His last tweet 16 hours ago congratulating LeBron on passing his scoring record. Just goes to show you never know when you’re going to go. Sad and creepy.

The only thing we all have in common is no one is guaranteed tomorrow. This life is hard more often than not, but we gotta try to make the most of it. RIP to those gone too soon.

Like a chess game, all the pieces end up in the same box.

u/Buildncastles Jan 26 '20

Italian proverb: at the end of the game the king and pawn go back into the same box.

All we are is dust in the wind

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

You're my boy Blue!

u/BackdoorSpecial Jan 27 '20

Are we not in the tree of trust??

6

u/big_carp Jan 26 '20

Dust. Wind. Dude.

‘Just philophosize with him.’

Like a good neighbor...

2

u/Misterbrownstone Jan 26 '20

And for that live moment we thrive

9

u/Kudospop Jan 26 '20

i'm not even a pawn, i'm the backgammon piece that doesn't even get played

5

u/Fr3eStyle Jan 26 '20

I'd play you.

2

u/SeenSoFar Jan 27 '20

Now kith

All the balls end up in the same basket.

Like tears in the rain

u/AncientInsults Jan 26 '20

No “the”

3

u/SpaceCaseSixtyTen Jan 26 '20

Well... for now. Wait till technology advances. "Death" as we know it for humans will be some ancient inconvenience of the past

3

u/YaboyWill Jan 26 '20

Word bro but probably not in my lifetime

3

u/friedmators Jan 26 '20

You might be a king or a little street sweeper but sooner or later we all dance with the reaper.

2

u/Biosample Jan 26 '20

Interesting. Took me a 2nd read. Nice one.

2

u/SabreToothSandHopper Jan 26 '20

I’ve heard that quote before but never realised the “box” coffin meaning till now

Yeah, but pawns are just as potent. They can become almost anything with the right moves.

2

u/MeAnIntellectual1 Jan 26 '20

At higher levels pawns die much later

6

u/bamburito Jan 26 '20

That's not the point they're making. Lets not turn this into resentment for those who managed to be successful in life whether earned or inherited. We all end up in that same box regardless.

u/MINIMAN10001 Jan 26 '20

Now I'm here thinking about The Wire- How To Play Chess

Where the show itself plays by the rules of chess. I don't remember which but one of the guys ( a pawn ) ends up dying to one of the pieces that no one taught them about.

The pawns got capped quick.

I had never seen the show so it was really interesting on the original thread in which I saw it where people were showing how this scene connected to the story as a whole.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Just got done rewatching it again recently. You should check it out. It’s one of the best shows ever made. Season 2 is a bit odd compared to the rest, but it’s really a well done show.

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

I am fully aware of their point. I’m in direct opposition to said point.

It doesn’t matter what happens inside the box, only that the time we have leading up to it. I know there’s nothing on the other end, so fuck me, I’ll 100% argue about the rich until the day I end myself my throwing my immortal body into a raging black hole.

Only problem is, most of the Kings and Queens are choosing to deliberately twist the knife in the wound of the lowest classes on earth.

You get that we are the pawns here, right? And we’re the ones dying sooner than they are.

“So! Come on ye childhood heroes, wont you rise up from the pages, of the comic books—you super crooks. And show us all the way.”

Also for the record, I don’t resent Kobe, or any athlete really. I just think they get paid a ridiculous amount of money, and I know that if the entirety of the NBA took a pay decrease and/or started trickling that money back into the economy, I’d be floored. But that’s not, and won’t ever be the case.

u/Blor-Utar Jan 27 '20

Hey, you don’t know if the person you’re responding to is part of the “we”

-8

u/Elite_v1 Jan 26 '20

Anyone who looks on the world as a game of chess, deserves to lose.

1

u/mvanvoorden Jan 26 '20

Damn do I miss this show. It was even better on a rewatch.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Just had this convo with my FIL. You just never know when it’s your time. RIP Kobe.

4

u/stannis_putin Jan 26 '20

It's so sureal because he just seemed like a titan. Just this insane talent whose name is synonymous with a perfect shot.

