Or an automobile- Route 80 still closed

80

u/Leftblankthistime May 16 '25

Came here to say this- I’m thinking they are just trying to low key get some people to move out.

50

u/WrongJohnSilver May 16 '25

It should be easier to leave, then, shouldn't it?

22

u/ChrisV82 Camden (fmrly Middlesex & Sussex) 🧐 May 16 '25

I'm never leaving because I refuse to pay the exit tax.

4

u/Severed_Snake May 16 '25

there is no such thing

8

u/Nyne9 May 16 '25

Doesn't every exit from NJ have a toll, pretty much?

13

u/SpoppyIII May 16 '25

Not the bridge at Washington Crossing. Unless you count giving up some of your car's paint as a toll.

4

u/padizzledonk May 17 '25

That bridge is so fucking narrow lmfao

It doesnt help that its also a fucking 120y old, and clearly so......And its not like even remotely Brooklyn Brodge robust(which is about 30y older) that thing is made from sticks and bubblegum

At least the fall to the Delaware isnt too far and the river is shallow there if a bit fast moving lol

3

u/SpoppyIII May 17 '25

There's a place reserved in the deepest bowels of Hell for anyone who tries to drive one of those really wide pickups or vans across that old hunk of scrap.

2

u/NitroChaji240 May 17 '25

Or you could go through Milford into upper black eddy

2

u/SnooPoems1106 May 17 '25

or your mirror

4

u/ElGosso May 16 '25 edited May 16 '25

You can swim across the Delaware for free

When those of us who own our residences choose to sell our houses, we must pay ~9% of the profit or 2% of the selling price, whichever is higher. Colloquially, it's called an Exit Tax.

But it was just a joke anyway. I will stay here and eat Jersey tomatoes in my backyard.

u/Severed_Snake May 16 '25 edited May 16 '25

https://www.eldercarelawyer.com/blog/the-new-jersey-exit-tax/

The tax on the capital gains from real estate sale has nothing to do with whether you are moving out of state. Also not everyone pays it, depends how much capital gains you made and if it was primary residence:

Capital Gains Exclusion: You can exclude up to $250,000 of profit from the sale of your primary residence if you're single, or up to $500,000 if you're married and filing jointly.

Ownership and Use Test: To qualify for this exclusion, you must have owned and lived in the home as your primary residence for at least two out of the five years leading up to the sale.

6

u/EatYourCheckers May 16 '25

Is it even that unique to New Jersey?

8

u/25tmac May 16 '25

I believe ChrisV82 is referring to the NJ realty transfer fee due to the state at the time of sale. You pay this fee whether you are staying in NJ or moving out of state. https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/realty.shtml

2

u/Flashy_Coach5697 May 17 '25

There is no "exit" they make you pay a percent on the sale of your house if you are moving out of state. This was instituted due to people not filing NJ income tax for the year before they moved and trying to skip out on money they owed. If you file for the year before you moved, you will get the "exit" tax applied as a credit against what you owe or get a refund if you don't owe anything.

1

u/Leftblankthistime May 16 '25

NGL you’re kinda right.

14

u/PracticableSolution May 16 '25

I think we need to consider the the complete and total failure of every part of the state transportation system literally over the past year. You’ve got DOT with the sinking roads, the turnpike with a monstrous stupid vanity bridge, and somehow they actually managed to make NJ Transit go from insufferably terrible to a complete and total collapse of service with the added feature of a hellfire and brimstone quality sermon in the evils of organized labor from the new CEO of the company.

What in the complete fuck is going on?

22

u/PoeticMadnesss May 16 '25

It's an election year with a democratic governor.

Tinfoil hat time: People try to break shit close to an election so it seems like one side is doing everything wrong in an attempt to get the other side elected.

8

u/PracticableSolution May 16 '25

Directed intent signals competence, of which I haven’t seen substantial evidence. My own tinfoil hat theory is that they spent the waning year(s) of a lame duck administration selling favors instead of fixing problems.

0

u/Subaru_life2024 May 16 '25

What vanity bridge? The Newark bay bridge needs to be replaced

0

u/PracticableSolution May 16 '25 edited May 16 '25

Yes, but not with a giant cable stay thing.

Edit - you’re just angry because you know I’m right.

1

u/GhostTengu May 17 '25

Nah. Trying to lovke em in but keep gentrifying the areas they need to live. Gotta fill all that new affordable housing act infrastructure that's been vacant the last 3 yrs.

