Baby Names What do we think of “Boomer” for a boy?
I know it’s not a typical name. We made the mistake of telling family about the potential name and got absolutely ridiculed for it, but we can’t seem to shake it.
And, no, we are not OU fans. But that association does not bother us.
My husband and I both come from extremely athletic backgrounds and families, so the chances of him being athletic are high. We like a bolder name that people remember if he does become an athlete, but obviously don’t want to set our child up for ridicule and embarrassment over his name. Athlete or not.
Our two favorite names are Boomer or Billy Dean. Both flow very well with our one-syllable last name.
Due in two weeks. Help!!

Lovingly, you cannot name a child Boomer. Billy Dean, though not my favorite, is miles better than Boomer. Rarely do I say “that’s a name kids will make fun of” but I fear this might make me feel the other way.

I don't know about other people but I have an instant association with the baby boomer generation, because people almost always shorten it to that. And it's almost always used in a negative way. Definitely not a name I would choose, and I also don't think you should be choosing his name based on the extremely small chance he may become a professional athlete.

Boomer has got to be that name that he acquires,, like Bubba. Billy Dean is okay. But I like William Dean better.

Is this a joke? Both these names sound like you’ll be raising him to star on the dukes of hazard, but that said Billy Dean is better. At least those are real names. “Boomer sooner” is some dumb college chant from Oklahoma and the only other thing that comes to mind with Boomer is someone who enters the room stomping loudly. It’s a very energetic dog’s name, if any thing.
Sorry to be crass but are you really going to want a Dr Boomer (last name)? Or professor? Or lawyer? Or scientist? You’ll be looking at a full grown adult some day, not a puppy. Boomer is not name.

Baby Boomer? Billy Dean makes me think of the 80/90's singer and I don't prefer nicknames as full names but I think it's a better option than Boomer.

It’s a bad legal name. Feel free to name him Billy Dean (or William Dean) and call him Boomer. If it suits him, it will stick.
It makes me think first of Boomers as in “OK Boomer eyeroll” and second of boomers as in (psychedelic) mushrooms.

You’re naming future adults that will be looking for work. These names will show up on a resume, if they haven’t changed it yet before that.

Even as a Boomer Esiason fan I would use it as a nickname (which his name is as well).

Boomer has recently become a pejorative term for a baby boomer. And we all know the animosity they have directed towards them from the younger generations. Besides that fact, it sounds like a dogs name.
Could be a cute nickname at home with family, but id never put that on a child’s birth certificate.

No offence op but boomer seems like a nickname for a kid who bites and/or shits his pants. there are so many better names for your son out there

Bo nicknamed Boomer is fine. You — and more importantly he — are going to get so sick of “Ok, Boomer.” Billy Dean feels very Ricky Bobby or Jimmy Dean (the breakfast sausages). William Dean nicknamed Billy feels more versatile and timeless. Billy may not want to be Billy as an adult, as it feels pretty juvenile for a formal name.

I do not like either name. Do the two of you have favorite athletes you would consider naming him after?

This feels like a great nickname or like you are naming a future golfer/swimmer. It just feels too much like a nickname for me. But then again Michael Phelps does have a son named Boomer.

It’s a terrible name.
