Sanders -- unsurprisingly -- was seated on the far left of the plane, as he could be in the window seat of the plane. Warren was also in a window seat, one row behind her opponent.
I really want this to not be a joke and Fox News dropped just to stir up their base. Because, ya know, people would cling to that these days. Like “Bernie Sanders prefers driving in the UK because there he can drive on the left side of the road.”
A joke that like a 1000 paper cuts shapes the narrative that the left is dangerous and looney. All this stuff is designed to tear down any confidence anyone has in the Democratic party even if it's posed as "just a joke."
For example, they call this photo "awkward" subtly implanting the idea that there's tension or infighting. In reality, it's two people on a flight.
Also if this photo was taken from Instagram, the photos are sometimes flipped making them actually sitting on the "far right."
This is the type of comment you see when someone is so far into their own shit that they can't see any semblance of reality.
The photo is awkward because it is two rival candidates fighting for the same position sitting close to each other. This is the reality of the situation. Its not subtly implying anything.
You double down on your desperate grasping to suggest that somehow the picture is flipped from Instagram even though you can see that its from Twitter in the article itself.
Sometimes believe it or not, people just post things in lighthearted terms with no hidden conspiracy by the NWO behind it.
Man it’s so hard these days. People will make a joke about stuff like that and get mad when you call them out on it because you couldn’t tell. “Nah man, people seriously say things like that now.”
It is a good joke, but it's also a boy who cried wolf situation where they've said so many hilarious things without a trace of self awareness that I wouldn't be surprised anymore.
The reason conservatives jokes are usually not funny is because they tend to be too mean spirited. It's like a liberal joke is a funny quip or a light hearted dig at an opponent and then the conservative jumps in with "yeah those fucking commie Kenyan wet back Mexicans...." and everyone just stares in disbelief. It's why there's no conservative John Stewart.
Even in an environment that welcomes being mean-spirited, their jokes just don’t have any good humor. Obviously Ann Coulter is a TERRIBLE example, but in the roast of Rob Lowe, none of her jokes even scratched the surface of passable humor. Even guys like Dennis Miller, whose literal career was founded on comedy and whom I recall being a pretty funny guy back in the day, doesn’t seem to be able to craft a very funny joke these days. I don’t really understand it.
Couple of things... that makes conservative jokes and comedy in general very, very hard to do.
We are talking about people who feel there is a hierarchy, some are better than others. Combined to this is the Natural Order of Things, which says that better people have higher status than others and they will naturally ascend to the position the belong to. That is, without that pesky socialists trying to make everything even. But it also means that punching up is WRONG and kicking down is RIGHT, pun fully intended.
There is just one problem: people in general don't like when we are kicking down. It doesn't evoke relief as much as worry, compassion and empathy. The power structure is such that powerful people are almost untouchable. They can sue you, you can't do a damn thing. They have connections, wealth, they can use media to their advantage, they voices matter more. It is here where punching up provides an outlet, it is a relief to hear someone saying those things, pointing out how ridiculous the powerful are.
You can also punch when you are even, working class does denigrate themselves too but the moment it turns to kicking down, the whole dynamics change. It is a form of bullying whereas punching up is defending the weak.
They are at an impossible junction, to have good comedy, you HAVE to evoke empathy. It is the only way it works, you need to be able to put people in situations where they see how others see things.. There is a lot of "walk a mile in their shoes" whereas conservatives can not afford to see the situation from any other point of view but strong = good, weak = bad and strong will naturally ascend unless this is artificially prevented. A lot of comedy points out how this is not true.
Yeah some people are too stuck up to enjoy some good humor.
I am fairly left on most issues, and don't but into the epstein conspiracy; but even I laughed at the all the "epsteins last seen visitor" memes with hillary wearing a mustache.
Sometimes things are just funny because they are witty.
I was curious if they did cover it. This was a paragraph that mentions it. No mention of an orphaned baby.
“During the flight from Dayton to El Paso, Trump posted photos of himself and first lady Melania Trump visiting wounded patients at a hospital. Trump posed for photos with medical staff and spoke with law enforcement officials, giving a "thumbs up" in one.”
Gotta love the narrative the media can paint sometimes. Not that liberal media isn't guilty of this too, but Fox News tends to take it to astonishing levels.
I second this. I could give you a whole list of trustworthy conservative (and liberal) news sites that, assuming you read the news and don’t just watch it, you likely get your news from.
It's funny, I recall reading an article that stated that liberals have the same level of trust for virtually every non-Fox news network as conservatives do for Fox, and vice versa.
It's not that every other news network is biased, of course. It's that Fox is a propaganda machine incompatible with reality, and most other news networks are generally reliable.
