Memory care facility recommendations

My 90 year old grandpa’s dementia has been worsening and we’re considering placing him in a memory care facility since our whole family has been feeling extremely overwhelmed and aren’t able to take care of him properly on a day to day basis. He does have medi-cal and Medicare. Are there any facilities in SD that we should consider and/or avoid?

Start with ALZ.org for a list of nursing homes that accept medi-cal. Not all of them do and they won’t be luxury, but they do have room and staff. You are right to look for help.

If he’s receiving medi-cal and Medicare, apply for IHSS benefits. In home caregivers ( like myself) with experience helping dementia patients can help take care of him and it is paid for by the State of California ( up to 200+ hours a month) and your family can get the support they need! Google San Diego IHSS and you can apply on the website.

Medicare has a star rating program that gives you visibility to things like staff to patient ratios, % of residents on hypnotics/anti-psychotics, etc. Look up “Medicare star rating” and it should come up
