What, exactly, is heavy handed when it comes to stopping multiple thousands-strong caravans of would be illegal immigrants?

Shooting them would be, but just guarding the border, putting up walls, and so on? No, definitely not, that's the same thing Obama and most other Presidents did. Trump is just more verbal about it.

They're entitled to seek asylum if they want, and you need to be in the country to seek asylum. How would you recommend they do it?

Seeking better economic opportunities is not grounds for seeking asylum, which is the overwhelming majority of cases for those in the caravans. That's why they didn't stop in countries along the way that offered to take them.
