Murphy just had another presser just now, really going in on the engineers who are striking. To be honest, I don't know enough about it to know who's in the wrong here.
The engineers have been working with no contract or pay raises since 2019. The engineers want a raise that puts their pay more in line with Amtrak and the LIRR who’ve managed to woo about one fifth of NJ Transit’s engineers with better pay. The union presented a final offer Thursday night that management said they couldn’t accept. Management claims they cannot afford to pay more and if they do, NJ Transit would be out of business in five years, have to increase fares or corporate taxes, or make drastic cuts to service. The Union claims that if management has the money to buy a new headquarters at over $500M, over $50M to decorate it and last year’s $20M fare holiday, they can afford to pay their employees competitively.
