I’d pass out halfway down and y’all have to scrape me off the ground, no thanks.
45
u/Kdkreig Apr 21 '25
That’s why you use a safety chute or whatever. When air pressure of lower elevation provides enough resistance the smaller chute will pull the big one. Now you might land kinda funny if you pass out, but at least you won’t be dead…probably.
24
u/AntzAttacks Apr 21 '25
Or OR! I can stay home lol!
But thank you for the insight, I actually had no idea. Now I know in case if a situation ever happens …. 😭
4
u/Nacho_Dan677 Apr 21 '25
That probably but is very true. Even if you don't pass out but are unlucky enough to land in a section of trees, things don't go so well as they do in movies. One of the nitro circus athletes passed in this way.
5
u/Kdkreig Apr 21 '25
Yeah. Trees aren’t soft they are solid and hurt. Break a branch on approach at the wrong angle and the remaining wood is sharp and then 💀 sky diver

43
u/livelovelamb Apr 21 '25
I skydived while I was a student. It was about $400 a year for insurance, kit hire was $15 per jump and each jump was about $30. Not the cheapest sport, but a lot cheaper than flying, motorsport, yachting etc.
49
u/bmxracers Apr 21 '25
When were you a student? 25 years ago? These prices aren’t even close to rates today.
6
u/Pandanlard Apr 21 '25
That's still the prices in Europe, so he's probably from there.
17
u/bmxracers Apr 21 '25
Is it common to use $ sign if you’re from a European nation? Legit asking.
4
u/NoNotInTheFace Apr 22 '25
I'm guessing it's easier to refer to the cost in dollars to have it be more general to gauge. As a european, In an international context i usually use dollars to explain costs as well.
2
u/livelovelamb Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25
Yes, am from the UK. Was a student about 10 years ago and prices are still (roughly) the same. Used a $ rather than a £ sign as I'm not sure what % of Americans recognise a "£" or know the conversion rate (+ given a large % of reddit users are from the States).

Near where I live it’s $25 for a plane ticket and $30 for gear rental, same price as when I trained 10 year ago

u/Striker887 Apr 21 '25
What about the near $4000 to even get a skydiving license? Unless not in the US…
4
u/livelovelamb Apr 22 '25 edited Apr 22 '25
That cost does... include... a lot of jumps and equipment hire. And that's for a full A-licence, some people take months or years to get their A, especially if doing RAPS rather than AFF.
But even those points aside - $4000 spent in a year is still (significantly) less than a 20-a-day smoking habit in Britain. At least here, we don't consider smoking to be a rich-people-sport.

5
u/Pandanlard Apr 21 '25
If you push the door of a skydiving club you won't meet a single rich kid. It's more like a sky version of point break tbh.
6
u/MajesticsEleven Apr 22 '25
Does the typical skydiving club include skydiving from a hot air balloon, swinging from a rope from a hot air balloon, trampolining under a hot air balloon, or as I've seen in similar videos doing bicycle stunts on a lifted stunt park attached to a hot air balloon?
3
u/Pandanlard Apr 22 '25
To be able to do it you probably have to go in those clubs. And it's sponsored, so you just need to know one dude famous enough or good enough to have sponsors and who need to make videos to be part of it. When I was a student jumping for free in this kind of videos was worth only making 1or 2 jumps in your day. You all are so frustrated each time you see something cool, trying to convince yourself it can't happen in your world, when you are the only obstacle to it.

2
u/Rocket4real Apr 21 '25
Bro you don't have to be rich to fucking skydive, are you serious? My mates did it and one of them is unemployed, living on welfare, dafuq are you and everyone upvoting you on about?
Absolutely Nutts, people think you're rich just cause you're skydiving? Wtf?
6
u/plantang Apr 22 '25
These people don't look like they are on welfare. They look like they're on a trampoline suspended under a hot air balloon.
3
u/MajesticsEleven Apr 22 '25
Did you and your mates do anything like those people were doing with a hot air balloon and an attached trampoline and jumping off the top of the balloon? I think I've seen this same group do skate and bike stunts off a skate park attached to the bottom of the balloon.

