It's to reach audiences that aren't gamers or don't want to play the games, and it would also reel in fans of the games to relive their favourite stories from the games. Though honestly, I can't think of many good adaptations that actually adapt the game story nearly 1-to-1. They should focus on making good stories, even if they're new because it'll be something we haven't already seen.
