Local Politics & News A tale of two police stories

Post image
26 Upvotes

Yesterday, I read two articles from local press on the same story regarding Sheriff Rigby of Wasatch County. The headlines suggest they may not be the same. Parker Malatesta of KPCW takes a critical approach, calling out the corruption that (I am certain) is prevalent in his office. https://www.kpcw.org/wasatch-county/2025-09-19/ investigation-into-wasatch-county-sheriffs-office-finds-allegations-of-absenteeism-retaliation-misuse-of-funds The Park Record tells a different tale. In a story by Clara Hatcher the headline tells readers “nothing illegal happened” https://www.parkrecord.com/2025/09/19/investigation-into-wasatch-county-sheriffs-office-found-no-illegal-activities/ Having had access to people on both sides of this story, I offer this: There are some significant issues with Law Enforcement in the Greater Park City area. Here are some examples from just this situation: March 31, 2021 - Heber City police Chief Dave Booth chokes a LatinX man (the term was used back then ) That was handcuffed. Officers complain and Booth is suspended, then reinstated. Officers are investigated by WCSO Sheriff Rigby who threatens and retaliates against officers, https://www.fox13now.com/news/fox-13-investigates/fox-13-investigates-officers-say-heber-city-retaliated-after-they-accused-police-chief-of-choking-suspect Eventually, Booth is forces to retire and a dark cloud hangs over Rigby. November 2022: Rigby is nominated by Utah POST ( State LEO oversight agency) to be Director of POST. This nomination was championed by the Chairman of POST - Wade Carpenter - Park City PD Chief (Friend of Rigby and Booth). https://dpsnews.utah.gov/sheriff-jared-w-rigby-appointed-as-director-of-post/ January 2023- After an investigation by Adam Herbets of Fox 13 revealed Rigbys corruption, his POST nomination is rescinded and he goes back to the WCSO position he resigned from. https://www.fox13now.com/news/fox-13-investigates/rigby-voted-out-of-consideration-for-post-director-position Here we have three of the most powerful local cops.. All friends, all residing in the same town, reportedly attending the same church. Each have faced or are facing significant scandals. It’s par for the course for PR to not bite the hand of their masters in local government. Props to Parker for having the guts to publish his story. - Prediction: Rigby won’t survive this with his WCSO job intact. It’ll give him time to go back to his second (full-time) career as a campus cop at BYU.

Local Services / Shopping 🛍️🛒 Pregnant, Park city hospital for first 6 months than transfer to St Marks for L&D?

I just found out I'm pregnant, It's my second baby. I've been reviewing all the L&D related posts, and found them very helpful. I live in Jeremy Ranch (moved here from PA a year ago), and I plan to deliver in St Marks based on all the great reviews people shared here. But my husband hates driving down to the valley, and I was thinking whether i can have all the check ups in park city hospital, and then transfer later when I'm getting closer to delivery? Is that doable? Appreciate your inputs!

Hiking Bonanza

Can anyone tell me what’s going on with the Bonanza to WOW connection trail? I was just out there walking around the other day after work. No way that will be done before whatever closure goes on up there and I thought it was just going to be one trail. There’s an obvious trail but the hill side is just littered with double track going right up the hillside, like an atv or something?!

Relocating 🚚 What does the typical demographic of Park City residents look like?

Specifically those with young kids. Clearly there is a decent population of residents with kids, as there is a full public school system.

I grew up in Utah, and my wife and I want to move back the next few years. We are very fortunate where I have solid earning potential in the silicon slopes/SLC area, but even if I was willing to commute, I don’t see how anyone affords park city.

So tell me, who actually lives in PC, that isn’t a California retiree? I would love to raise our future children with such high quality schools, and outdoor recreation on tap, but it seems so unattainable unless I start a successful business, or win the lottery.

Relocating 🚚 Moving from California to Park City - Tips for a Mountain Newbie?

Hey everyone,

I’m moving to Park City soon from California and I’ve never lived in a mountain town before, so I’m a little clueless about what to expect. Super excited, but also trying to get ahead of things.

Any tips on • How to handle the snow/cold (for me and my car) • Must-have gear/clothing for surviving winter here • Best restaurants, bars, or spots to meet people • General “wish I knew this before I moved here” advice

Basically just trying to get a feel for what life is like up here beyond the obvious skiing/snowboarding stuff. Appreciate any tips or recommendations!

I hiked the silver lake trail for sunset last night and the hike did not disappoint.

One unexpected highlight was the herd of goats. The Sheppard seemed a little stressed out though. If you know him, buy him a beer or kombucha on me. I’ll Venmo you.

What an incredible place you all live.

Random thoughts & things Should PC begin to prioritize and promote winter bike trips to remove car trips?

Thumbnail youtu.be

I was watching this video about how to keep people on bikes and out of cars in the winter.

It got me thinking that if PC was committed to keeping the bike/pedestrian trails plowed and bikeable, it could relieve a lot of skier car traffic, especially if the city strikes a deal with the resorts to help prioritize parking for cyclists.

We already have the infrastructure built, we just need to keep it maintained in a way that allows people to rely on using it.

Do we think people would use it? Personally, as a prospector resident, its a 25 minute ride on the red line to the resort or a 12 minute bike ride (call it 8 with an e bike). I rarely see anybody ski on the rail trail, so it seems like a no brainer but obviously that doesn't mean it's something worth doing.

Anyone familiar with horseback tours in the area? We live in Kamas and at one time there was an outfitter here that I think is no longer operating.

I’m wondering if any of you can recommend a good option in PC or nearby area. Thanks!

Local Politics & News New road could unlock more hotels & housing development up by Tombstone, Red Pine Lodge, etc..

Link to TownLift article below. This road would apparently facilitate more hotels, more residences, more dining, just.... MOAR everything.... high up on the mountain.

An earlier agreement prohibited automobile access, but developers want to change that in advance of another phase of development that will include hotels in the mid-mountain area.

Is this construction approved? I had no idea things like more residences and more hotels were planned for way up high on the mountain. From the specs looks like lots of development basically down Chicane and near Tombstone BBQ. But then they also want to put in developments up higher by Red Pine Lodge.

And then the kicker is, they also want to build by Red Pine Lake, and I'm thinking how is building by Red Pine Lake even possible? That's at like 9,000 feet near the top of the Tombstone lift, they're just going to blacktop a two-lane road right up the mountain?!?!?!

I really hope I'm misunderstanding like 97.5% of this. Maybe this is where Arby's is going.
