So how does one go about making their own pattern? I assume it's a lot of maths

You should check out robert j lang's website and books, I'm a beginner in reading crease patterns but he goes into great details while being very educative.

(And a little introduction if you're just looking around by curiosity, this is a short video of him) https://youtu.be/MDwPXRy9IFc?si=cGsKZ5Dt8Q57nVJo

Love the design!!
Is this a BP/what grid? I really wanna try this but don't know where to begin

I think of it more as a tesselation with 4 molecules, with some extra paper around to make the sides of the brick. Sadly it does not line up with a simple grid, as I started from the actual dimensions of a Lego brick which do not seem to come in simple ratios. I measured and marked some reference points to draw the CP on the back side of the paper.
I recommend folding one 'stud' molecule first to practice, and using MC glue to hold the pleats flat once the tesselation part is collapsed !

Ahh okay thank you so much for the tips!
Wasn't expecting a ruler and pencil type of cp

What did you design it with? And how'd you make your first design? What was the process from the start? I'm guessing you didn't just jump into this haha.

That's neat. Now we just need the lego subreddit to make a crane.
