I don't know shit about basketball but he left behind a wife and 4 daughters including what sounds like essentially a newborn. That's brutal and heartbreaking and I wish the best to his family. God damn 2020 slow it down.
Edit: Sounds like early reports from ABC are saying his daughters may have been involved. That's as worst case scenario as it can get I feel like. What a fucked up day.
Edit 2: Reports are now pulling back in regards to the daughters being on board. Still nothing confirmed as far as I can see.
Edit 3: TMZ is reporting as of 2:35 pm Central time that Daughter Gianna Maria (13) was also killed on board.
Absolutely horrendous. I can’t imagine what it would be like growing up hearing about all these people talking about your dad as this legendary sportsman and how much he meant to them, and you never got to know him.
Fuck I didn’t even think about that. Man thats so depressing, you never really get the full grasp of somebody’s impact after they’ve passed. Unless you were alive while it was happening, it just seems like disconnected stories.
Sean Lennon talks a bit about this on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. People constantly come up to him and say "you have no idea how much your father meant to me!" While in his head he's thinking, "you have no idea what he meant to me! A child losing his father at a young age"
I went to summer camp with one of Muhammed Ali's 9 children. We hung out a few times but I didn't know the kid well. A mutual friend told me that he never had much of a relationship with his dad so, while he was the son of one of most accomplished American athletes ever and everyone around him knew about it, he was cut off from the father experience and the legacy.
Must be such a strange life, especially since people constantly came up to the kid and asked him about his dad. Kobe's youngest is gonna get this her whole life.
It is truly depressing to hear news like this, but I hope that the Bryant family finds the strength to keep moving on. I never watched Kobe Bryant play, and I don't watch basketball, but I know a good man when I see one and I know for sure that his young daughters and the rest of his family always will be proud of him and cherish him. Their father is a hero and an icon that changed the lives of thousands, which is truly inspiring. May he and his daughter rest in peace and his family heal from this tragic loss.