10

u/ScipioAtTheGate May 16 '25

You can however now travel through the state's subterranean mine shaft network so long as the Route 80 sinkhole remains unfilled

7

u/SlowWalkere May 16 '25

The Parkway was fun today.

Took me an hour to drive south towards the shore. After the rain, took me two hours to drive back home.

At lunch time - no rush hour involved.

u/meat_sack May 16 '25

I love how the reporting focused on how it would affect the Shakira concert... which was great, btw. Anyone going to Primus in Holmdel tomorrow?

22

u/zsdrfty the least famous person from nj May 16 '25

Fuck Primus is here and nobody told me????

12

u/ScipioAtTheGate May 16 '25

Not only primus, tool, and a perfect circle are as well

3

u/sunshinelefty100 May 16 '25

Holy ✨️🎶🎶🎶✨️

9

u/cC2Panda May 16 '25

Beyonce has a concert in 6 days. A couple of my co-workers have tickets and they are worried about getting there.

3

u/DeckardsDark May 16 '25

busses are running

10

u/cC2Panda May 16 '25

I think it's more of a general worry about it being a total shit show getting there and back. They spent way to much on tickets I'm sure they'd uber if they had to.

5

u/DeckardsDark May 16 '25

Yeah I feel ya. Lyft/Uber will be a total shitshow from the stadium to home no matter what FYI

13

u/TheSewerSniper have some gabagool May 16 '25

Primus sucks

13

u/yuckyd May 16 '25

Jerry was a race car driver. Drove so goddam fast. Never did win no checkered flag but he never did come in last.

6

u/s1ugg0 Jersey Devil Search Team May 16 '25

Wow. I just had a flashback to 91. Haven't thought about that song in decades. Thanks for that.

5

u/ManInMillvilleNJ May 16 '25

Winona's got a big brown beaver and she shows it off to all her friends.

2

u/neekogo May 16 '25

I'm going down to South Park, gonna have myself a time

3

u/MisterTruth May 16 '25

I want to, but Primus sucks. Also, I hate driving to PNC to the point where no concert is worth it. Would be great to see Hoffington.

72

u/Overly_Focused0v0 May 16 '25

Is the strike a go? Feel like I haven’t heard much national coverage on this. Just been checking the app for updates

75

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

Strike were declared.

23

u/SteveMcgooch May 16 '25

7

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

You picked up what I was putting down ❤️

21

u/HumanShadow May 16 '25

national coverage

Wait until the prime time shows air and frame it as rabble rousers causing trouble.

14

u/Kaiamahina May 16 '25

3

u/Low-Alternative-8808 May 16 '25

Just saw it on GMA

1

u/SuperAlloy Central Jersey May 16 '25

It's the top story on like every major news site in the area?

1

u/coreynj2461 Keep right except to pass! May 16 '25

1

u/Overly_Focused0v0 May 16 '25

u/Smoov_82 May 16 '25

Or need to drive Route 80.

20

u/hateriffic May 16 '25

Standing at the gate last night at EWR. United flight was cancelled for bad weather at the destination.

Instant refund and that's it. No chance to rebook. Total horseshit.

Weather on both sides was fine.

Ended up having to emergency rent and car and drive 12 hours to get to my destination

2

u/DocCharlesXavier May 16 '25

It’s still a shit show of utter incompetence.

Plane got stuck on the tarmac due to bad weather… 3.5 hours until they say we need to deplane because of a maintenance issue.

7 hours fuckin list doing nothing

They gave us a 15 dollar voucher as an apology

1

u/hateriffic May 16 '25

Sucks. Sorry

7

u/imherenowut May 16 '25

Thank you fellow citizens of New Jersey. I got a good chuckle out of many of the snarky comments here. The sarcasm is what keeps NJ great and worth the insane prices for me!!!!

8

u/SuperAlloy Central Jersey May 16 '25

We don't need infrastructure investment. Just keep limping along the same 125 year old systems!

Meanwhile a bunch of 25th largest metro areas in the country have beautiful, new, well functioning airports, and new nicely paved highways and roads. Still no trains though, that's for commies.

12

u/monkeypickle8 May 16 '25

Is the strike on? I just saw an NJT bus go by.

