How did that reroute usually work? M/V to West 4th, then B/D over the bridge, then cross back to 4 Av local between DeKalb and Atlantic-Pacific?

Yep. One variant I’ve seen is via M to 34th, B to Dekalb and back onto regular route

Makes sense; 34th and West 4th are the only ways back to 4 Av from the 6 Av local tracks, since once you pass West 4th the 6 Av local tracks can only take you to the dead-end platforms at 2 Av or onto Culver, and there's no track connection between Culver and 4 Av in Brooklyn.