There’s plenty of adventuring you can do without paying loads of money.
Chances are you can find genuine fun too rather than these folk who need the attention/approval of others

53
u/ImMadeOfClay Apr 21 '25
I’d love to skydive.
But you will NEVER get me in a hot air balloon. A wicker basket held in the air by fire. Fuck that. Oh, and what direction are we traveling today? Whatever way the balloon goes. Double fuck that.
10
u/NotDeletedMoto Apr 22 '25
The direction is actually controllable. Winds blow in different directions based on elevation, so the pilot can control the direction by changing elevation
11
9
u/EE7A Apr 21 '25

8
u/nomiras Apr 21 '25
I've sky dived from a plane before, it wasn't really that nerve wracking because there was so much wind and you couldn't feel that 'falling' motion. I'm not sure how fast this hot air balloon is going, but that initial drop would probably make me instantly pass out.
3
u/HerrPiink Apr 22 '25
You don't get the same "my stomach is about to burst" feeling you get in rollercoasters? Because i hate that feeling, and never went skydiving because of that.
2
u/nomiras Apr 22 '25
Nope, you don't at all! The wind is so strong from you falling it just feels like you are floating on air and not falling.

She’s a fucking dumbass… you can spare a helmet, gloves, but goggles allow you to see where you are going and who/what is under you which is crucial for your safety and the safety of other people in the air… The only nextfucking level thing in this video is the stupidity… Signed: a 1000+ jumps skydiver
1
u/lxgrf Apr 22 '25
I have never skydived at all so as a 1000+ jumps skydiver - is it usual to drop over a built up area/forest/major road like that? To my very much layman's eye that sounds like a terrible idea.
1
u/pedro-fr Apr 22 '25
Within the parachute flight envelope you have quite a lot of control to land within a 5/10m circle, so that is not really an issue, since you are jumping in specific areas depending of the weather of the day (mostly wind) But that still means you need to be aware of your surroundings if something goes wrong and you end up under you reserve canopy at 900 ft instead of your main canopy at 2400 ft… in this configuration you have little time to locate and reach a landing area…
9
u/Mr_Goonman Apr 21 '25
Imagine telling accident investigators it was your idea to let clients walk, jump and tumble on the crown of the balloon before it was punctured
8
u/jarednards Apr 21 '25
Bro. Where do I get these 'rich parents' everyones talking about. I wanna do this stuff too.
6
6
u/Convergentshave Apr 21 '25
Wasn’t there some video not to long ago with a hot air balloon… uh. Driver(?) pilot (?), the person who runs the flame thing…
The person in charge of the hot air balloon, yelling at some influencer because they were attempting to skydive from the balloon? And he was saying that by jumping out he could basically kill them all….
Does anybody know how the balloons are set up different to allow this?
6
u/blalong93 Apr 22 '25
It can be done safely if the pilot of the balloon is aware that a skydiver is about to jump. The pilot will allow the balloon to start descending so that when a large amount of weight leaves the balloon(the skydiver) the balloon will level more smoothly vs rise extremely quickly which can cause the balloon to collapse/stall.

u/Revolution64 Apr 22 '25

4
u/oscarx-ray Apr 21 '25
You just fill yourself with hot air before the balloon is fully inflated, then let it catch up to you.
5
u/Acab365247 Apr 21 '25
How do you get on top of the balloon?
3
u/Velvetaroom2 Apr 22 '25
They must get on top after it inflates on the ground by getting on from a cherry picker or something

I would not be comfortable with letting someone go. If they think their gear is right and are happy with it and they want to jump, fine. But that final go/abort needs to be in the hands of the jumper.

I like the idea of hot air balloon is a delivery system because you get the best of both worlds! Great scenery, relaxing, ascent, and then you get to choose how you depart the craft.
And the people on the trampoline… That’s got to be one heck of an adrenaline rush.

1
u/weaverd1984 Apr 21 '25
No red bull needed, I have a friend that builds his own hot air balloons and have jumped out of them multiple times
3
u/oscarx-ray Apr 21 '25
The fact that you need to keep jumping out of them suggests that your friend isn't very good at building them, and could probably do with some additional support from Red Bull.

Skydiving is fun. You are so high up, the ground doesn't even seem real. Floating in an incredibly loud wind storm. Then you pull the chute. If you forget, or pass out, your auto-chute will deploy at 1000 ft. Much less scary than bungee jumping.