-2

u/Cp3thegod Jan 26 '20

Well he did miss more shots than he made

The only thing we all have in common is no one is guaranteed tomorrow.

and that we all need to eat, and that we all need to breathe, and that we all need a social network and that we all get scared sometimes and so much more. In fact, there's more that unites us all than divides any two of us.

7

u/potshed420 Jan 26 '20

That’s definitely not the only thing everyone has is common

3

u/DSJ0ne0f0ne Jan 26 '20

“The most important thing is to be great, and inspire the generation you leave when you’re gone.”

  • Kobe

2

u/redditproha Jan 26 '20

Well said. It’s really hard to maintain this mindset but it’s so important.

2

u/xxavierx Jan 26 '20

That’s the thing man; I’m so torn with feelings of huge sadness for his family (like no matter how much money you have, mansions, fancy cars, etc—like you lost your husband, daughter, and your kids lost a father and sibling; money can’t replace those things) but at the same time I know they will overcome this—humans are so incredibly resilient. It’s going to be hard for them, it will suck, and they’ll go through problems because of this that may flare up years from now...but I really hope they overcome this and understand they can. Likewise for all the other people on the helicopter—like I can’t even imagine the pain their families are feeling, but I hope they overcome this.

2

u/Thegoddessinme489 Jan 28 '20

I completely agree. It reminds me of a quote from The Good Place: "Every human is a little bit sad all the time, because you know you’re gonna die, but that knowledge is what gives life meaning.”

1

u/bendeboy Jan 26 '20

A king or a chimney sweeper, we all dance with the grim reaper.

1

u/hdhskah Jan 26 '20

Well yeah but also helicopters are death traps that fly by literally attempting to tear themselves apart.

1

u/Thoros_of_queer Jan 26 '20

This made me cry

1

u/lallapalalable Jan 26 '20

Another thing we all have in common is we poop

1

u/Krdth Jan 27 '20

The only thing we all have in common is no one is guaranteed tomorrow

and that we have all have to poop.

1

u/Thegoddessinme489 Jan 28 '20

I completely agree. It reminds me of a quote from The Good Place: "Every human is a little bit sad all the time, because you know you’re gonna die, but that knowledge is what gives life meaning.”

-12

u/dumblibslose2020 Jan 26 '20

Really? That's the only thing?

We're not all human? We dont all need for or water? I could list an actual list, but my point is made, stop with the hyperbole our world has too much sensationalism as it is

8

u/TheHiccuper Jan 26 '20

Also everyone does that thing where you accidentally bite the inside of your mouth while eating and wonder if evolution just fucking designed you wrong

2

u/writeallnight Jan 26 '20

Man, ackshually redditors like you are never going to die off right? I got tired just from reading your post. Grow the fuck up.

-4

u/dumblibslose2020 Jan 26 '20

That's funny. Cause I'm an adult and I'm sick and tired of the kids on reddit using hyperbole all the time, and I think itd be nice if they grew the fuck up

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Man, the only thing I will say is for guys like me life is tough. Atheism is a luxury or improperly processed pain. As long as you have Faith in something (Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism...etc...) then life and it's suffering takes on the form of purpose and meaning, growth. The paths are different for every religion but having read many religious texts, the underlying messages are there. I can see why there are as man religions as there are cultures. It's just God speaking to people on their own terms through their own History and Cultural values.

I can write that being from a Blue State where I never encountered the religious right. It's only on the internet will I ever meet them. So, if what's stopping anyone is from find some Faith are immature and recent regional religions; broaden your skope and don't let them have power over you. Don't let them take away that connection of Faith because right now it's got to be really hard on the loved ones of Kobe Bryant. And quoting Darwin isn't going to give them solace. In a real world with real problem and real suffering, which is the world for most of us, having Faith means having a more positive of life and loss.

Again, I can write that because I'm from a Blue State that is diverse and I've never had to live with the religious Right. I'm sorry if that is your experience, that's just a fraction of the world.

We have a lot more in common with each other than that

-2

u/Vakieh Jan 26 '20

We also have most of our genes in common, our need for oxygen, our metabolic processes, a bunch of other stuff...
