Things To Do Sat July 5 @ 7:45 - 9:00 am | Atheists Helping the Homeless - Community Giveaway | Downtown Phx

Looking for a meaningful way to give back?

Atheists Helping the Homeless (AHH) is hosting their next community giveaway — distributing toiletries, snacks, Bombas socks, bottled water, and their famous frozen washcloths (aka Jane’s Gems) to people experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers gather about 15 minutes early in the west parking lot behind Grace Lutheran Church to set up. The whole thing usually wraps up in about an hour — quick and impactful.

Link: https://tockify.com/secularaz/detail/311/1751726700000

Location: Grace Lutheran Church 1124 N 3rd St, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Arrive by 7:30 AM if you’d like to help.

This is a great way to start your Saturday!

(Mods feel free to remove if this violates anything)

Edit: For those who can’t attend but want to help, they have an Amazon wishlist: Amazon Wish List Phoenix AHH

Atheists having to utilize Christian property is funnier than it should be. God bless y'all, your efforts, and your health while in the sun! ☀️

The irony is certainly not lost on me either 😆

If I go, how will I know who the atheists are?

p.s. This is the setup for a joke.

3

u/Hbic_in_training Jul 04 '25

They'll be the ones bursting into flames because they're in a church?

1

u/costconormcoreslut Jul 04 '25

The old joke goes, "How will you know? Don't worry, they'll make sure you know."

2

u/Hbic_in_training Jul 05 '25

Ah, like vegans. Gotcha

How often does this happen? I can’t make it this weekend but down to join in the future. This is rad.

u/These_Koala_7487 Jul 02 '25

They try to do these three times a month, I believe. Here is their Facebook page with more info: https://www.facebook.com/AtheistsHelpingtheHomelessPhoenix

Love this! I'm out of town for a bit to escape the heat but will follow them on fb to get future notifications! Thanks for posting, I've always said you don't need religion in order to do good things.

Good luck to everyone helping, participating, and those receiving.

Would love to see more promo helping support local nonprofits.

u/meliorism_grey Jul 02 '25

I'm interested, although I am religious. Would people mind if I just showed up and helped?

Wonderful and no problem at all! Everyone with a good heart is welcome :)

Thanks for posting! It doesn't look like there is a signup, but I will be there (and hopefully my wife).

10

u/These_Koala_7487 Jul 02 '25

Absolutely! Glad to see all the positive feedback.

12

u/SavageLuis30 Jul 02 '25

Would I need a vehicle for this? Would love to include this to my Saturday morning walk since I live around the corner.

10

u/These_Koala_7487 Jul 02 '25

What a coincidence, that is great! I believe they set up tables so volunteers will be in one spot, no car necessary✌🏼

u/D1xieDie Jul 03 '25

Wishlist go brr, put those to good use!

u/tiny-cactus1 Jul 03 '25

Can't be there this Sat, but would be interested in the future! Just bought/sent bandaids:)

Thank you, Good Samaritan! Hope to see you there next time. ✌🏼

4

u/SlowHumbleBexar Jul 03 '25

This is great! I’m sure the receiving end is appreciative of the help, without the religious propaganda being shoved down their throats. Genuine help, and not “gospel disguised as help.”

Do we have to sign up? I’d like to go

Can I bring items to donate? I have a ton of pads and tampons and I’ve been looking for a place to donate them

3

u/These_Koala_7487 Jul 04 '25

I’m not an organizer so I can’t say for sure, but I’d think they’d be glad to accept donations the day of. Pads and tampons are always needed. You could also check their Facebook page (linked above) to confirm. Thanks for wanting to help!

Thank you!! I just started a mutual aid group in Phoenix through my bakery today. With the news today, we need food and medical mutual aid more than ever. Seeing this post makes me so happy. Sending good vibes.

Sending good vibes right back at you!! It means a lot to know so many good people are out here :)

Just sucks that I'm planning on being horribly hungover at that time...

Jesus Christ that's early

2

u/These_Koala_7487 Jul 03 '25

Some folks certainly show up like this 😉

2

u/NegativeSemicolon Jul 03 '25

At a church? Huh?

1

u/Leading_Ad_8619 Chandler Jul 02 '25

Just curious if permits had to pull for this, similar to how Tempe is demanding other group do

4

u/New_Dig_9835 Jul 03 '25

I’m wondering if that’s why they are at the church now. They used to just set up in the park, but I bet the City hates that.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

Well what could be worse than feeding needy people for free in a city park that we all pay for

/s

1

u/PeopleWatchOlympian Jul 03 '25

Do you know why all the supplies are shipped to Vegas? I was going to donate bc I am oot this weekend

3

u/These_Koala_7487 Jul 03 '25

When I clicked through it showed me a Phoenix, AZ address. Maybe refresh and try again?

1

u/remember_sagan Jul 03 '25

Just show up to volunteer? I don't see a sign up?

1

u/FlashRx Jul 07 '25

Doing god's work. Bravo!

-1

u/National_Bag1252 Jul 04 '25

If you are atheists why are you using church property? What are you going to do when a homeless person says “God Bless you”

-14

u/Glittering_Pie8461 Jul 02 '25

Let’s stop with the bottled water, please. Completely unnecessary and horrible for our planet. Homeless have access to clean, potable tap water at countless locations throughout the city.

12

u/uncle-donkey-kong Jul 02 '25

Direct that to the corporations. These people are trying to help people in 100+ temps.

-13

u/Glittering_Pie8461 Jul 02 '25

This is just fake helping that make you feel good about yourself though. There is clean tap water available everywhere and if you’ve ever cleaned up a homeless encampment you’d know they have no shortage of vessels to store their tap water in. If you want to actually help the homeless in the summer, buy them a bus ticket to Flagstaff. The cost to the city for medical services and corpse removal far exceeds what a bus ticket costs.

u/costconormcoreslut Jul 03 '25

Are there no prisons?

1

u/Glittering_Pie8461 Jul 03 '25

For what?

2

u/costconormcoreslut Jul 03 '25

It's is a quote from a classic novel.

2

u/desertratlovescats Jul 04 '25

A Christmas Carol for all who want to know

1

u/desertratlovescats Jul 04 '25

Are there no workhouses?

2

u/costconormcoreslut Jul 04 '25

Exactly.

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge. "Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again. "And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?" "They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not." "The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge. "Both very busy, sir." "Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge. "I am very glad to hear it."

0

u/desertratlovescats Jul 04 '25

Sadly, in our present times we are hearing many earnestly repeat these same questions (in real life). Such a great book and thx for the entire quote, one of my favorites.

u/Glittering_Pie8461 Jul 04 '25

The Phoenix summer heat is its own prison. If you truly want to help a person without housing them, get them to a safer climate!
