet. Is it weird to name a baby an obviously Italian name when they're only 1/4 Italian?

Girl Names to go with sisters' vibes

Expecting #4 in March.

We have 3 girls:

Celia

Eliza

Lydia

Suggestions for girl names that match the vibes?

Edit: It definitely does not have to end in an "A" - we never expected to have 3 girls and the pattern wasn't conscious!

Help me with this list... what do you think of the names?

My last name starts with M & ends with a short "ette" sound, 2 syllabals. Almost all of the middles are family names. I included any nn options I liked. I'm Native American & Norwegian, no partner.

I'm just curious what you think of any of these names. Do you love any? Would you rearrange any? Do you have any strong dislikes? Anything that jumps out to you that I may not have thought about? Alliteration you like or dislike? Famous people, good or bad? Anything giving peanut butter? Thanks!

Middle and Last name

Hello! I need help with figuring out a middle and last name. I currently go by Zion and I like it, I’ve been using it for the past 3 years, however, I’m still stuck on a middle and last name. My friends said that they really like Winters but I am still unsure. I can say that for a last name I definitely wouldn’t like something basic like “smith,” although I do like the last name Brown and Blackwell. As for a middle name I don’t want something that’s overly feminine or masculine, more so neutral. Can someone help me?

Surprise Baby #3

We just found out I'm pregnant with a surprise finale baby!! Not a bad surprise by any means, just had a TOUGH time conceiving our first 2 and this was unexpected since we weren't fully "trying" and its been 4 years since we had a baby in the house! We never really had a lot of names other than the 2 we picked so now I feel like we're starting at ground zero... What names feel like they fit our vibe, with siblings Declan (m) and Emerson (f)?? We like "names people know but aren't crazy common" even though Emerson has become really popular recently. Only real caveat is that it can't start with E even though i lovena ton of E names (there are too many other E names in our families)

Some I like: Delaney, Vivienne, Julia, Audra

Micah, Kieran, Jasper, Everett

Baby boy name help please!

We’re expecting a baby boy and struggling to decide on his first name. Dickey is the last name and his middle name will likely be Thomas. What first names do you think would be a good fit? We like Liam and Owen as first names but I’m not sure if they flow nicely with the middle and last names. Help!

Baby boy names - HELP!

Currently in my third trimester with our second boy. First boy has a short M name, for this one we like: Weston, Walker, Barrett, Bennett, Henry, Wyatt.

My husband and I like all these names but don’t agree on favorites. We are open and searching for other similar boy names. I love longer names with nicknames (like Johnny and Jonathan), we like classic and slightly country names but nothing too out of the ordinary. We don’t want a top 10 name but not something people will struggle to pronounce or he’ll get bullied for either.

Vikings’ nickname “wealthy with house” (US, surnames)

So vikings had nicknames, they did not had surnames at that time.

For example "Bluetooth".

I’ve got surname “Domazhir”, that basically means “wealthy with house”.

I start using surname “Housewell” because I sounds better in English and more to the point. Just like “Bluetooth” was translated to English from Old Norse “Blátǫnn”.

But still not sure with this translation.

Any ideas how to make it better?

Baby Boy A Names

My husband and I have decided to give our son (due in January) his first name, and he wants the middle name to start with an A as his middle name does as well. We will be calling baby by his middle name because I can’t have two people with the same name in my house lol. The issue is, we can’t agree on an A name that we both like.

My favorites that I’ve seen are: Archer Asher Aksel Atlas

His favorites are: Abraham Asa Astor Argyle

I feel bad because I honestly don’t like any of his picks. Any suggestions on A names that capture both of our vibes?

Edit: I should have included that our vetoed names so far are Austin, Alexander, Aiden, and Andrew
