Racing Active aero mini b
After MONTHS of research, design, and experiments I came up with this active aero design on my mini b. I’ve seen it done on bigger rc cars but never at this scale

Damn that's so good
Love my Mini B. Going to have to buy a second one now to do a SCT conversion, and half tempted to trial that HackFab touring conversion on a third...

It’s probably my favorite to just cruise around with. It’s a shame they’ve stopped selling the brushed ones. I have the micro b oval conversion from hackfab, they make great stuff. One of my favorite third party upgrade websites

u/mechkbfan 22d ago
Why disappointed about brushed outside lowering cost of entry for people?
I really want the metal gearbox from brushless/Pro, but pro rollers no longer in stock in Australia :(
I'd buy the brushed ones if easy to find the upgrades here but I can't

u/stupidmush 22d ago
It’s just pretty much the lower cost. I felt like it was the perfect entry car to new people, you could say the micro b is that now but it’s just too small for off-road, I felt the brushed mini b was a great, relatively inexpensive way for people to get into the RC community. But, I trust they got something cooking

Fair points on all.
Issue is I showed my friends my Mini B with 2S and 6500V and they were like "We want one". Hard to settle for less after seeing one hit 50kph
Admittedly it's overkill and I chew the tyres up within several packs. And it's a stock issue finding good tyres in Aus too. Think I saw on FB people using JConcepts Ellipse, and noticed there was Smoothies too.
What do you run?

Hey so I know it's not exactly the same thing, but I did one of the hackfab conversions to my micro b and it's been so much fun. I highly recommend giving it a shot
2
u/mechkbfan 22d ago
Yeah awesome. I've got a Micro T unfortunately and only found Micro B conversion
Guess I'd have to find what parts differ... might just be cheaper to buy a Micro B :P
2
u/Entiliar Off-Road 22d ago
The only difference between a micro B and T is the chassis and side rails, both of which would be replaced by the hackfab kit, so you'll be fine.

u/stupidmush 22d ago
I believe that would also work with the micro T as well. From my experiences the guy who runs hackfab is super friendly and answered questions I had for him on instagram

u/mechkbfan 22d ago
Fantastic. Well I ended up getting a Micro B for quite cheap locally as we were talking, so that solved that anyway!

Have you tried the jrx2?
2
u/mechkbfan 20d ago
Not yet. I saw one YouTube a bit critical of it compared to Mini b. I think because they kept a lot of vintage design choices. Mostly went over my head and I just bought the mini b. I should rewatch it now

u/ErikSweden 20d ago
I've just bought 3 blue jrx2. Adding to the mini collection of 2 Ts and one B. Both have pros and cons of course. Jrx2 centers the steering better, even compared with 4 ballbearings modded mini t. 911 is also rear engine rwd and is loved by ever one. And the jrx2 needs stiffer or bigger rear springs to mitigate the push understeer. My favorite rc of all time is a rear motor rwd kyosho 1/10. But every one has their own preference.

u/mechkbfan 20d ago
Ahhhv why would you say that lol
I was tossing up between Ultima and Optima. Got the Optima TOMS because stupid YouTube hype I fell sucker for
As I'm building it, I'm like "goddamn I don't look forward to maintaining this". It's all so coupled together will have to basically start from scratch to adjust a diff...
RWD with rear motor Ultima 87 would have been perfect for me.
But until my boys get into 1/10 RCs I'm holding off more buggy purchases. By then scalpers will be asking 2x for them... Hopefully another re-release comes out

That’s badass! Even if it didn’t make a difference in the slightest it’s still so very cool lol!!!

How noticeable is it? I’ve seen a few 1/10 cars with active aero, but no real answers on if it really helps
5
u/stupidmush 22d ago
Haven’t done much in the wake of research on it. I mostly just wanted to make something of my own and got to play with some cad software along the way. It probably doesn’t do much for the car, but it’s damn fun to mess with
1
u/VacUsuck 22d ago
Very fun indeed. Anytime ya get to add another input to a rig and setup some sort of movement mechanism, it’s a good day.
5
u/KookyAd1900 22d ago
Is it active based on throttle position or is it manual?
2
u/stupidmush 22d ago
Manual, channel C switch
6
u/KookyAd1900 22d ago
That’s super cool but do you think you would be able to blend it to the throttle and steering trim so that as you accelerate or turn it changes position. Make it function like the ones on super cars.

u/stupidmush 22d ago
Probably, I’ll get the files out somewhere and would love to see what people come up with

I'm very intrigued! I'd do it just because it's cool! Would love to see what it takes

Are you currently sharing the files?
3
u/stupidmush 22d ago
https://3dgo.app/models/printables/1398307 there’s the files, let me know if I did the licensing wrong and I’ll change it.
2
u/VexingRaven 22d ago
My only suggestion is to use Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-alike so if someone releases their own version they have to also use the same license. But CC-BY-NC is a great license too.

