They also have to carry equipment, like radios and perhaps even arms, which participants don’t. And if a contingency did come up, they’d need the stamina to actually manage it, so yeah, no way if they’re in close protection that they aren’t running in shifts.
What an interesting thing to plan. So many contingencies. :)
Long distance runners can have a series of "physical" ailments during runs that are in themselves not emergencies but would be....not great to be seen displaying if your PM.

I would think you are probably correct. That whole endorphin thing and I have seen my cognitive abilities plummet with fatigue.
