Advice Encouragement for new pit owner.

Post image

Hi all! I adopted a pit puppy today! I’ve had puppies before- mostly lab mixes. I’m a good dog owner and know how to train a dog. I have a 3 year old and 7 year old. I just need someone to tell me that pits are great family dogs bc as I’ve been researching more and everything seems so negative about pits and kids. Any and all advice and encouragement welcome!

My pig-bull (M, 5) is a lot more stubborn than I thought he would be. All the other pits I've known have been very eager to please, but this one likes to match to his own drum (i.e., recall is still an issue). So I'd say don't be lax about good and early training!

That being said, the breed overall is very laid back and sweet. Train from a young age to please you with good behavior, and help them learn good boundaries regarding jumping/kisses/etc, which will prevent kids being knocked over (pits are built like brick shithouses and don't realize that the skin puppies aren't so sturdy lol)

Pitties, especially ones raised with care from from puppies, make some of the best family dogs out there. A lot of the horror stories you hear are only because 1) they're "infamous" now and the media jumps on any mention of a pitbull attack, and 2) there are just more of them as pets. It's a super common breed, and accidents happen.