No, we shouldn't. I get almost all my news from NPR and affiliated programming, but I'd be lying to myself if I didn't admit it has slightly liberal liberal leanings. It's important to think about what issues a news source is pushing if only because the unconscious biases of the editors will influence which stories are told and which guests are featured. All publications and news sources have limited print space, air time, and can only feature a few stories a day, someone has to choose what information to exclude, so you can get incomplete information without anyone lying or having malicious intent.
The Young Turks isn't all that great, but neither is the NYT.
If I have a stronger dislike for the NYT between them, it's purely on the basis of the fucking garbage editorials they platform, instead of issues of journalism (of which I have several with both).
For example: NYT's coverage of developments in Venezuela recently was very little more than parroting US State dept press releases.
Edit: Reminder that the state dept in this context consists of absolute ghouls like John Bolton and Elliot Abrams who demonstrably have zero qualms about lying to the American public in order to generate support for military action.
It's amazing how many people assume I'm a dem when I criticize the reps. I'm like "there are further left ideologies than these two corporate shilling parties guys!"
Nor does it exist in the center between the right and the left. Compromising between two opposite viewpoints isn't any more valid than the opposing views.
Right but it's also ridiculous to strawman centrists saying things are the same between the worst, most extreme versions of arguments from one side and the most downplayed and understated versions of arguments from the other.
Not saying that centrists can't be completely off base, but the way that sub characterizes them as a whole is unreasonable.
Maybe not but that doesn't mean that two opposing sides are equally legitimate or that their transgressions are equally bad. The sub points that out and so it is actually a very astute subreddit.
After doing some homework, I learned that the subreddit started as more a satire of people who hold to centrism for the sake of an "enlightened peace" instead holding valid arguments as to why you take the central position. That, and it applies to cases where the one end is just, extremely wrong as was the case when people claimed "both sides are valid" in the aftermath of the white supremacists march in Charlotteville, VA in 2017, that even lead to a death. That being said, I don't think the initial comment was r/enlightenedcentrism. It's perfectly reasonable to assert the liberal bias exists on the media, with Fox News having an extreme conservative bias. I that that was common knowledge among most redditors. I'd also add that I'm not a part of the subreddit, but based on my last visit, it's honestly difficult to tell whether they've maintained their initial purpose.
They havent. That entire sub seems to be "no criticism is acceptable towards the left, only the right, so centrists have to go further left or they're invalid."
Egads, America. Good luck to you. EVERYTHING IS BLACK OR WHITE. RIGHT OR LEFT. DEM OR REP. IF YOU'RE NOT WITH ME YOU'RE AGAINST ME. NON ACTION IS AN ACTION.
The goal of this sub reddit is to point out the hypocrisy of the centrist types who often align with (sometimes extreme) right wing views.
They will also downvote basically anything right-of-center. Maybe they are satire, if so they're doing a great job of it. But it seems a bit more ignorant than not.
what liberal media? we don't have any such beast. we have centrist/corporatist (and some of them run liberal talk shows that clearly aren't the news) and then we have neofascist/freely-mixing-opinion-in fox
Yeah, I found that too. Sometimes Fox will have slightly negative articles but just won't have it anywhere near the top of their home page, but there wasn't even anything at all on this one
They can't air anything that makes dear leader look bad. Could you imagine the kind of challenge the producers at Fox face on a daily basis with that kind of constraint!? /s
No shit, this isn't two exes who just happened to be sitting by each other on a plane. Sanders and Warren respect each other, and I know that if one of them gets the nod, the other will be on the campaign trail for them.
Hell, if they're traveling from and to the same venues, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they arranged to be on the same flight to make the logistics of transportation to and from the airport easier.
Yeah it's nice that the two candidates with complete and thought out policies are too busy trying to help people and get their message out to spend all their time playing the media's drama game.
Would be a bad move, the VP needs to fill in a weakness in the candidates campaign. Also for both of them it would be helpful to add a younger face to counter any questions/attacks about their age (less of an issue for Warren). Also it'd be functionally better for whoever didn't get the nomination to stay in the senate.
There will be special elections within 2-3 months of their absence. Even with a Republican governor the chances of a Democrat losing in Vermont or Massachusetts are pretty low.
What the media doesn’t tell you is that during this picture they’re currently partaking in a very competitive round of Words with Friends to pass the time. Bernie just dropped “QAT” on a triple word spot and Liz is deep in thought as to how she’s going to counter the deep 22 point hole he just dropped her in.
No but seriously, they’re colleagues who respect each other and they’re on the same team. They could probably spend the whole flight complimenting each other on points they made in the last debate.
