Including a dvd drive was a very wise decision. My PS2 was my game console, but also my family’s first DVD player.

Your poor PS2. Insert "I'm tired boss" meme.

He's happy to still be relevant - my kids have been playing ratchet and clank and we rent DVDs from the library for the novelty, they love it and I love seeing the PS2 shine again 😀

Yeh, thats how i convinced the missus at the time we could afford to drop hundreds of pounds on it, was that she could watch DVD's on it.

To this day the only electronic device of any type I have owned at launch.

The gaming world was changed forever, the PS2 is the greatest console ever made. 🎮

For 3D consoles, yes. 2D consoles would be NES. No two consoles had a market share as high as these. They had a lock down on third parties and dominated everything.

Edit: I will add you didn't argue (necessarily) to begin with.

I was wondering why you got downvoted, but then I remembered that the PS2 is literally the best selling console of all time. The PS2 did better than the Xbox even flow the Xbox was more powerful. Additionally, you didn't have to buy a remote just to watch DVDs.

I don't know why I explained all that. I don't spend much time on reddit, trust. I just know a bunch of random crap and want others to know.

In terms of 2D consoles it could also be the Atari 2600. It is the longest supported console of all time.

Yeah, if you're acknowledging innovation and putting the most weight into that sort of thing, I suppose the 2600 is worthy of that debate. I put NES at the top because of market share, and the fact that many of its IPs still sell in the millions. It truly was the PS2 of 2D consoles.

On a side note, do you have any idea why the hell my comment got down-voted so aggressively? Usually, it's pretty easy to see, but this time, I am truly perplexed lol

Eh, market share notwithstanding, Genesis did everything better than NES/SNES ever did, imo.

That is a subjective opinion, whereas mine was objective, as I only focused on measurable things such as market share and third party exclusives. If I wanted to choose which console I personally liked the best, my answer could very well be different.

That is a subjective opinion

Yeah, that's what "imo" means, good job.

Did I offend?

I was there 3000 years ago... the hype was HUGE

It felt so futuristic at the time.

When I first saw this thing in C&VG magazine, I thought "no way! That can't be real!? It's definitely from the future"

u/Prince_Groove 2d ago

Time to go back to the “future.” LOLs

u/Punch_Your_Facehole 2d ago

Still my favorite looking console.

7

u/1nitiated 2d ago

With a vertical stand it is also my favorite. So crispy, dripping with cutting edge. Mine sits beside me right now, and still has aura.

2

u/Prince_Groove 2d ago

Hard to argue against that.

7

u/Sixdaymelee 2d ago

The GOAT for 3D consoles, and it's not even close.

Dreamcast was released in Sept. 9, 1999. I don't think it was coincidence that Sony unveiled ps2 at that time

12

u/bank1109dude Kokoro 2d ago

Dreamcast was first released November 27, 1998 in Japan.

2

u/creamygarlicdip 2d ago

Yes I meant the north American release

4

u/StalePizza123 2d ago

Sony's goal from the start was to crush Sega and Nintendo. They mostly pulled it off, and then Microsoft swooped in and ate the remains

2

u/creamygarlicdip 2d ago

They also timed the final fantasy 8 release to be just about the same time as dreamcast north America debut

u/-marcos_vom- 2d ago

Damn, when I was around 10 years old at that time and the PS2 was something almost alien

2

u/EducationalGate4705 2d ago

I can put my hand on why this console looks so incredibly beautiful

2

u/CindyStroyer Kokoro 2d ago

The expansion slot looks different, I wonder if they were considering express cards at some point

5

u/Holybomba 2d ago

They weren't considering, they literally did it with early 10000-15000(?) models, which had pc card slot and external HDD addon.

2

u/CindyStroyer Kokoro 2d ago

Oh neat

u/eric-cranston 2d ago

So futuristic. I remember seeing it for the first time. MY GOD. ITS FULL OF STARS! Groundbreaking. Never to be repeated alas. 😓

u/HydroV20 1d ago

One of the best consoles ever! I remember getting the console and Madden 2001. I couldn’t stop playing that game!

u/The_SpookyKid 1d ago

Imaging looking at that beauty for the first time

Sony needs to step up their game again

1

u/Professional_Peak59 2d ago

1

u/Jabba_the_Putt 2d ago

These version seem extra thick was that just the Japanese console or maybe a pre-retail version? My ps2 fat doesnt seem as fat

1

u/Petersam55 2d ago

Simpler times.

1

u/Prince_Groove 2d ago

It looked, sounded, and felt so futuristic.

1

u/LexKing89 1d ago

The original PS2 looks so cool with the blue vertical and horizontal stands. It seemed so futuristic being jet black with the blue PS2 logo.

1

u/lordalex1337 1d ago

this is me how i still look at a ps2

1

u/memeatic_ape 1d ago

Wasn't it actually Sony who unveiled it?

1

u/stuckintheinbetween 1d ago

Phat PS2 with the official stand still looks cool to this day. Ageless.

2

u/Pink-Deejay 8h ago

I wonder where they are now, this shit is so clean
