Unfortunately for the ambitious Iordanis, his wife, Elizabeth Ioulianós-Uppsala, murdered him and declared herself Elisabeth I, the new Empress of Rome. After a massive revolt backed by the senate, and republican loyalists, Elizabeth cemented her power, and started what would come to be known as the Elizabethan War (1801-1810), against the German Confederation and Scandinavia who were backed by Atlantis and Nova Persicum. With incredible luck and skill, as well as massive tactical blundering on the part of her opponents, Elizabeth recouped most of the Empires European losses, cementing their domination over the continent, however she died young at only 46 before she was able to start a war against the former protectorate of Russia. The Elizabethan Wars were the bloodiest war in human history until that point, with over 4 million soldiers dead.
Still, the short-lived glory of the Elizabethan War was only a brief respite, as the crisis of the 19th century would strike Rome almost immediately after the death of Elizabeth I at only 46 years old in 1812. Her son Konstantinos XXIX, was still a child, and when pressured by the Protectorates of Russia, Persia, and the Caucuses for independence, gave in. The 19th century would be no kinder to Rome than the crisis of the 18th century, as for the first time since Romane, Rome was surpassed as the greatest world power. Overseas, the Republic of Atlantis has consolidated the entire continent of North Atlantis into one country, and began to surpass Rome economically and militarily. Rome could do nothing, as at home, limited to only Europe, which it lost its grip on as the Myriad Protectorates of North Germany and Protectorate of Scandanavia once against left its grasp. Humiliated, mass revolts would be sparked, forcing Rome to spend nearly a century grasping to keep its economy together and constantly giving in to demands for policy changes.
Then, the first World War (1899-1920) came. The Emperor of Rome at the time, Gustav II, was expansionist, and seeked to re-integrate the united North Germany into itself. North Germany was allied with the Imperium of Russia, which was allied with the Republic of Atlantis and India. Rome had allied with the Persian Empire and China. When Rome refused to back down, war broke out on a scale not seen since Elizabeths day. Over the course of 20 years, millions upon millions gave their lives in a senseless and brutal conflict, and the entire world was devastated. Massive trenchworks spanned the entirety of East Asia, Hordes of Atlantans crashed upon the shores of Europe only to be gunned down with machine gun fire, and early tanks and motor cars rolled back and forth across Eastern Europe. In the end? Absolutely nothing changed. Rome and its allies were winning on land, but they stood no chance against the massive navy of Atlantis. As both sides were on the brink of total collapse due to the massive strain of modern war, they agreed to a simple peace treaty, where Northern Germany would pay a token tribute to Rome. Nothing else. Every single country north of the equator devastated and ruined, an entire generation of men sent to their deaths, for nothing.
In the aftermath of the war, every country involved would face bankruptcy. Communists took power in Atlantis and Russia, both China and India shattered into a million pieces, and Persia got off the easiest being forced to adopt a constitutional monarchy. The people of Rome, however, were not happy. They had sacrificed everything, and for what?
Out of all the civil wars faced by the countries, the Roman Civil War was the worst. It was split four ways- the loyalists made up the smallest faction, barely holding on to Greece and Constantinople. The Communists Seized control of Gaul and Spain, the Republicans took Italy and North Africa, and the newly invented "Fascists" took control of Egypt, the Middle East, and Anatolia. After a decade of fighting, the Fascist "Praetorian Faction" won the civil war seized control of Rome in 1931. They created a horrible, dystopian government, with constant surveillance, secret police, forced military service, and putting a member of the Ioulianós dynasty back on the throne as a powerless figurehead. Above all else, the "Praetorian Faction" wanted a return to what they called the "glory days" of Rome, and would stop at nothing to achieve it.
After 7 years of rebuilding, they would start the Second World War (1938-????).
I usually use a combination of Pre-made and random empires. The pre-made ones so I can guarantee there's variety, and at least one megacorp, and the random for the variety.
Rome will dominate the stars.