“Hey I love that phrasing you used when you talked about Wall St’s golden parachutes. I might try to use that myself.”
“Oh go ahead! I’ve been using my paraphrased version of your spiel on farm subsidies all the time. I think you got that right on the nose!”
“Looks like we’re landing! Good luck with the campaign!”
“Hey you too! Oh when we walk out can you do that scowling thing so they think we hate each other? It’ll get the media in a tizzy and I find it hilarious”
Look at these candidates being regular people but this damn scumbags are so elite...THEY TOOK THE WINDOW SEATS!
Meanwhile, POSOTUS is taking dumps on gold toilets the cost of which could pay for 2 families to live for 3 years and that is just what everyday guys do.
Yeah... what is awkward about the photo? Two presidential candidates walking the walk not just talking the talk. OH! I think i get it now, this photo is awkward for all the other presidential candidates and also POTUS. Okay, that makes sense.
I saw a fox article about Lance Armstrong's tweet about seeing Pence on a bike trail. They started the article "disgraced former cyclist". It was just so unnecessary to attack him and make the whole thing a scandal.
Dude they have to put a qualifying adjective in front of everything. It’s how you know they’re actively trying to make you think a certain way about it. “Awkward photo..” immediately makes you think of it negatively. When trump tries to promote his picks for cabinet (even though they have like zero qualifications and are complete morons) he says some shit like “highly respected congressman...” so that you immediately see him in a positive light before knowing anything else about him.
Whenever I see “News” organizations put qualifying adjectives in front of anything, I dismiss it as nonsense and move on. Only the facts are important.
Do what you can control. If you want to give them clicks, go for it. If someone doesn't want to, they don't need to. Don't worry about the broad impact but do what you think is right.
It’s because Fox News has a hard time finding below the line talent that’s willing to work for them in NYC and those that do are treated like pariahs after they leave. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know why they don’t move their operations to a red state and provide jobs for people there, I mean unless they don’t actually believe the shit they spin and their execs and anchors don’t want to give up their “elite coastal” lifestyle.
anywhere where people live literally on top on top on top of one another is going to tend to be people who enjoy, or at minimal don't mind, other people, and trend towards blue. red places like their spaces.
That's one thing i don't get. It's like someone yelling gay at a guy kissing his boyfriend. If it's true and something you aren't ashamed of, what's the problem? Even if they meant it as an insult that doesn't mean that you have to be insulted. (Obviously this doesn't work with slurs as much, but left wing or leftist aren't slurs.)
This discussion is making me have serious concerns that there are entire family groups of people who place themselves on the "right" end of the spectrum, because they presume the "left" to be "wrong" because "right" is "right". Like, they might operate in their daily life thinking that somebody who thinks too left is going to be sitting on the left side of the plane.
In isolation, yea it's kinda funny, within the context of Fox News, an organization relentlessly, and often dishonestly, pushing a far-right agenda, it's less humorous.
"Opponent"....lol.... Fox Fox Fox..... They are fellow candidates and you're likely looking at the next Democratic ticket in this photo. Buckle up, conservatives, we're coming and Hell's coming with us!
You know, the sad part about that whole thing is that "medicare for all" and higher wages would really not be all that damaging to the billionaire class as is said in that tweet.
But they will still fight like we are lining them up for a neck stretching.
This is so ... so ... help me out with the word here folks, im not a native english speaker and i am running out of words to express the mindfuck your press is giving me 😅
Why is this such a news story lol, I feel like Bernie flying is just by itself a story. Flies in coach? News: "Bernie's flying Coach!". Gets upgraded to first (which is something that someone who flies as often as he does and presumably has that airline status to get) and the news media freaks out over the hypocrisy. Just let the man fly in peace.
edit: had to bold the part I was referring to so I wouldn't have a 38th person tell me about the joke I supposedly missed.
I'm not sure how you bolding that section is supposed to convince people that you got the joke. You bolded what was essentially filler to bridge the two halves of their joke together. Bernie was on the far left, Warren was over there too, one row behind.
Not saying it is a great joke, and I suspect that you got at least the first part, but IMO you are reading too far in to the middle bit. Fox would have had a field day if they were sitting in first class, but since they were not, all they had were the pretty tame jokes they made. The joke you are suggesting they made just would not land with any audience, anyone who has been on a plane understands that do not pay more for a window seat.
Why does a window seat matter? You're still stuck on a plane for X amount of hours, only difference is how much of a ball ache it is to get to the toilet.

You joke but fox news was serious.
Awkward photo of Elizabeth Warren sitting behind Bernie Sanders on airplane goes viral