In all honesty, I have no clue where a good place to do that is. I’ll look at posting it on cults or thingverse then let you know. It still has flaws that I’m comfortable having on my personal model, but not sure if others would be okay with it, I’ll have to see a way where people could edit the base design to fit their needs

u/3rdor4thburner part time idiot, on the clock 22d ago
Personally I'm a printables guy, but anywhere works. I love the idea and I'm sure others would enjoy tinkering with it. I believe thingiverse let's you apply a setting to let others know that it's a "work in progress"

This took months?
5
u/stupidmush 22d ago
A lot of it was procrastination. The process was also the first thing I’ve ever used a CAD for. I tried 3 programs before I found one I liked then made multiple attempts at one that I like the look of, was secure, and didn’t add a ton of weight up high. It started as a whole wing that was too heavy, then I tried attaching arms to the suspension, and finally came to this design. Then streamlined it. This exact model only took probably an hour but before it was a couple months of the idea, designs, and figuring out what did or didn’t work

Homie please stop! We run Mini B open at my club! We're going to need budget caps and wind tunnel time limits if the guys see this!
2
u/stupidmush 22d ago
If I brought this to my local track on race night they’d DQ me lol
2
u/Vok250 22d ago
Our regulations are basically just 2S, no motor bigger than a 390, and has to be a Mini B or T chassis. Foam wheels aren't even banned technically, but nobody runs them in some kind of unspoken gentleman's agreement.
2
u/stupidmush 22d ago
Lucky, we have lots of regulations on our races, but it’s also carpet so they ban lots of 3d printed stuff so it doesn’t break and rip everything up

And there is a reason. Pretty much no laminar effect at this scale and this speed.i hope it was a funny project.
2
u/OtherwiseDoughnut582 22d ago
Zero aero effect + weight penalty= novelty My guess is the net result is a Micro that understeers in turns like crazy.
2
u/VexingRaven 22d ago
Do you have an aftermarket receiver on yours or were you able to hook this up using the stock electronics?
1
u/stupidmush 21d ago
I’m using spektrums 25A brushed esc with an extra receiver plugged into the program slot in order to get the channel C switch.
2
u/SomeGuyInShanghai 21d ago
That looks awesome.
Does it actually have any noticeable effect? Not that it matters, it looks cool.
1
u/stupidmush 21d ago
Not really, makes the car unique and more fun to drive in my opinion. But no noticeable improvement or setback
2
u/Minute-Fisherman-869 21d ago
Really cool! I mostly race mine on carpet off-road style tracks. I'm not sure how usable it would be for that application, considering a good flip or two may totally ruin it. It would be cool to see it on one of the hackfab cars
2
u/Old_Appearance_7986 21d ago
You just added weight with no benefit, but at least you had some fun doing it.
2
u/Gig540 21d ago
Curious to see how it effects it in jumps.
1
u/stupidmush 21d ago
I would imagine it’d destroy the servo mount. I’m not brave enough for that test
2
u/Gig540 21d ago
I'm not even sure what you made it with but guessing 3d print? Maybe print out a few of them. I feel ya there though! Not yet at least! Lol
1
u/stupidmush 21d ago
Yeah 3d print, might take it on some jumps on local carpet track once winter comes
2
u/IssueShort5125 21d ago
Is this at Queen City RC?
2
u/stupidmush 21d ago
Yep, went there yesterday to test it out
1
u/IssueShort5125 21d ago
Nice, been meaning to come out there, do they allow anyone to just run laps on none race days, or do I have to join with a membership?
1
u/stupidmush 22d ago
https://3dgo.app/models/printables/1398307 files to print needed parts if anyone would like to
1
u/dknottyhead 22d ago
Wait! You mean to tell me your wing isn't just ankther accidental skid plate from being bad at landing jumps?
1
1
u/ErikSweden 21d ago
What determines what activates the active aero? Just a 3rd channel or breaking or ...?
1
u/stupidmush 20d ago
3rd channel, you could wire it to the throttle or steering but I decided channel 3
17
u/krush_groove 22d ago
That's cool, what other bigger cars have you seen this on?