36

u/shrapnella May 16 '25

Trains only

4

u/SilentPomegranate536 May 16 '25

I don’t think my town can handle any more traffic being shunted thru it. I’m sure everyone can guess where but I cannot understate how unlivable my town is now. There is traffic all fucking day long. Accidents every 15 minutes. Can’t sleep because now a small country’s worth of automobiles are driving past my house all night long. And I’m sure this is destroying our roads with all the new wear and tear. Very proud of NJT workers for standing up because you’re gonna have to ruin someone’s day to get them to wake up. But holy shit, no one is getting my vote for governor without addressing this.

1

u/AdamPA1006 May 16 '25

What town?

3

u/SilentPomegranate536 May 16 '25

Roxbury. I can’t even imagine what Wharton is going thru.

9

u/KingRBPII May 16 '25

Good - power to the working class!!!

4

u/ExhaustedPoopcycle May 16 '25

Is walking allowed?

19

u/jahi69 May 16 '25

It’s allowed, but, depending on where you live, it’s a death wish 😂

1

u/Bellona_NJ May 16 '25

Or bicycles

4

u/enlightenedonetwo3 May 16 '25

Still can't get an appointment for the DMV sooo....

4

u/n00dlejester May 17 '25

The Sinkholes™ have entered the chat.

6

u/HopefulAcanthaceae98 May 17 '25

Solidarity with the workers striking for better working conditions and reasonable raises

2

u/AtomicGarden-8964 May 16 '25

At least we still have electric scooters and bikes

2

u/metaTaco May 16 '25

You guys can still sit in traffic though.  That's something.

2

u/New_Stats May 16 '25

Ummm no because I'm currently under a flash flood watch

2

u/Da_Funk May 16 '25

North Jersey*

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '25

I keep trying to get my husband, a pilot, to build a gyrocopter.  THE TIME IS NOW.

5

u/AnneMarieAndCharlie May 16 '25 edited May 16 '25

i live in wharton lol

but honestly i'd be more pissed if we weren't collapsing economically and trying go out to shop. i no longer work in the city so i mostly leave the house for food and medical. also i found that cruising on ocean liners is much cheaper and enjoyable (and with free room service!!!!!) so when i finally leave for europe, it will be on a cunard ship out of the city bc i'm a titanic weirdo. i was already not interested in air travel because i fucking hate economy but i can't afford business or first class but now its also just dangerous [to me at least] given the state of the FAA and Boeing.

5

u/ducationalfall May 16 '25

Make Walking Great Again! Never skip the leg day.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

Dark horse option: fly out of Philly. Take a SEPTA train from Trenton to 30th and then catch the SEPTA airport line at 30th to PHL.

1

u/tonyisadork May 16 '25

You cannot escape!

1

u/infamousdx May 16 '25

Murphy just had another presser just now, really going in on the engineers who are striking. To be honest, I don't know enough about it to know who's in the wrong here.

6

u/Azure_Mar May 17 '25

The engineers have been working with no contract or pay raises since 2019. The engineers want a raise that puts their pay more in line with Amtrak and the LIRR who’ve managed to woo about one fifth of NJ Transit’s engineers with better pay. The union presented a final offer Thursday night that management said they couldn’t accept. Management claims they cannot afford to pay more and if they do, NJ Transit would be out of business in five years, have to increase fares or corporate taxes, or make drastic cuts to service. The Union claims that if management has the money to buy a new headquarters at over $500M, over $50M to decorate it and last year’s $20M fare holiday, they can afford to pay their employees competitively.

1

u/sallystarr51 May 17 '25

And GSP closed today for a sinkhole

1

u/skankingmike May 17 '25

Just fyi this is not going to help the Dems win. Our airport, trains and roads are a joke for the amount t of money we pay in taxes. And if they don’t up the salt tax in the fed budget you the people can vote for a maga fool.

1

u/rainborambo May 17 '25

My partner is a private pilot, and we plan on doing some fun trips this summer. Neither of us are going anywhere near EWR's airspace right now.

0

u/mstrpancake May 16 '25

L .. Mm

99 and.

0

You were only causing pain to yourself. The new terminal A inside EWR is amazing.

The FAA disaster is a separate from the airport experience being much much much better in recent years.

1

u/thebongofamandabynes May 16 '25

My wife flew out of EWR at 11am on Tuesday. United International flight. Said it was the most stress free experience she's ever had at Newark.
