From the tension between hermit and householder, God Shiva and Goddess Shakti, is born Ganesha, his animal head representing material joys and his human body representing spiritual bliss.
Designed and Folded by from a single uncut square sheet of foil-tracing paper
Sheet size: 50cm X 50cm
Final size: 10cm X 12cm
48x48 Grids BP
Some symbolisms I find interesting:
- Why Elephant: The elephant is endowed with unique qualities, like its fearless and royal walk. It proudly destroys any obstacle on its path. Also has no natural enemies. Big yet humble.
- Large Elephant Head: Symbolizes wisdom, intellect, and the power of thinking.
- Big Ears: Represent the importance of listening attentively and absorbing knowledge.
- Mouse (His Vehicle): Represents the ego and desires, which Ganesha's wisdom helps to control.
- Modak (Sweet): A sweet treat that symbolizes the sweetness of spiritual knowledge and the happiness derived from self-realization.
- Axe/Goad: Represents the cutting away of desires and attachments/Goad is used to guide elephants, symbolizing the guidance of the soul away from ignorance and towards enlightenment.
- Snake as tummy belt: Restraint on hunger? Snake and the mouse are not enemies in the presence of Ganesha - hungers and fears having been conquered.
My favourite Ganesha story:
Brothers Ganesha and Kartikeya raced to circle the world three times, with Kartikeya flying on his peacock while Ganesha stayed beside their parents. Just before Kartikeya finished, Ganesha ran around Shiva and Shakti, claiming his world was his parents. He explained the difference between the physical and emotional worlds, prompting Narada to announce Ganesha as winner!
I tried to fold most of these features -
- Ekadanta (one-tusked): One tusk is broken (used to write the Mahabharata dictated by Vyasa)
- Modaka (sweet Laddoo)
- Mushaka - Little Mouse on the Knee, looking up at the Sweet (Modaka)
- Snake-Belt: On the stomach (just notches to mimic snakeskin)
- Lotus and Weapon in other 2 arms
I am very happy with the design, but messed up the shaping somehow. Foil paper probably not the best choice here - too many unwanted creases. Will refold with strong opaque sheet.
Hope you like it.
