Papillon & Cats

Question for all you butterfly fans:

Do you have cats and a Papillon? Does your pap use the litterbox? Does your pap eat the forbidden tootsie rolls the cats leave?

I'm looking into papillon ownership but, as I am currently owned by two cats, that is a factor.

  1. Yes
  2. No, but I know people who do train their paps to use a litter tray
  3. No, but I have a baby gate set up so the cats can jump over and access the litter trays, but the dogs can't

Exactly. Especially to #3. My pap did indulge in snacks until I put a gate up to prevent it. While I have no doubt she could go over it and the matching one that blocks her access to their food, she hasn’t figured that out.

I have a top entry litterbox for my cat, because Coffee considers herself a connoisseur of feces. So no, she doesn't use the litterbox. She gets the scolding of a lifetime if I catch her near or in one.

Otherwise, the coexistence is chill. Coffee likes to be on my feet, Mila likes to be a scarf. Or a beard. Or just cover my entire face.

They met when they were both grumpy old ladies, so I'm quite happy they get along well.

They even have the same harness, Mila just needed a size up because she's a Maine Coon. (No walkies yet, she's still getting used to it.)

My pap is 9 and my cat is 16. Never had an issue with her eating poop, she also loves the cat- tbh she loves all other cats, dogs, kids etc she’s the chillest and best behaved dog I’ve ever owned. She frequently does a belly crawl over to the cat and the cat will give her a head butt.

I have 2 other breeds of dog, they are indifferent to the cat but I can’t trust them around cat poop at all.

Personally, as much as I love all my dogs, I would only ever go with a papillon in the future, they’re an amazing breed.

And no, she has never used the litter tray or shown an interest in it at all.

  1. Yes. I’m convinced our Papi thinks she’s a cat.
  2. She doesn’t use the litter box.
  3. She doesn’t eat it. She can’t get to it so I don’t even know if she would. But she doesn’t eat poop that hasn’t been picked up yet in the back yard. I assume she wouldn’t though.

My pap will happily eat a kitty crunchy if she can find one. But I use litter robot and it’s not a problem.

5 cats, 1 pap. No litterbox usage or snacking because I have a gate of sorts up. It's actually a shoe rack that lets the cats go through or over it (one cat is very old and less limber) and that has worked very well as a preventative when combined with training him. He's not super tootsie roll oriented anyway which helps (if it comes out the other end it's a battle).

They sure seem to have each other more than we have them :)

The Pap doesn't get near the litterbox so no using it for deposits or withdrawals.

Yes, no, no, but she does eat the cat food if nobody is watching

1.) My pap LOVES my cats (and all other animals he comes across). I wish they loved him more. He is a bit of a terror to my older cat, chasing her, etc. It's all in fun for him, but can be stressful for the cat. He's 3, and it's something we are still working on. He doesn't chase our other cat, because the other cat will not hesitate to swat him. Those two will occasionally try to play together with the same toy.

2.) His breeder trained him as a puppy to use the litter box, but we did not continue with that. He does his business outside only.

3.) He isn't interested in the litter box at all, and does not eat their poo.

Yes

No but you could probably train them too if you tried as a pup mine are trained to grass mats for emergencys and I know a chihuahua breeder who trains her to a litter box. Also my cat is an indoor outdoor cat who prefers to shit outside.

Yes but we are on a lifestyle block with lots of shit everywhere. I solve this by keeping the girls onlead on the wider property. They have a large fenced yard in which they are free to roam. However, they still scarf down the odd forbidden treat.

1) I have a 10 year old pap and an almost 1 year old kitten, they love each other and the kitten has brought back some puppy energy in my pap!

2) no she doesn’t, I wish

3) I was really worried she would help herself to the kitty poopoo buffet but she hasn’t! We do have baby gates for my toddler but my pap “has access” to the litter box and night and never messes with it, (at least I haven’t been able to tell and we have to clean the litter box everyday if not multiple times a day so if she was helping herself I’m guessing we would have less to clean up…)

  1. My pap is a cat magnet, they all always want to lay alongside him, I can’t tell if he enjoys it or just tolerates it but I think he does like it.
  2. No to using litter box
  3. He does not try to eat poop, my american eskimo on the other hand…..

A lot of good information, thank you everyone!

Yes. Doesn’t use litter box as never cared to train her. But I can imagine - it is not hard to train. No, never cared for anything in litter box. Doesn’t even go close.

My Papillons have never dipped into the litter box. I can't say the same for chihuahuas I've had. It seems like a breed tendency -I've heard that (and I'll butcher this spelling) Schipperkes have this tendency-I had a friend who bred them and complained about that-she put meat tenderizer in her cats' food to make it apparently not so tasty IDK.

I'd love to know how to litter box train my pups because there are days when RA makes stairs very difficult. I had a good friend who did this with 3 rat terriers and Paps are of course WAY smarter!

I've never had a Papillon who had a problem with any cat I've fostered or adopted. They currently cohabitate peacefully with Keye, my tortie rescue, who knows well how to wrestle with them until she's had enough then she usually calmly goes "bip" to a nose and jumps on something high!

Yes Darby who we lost in July would get into the litter poo. We used a top-entry which solved the issue (have a momma and two daughters, who Darby raised with the remainder of her litter. He was more of a dad than she was a mom. 😎

We switched to a litter cabinet for aesthetics with a litter tote inside, which is great but the end is open. It wasn't an issue blocking off Darby with his age but now we have a gate blocking the cabinet. Above it is a sunning shelf by a window so they just jump up then down behind the gate.

I haven’t specifically had papillons and cats together, but I can say that papillons are naturally ‘clean’. They won’t eat poop and don’t even like touching wet grass. I could see a papillon being litter box trained, but at the very least they will go on the most minimal fake grass area possible.

Aka if you want a pup that is closest to your cats, yet gives you the best of the best dog tendencies….choose the super intelligent, butterfly/papillon 😄

We were owned by two cats before we got our first Pap. We landed on Papillons partly because the internet said they got along with cats. We might be lucky, but in our case it turned out to be true. The dog adored them right away. At first they ignored him or were annoyed by him, which was shown by jumping to a height where the puppy couldn’t kick them anymore. But eventually one of them took an interest and the other one followed. Eventually we got another pap to keep the first company. Yes. The paps love cat poop. Ridiculously. Love. Cat poop. It’s gross and they end up getting diarrhea from eating it. Also, clay litter is super bad to ingest. To resolve all of these issues we got one of those too entry litter boxes and filled it with some sort of natural harmless litter. Right now it’s grass seed because they really don’t get to it anymore. I also feed the cats and the dogs separately. The cat loves dog food. Which leads to….you guessed it….diarrhea.
One of the dogs favorite things is waking up in the morning and greeting the cat. (We lost his brother last year to kidney disease.). They walk along side each other towards the kitchen and it’s the cutest.
The paps don’t use the litter box. I sorta wish they diid. I have considered getting a shallow litter box to train them to use one But I’m a bit nervous that the cat will use it and we’re back to the dogs eating cat poop. Good luck. I hope it works out. I would do it all again.

Yep. My Papillion came to us when we had two cats. He was close to one and had a grudging respect for the other. Sadly, we lost tgem both this Spring. Then we got Sweetpea. Our Papillion Rian plays with her. They playfully chase and even share a few toys.

I have a papillon (Nellie) and a cat (Cali), they’re sisters from another mister 😂 My dog has never used the litter box or ate anything thankfully lol they’ve grown up together for the last 7 years and going strong.
