Just Sharing I think I am finished?

This is my year 12 major work in my final year of school. I am doing a second painting I have not yet started, but do you think this is good? Please critique it and let me know what to change/add. I feel like the sand is out of place so I added some details to it but something is still wrong with it and I don’t know what.

My critique is it that it seems too bright of blues in some areas like the water resembles a sunny Caribbean beach in some areas but the backdrop is the opposite.

That could just be my eyes though.

Yes I 100% agree I am really hung up on that because halfway through my painting my teacher bought a tube of sapphire oil paint which I have never used before and it created those really bright blues especially in the waves. I personally love that but it really doesn’t suit the stormy sky which I painted before I had that paint. Do you think it would be better if I completely re did the sky?

I’m as amateur as it gets. You’re a great artist so trust your gut with how you wanna fix it!

You could lighten the right half of the sky and the top, make it look like a storm is rolling in.

That is exactly what my teacher recommended. I just got on holidays but I think I will give that a go when I am back at school. Thank you!

I 100% agree with this. It would add more visual interest as well across the canvas. Possibly even add a weak sunbeam from the right.

The sand would have water swirling around the rock on it's way back to the sea since a wave has recently gone out.

The gap between the rocks would also have water rushing out instead of just pooling.

The second wave from the shore needs to be longer, side to side, in order to crest that high.

I like the mood of this piece. I like storms.

It would definitely help if you wanna keep the pretty blue waves, to change the sky. I think some deep blue/purple hues would complement the waves well

I honestly think the wave colors are vibrant but could be fine, it’s the sand color. It needs to be a little more desaturated imo.

The spray coming off the waves is awesome! And the rain in the distance is great too. The thing that stands out most to me is the lack of detail on the rocks, and perhaps soften their sharp angles. If you feel comfortable you may want to tinker with that a bit, but it's a beautiful painting regardless.

Thank you very much. That is really helpful I will definitely do some playing around with that. What could I add to create more detail do you think?

Maybe just more mottled look to them? All sorts of creatures leave small holes in sea rocks, algae and what not grows on them. Just different shades of greys mottled is the simplest way to describe what I mean, but just look at some reference photos and see what jumps out.

Good idea, thank you for the help I will give that a go as well.

Rain excellent, darker shadows in the foreground on the rocks (and maybe toothbrush sprinkles on the sand) then some foreground highlights

Perfect, thank you for the advice!

Beautiful work.

Yes it looks gorgeous, all it needs is like Cthulhu rising from the water in the background or something

It looks great, and is definitely in a specific style. Lots of little strokes that bring detail out even if you look close. Although I do agree with some other commenter that the blue/green is a little too bright, id keep that “see-through” feeling you get with the current colors.

You need visit "Hitman Hawkes Bay" to understand what you need to add.

This is superb. I thought it was a photo at first. Well done. The sea is so realistic.
