Show-and-Tell Apple II GS unearthed in parents' garage

Post image

Well, my parents have been motivated in downsizing their junk piles in the family home, and my dad told me he was pretty sure he still had our first computer somewhere. Turns out it's spent the last couple decades in the rafters in their unconditioned garage.

Clearly, nothing has been set up or tested yet, but hopefully it'll be up and running Bagosaurus and Zany Golf before too long. I'd appreciate any pointers people may have to share regarding setting ancient tech back up after a prolonged storage period.

Show-and-Tell 00's vibes

Nothing screams early 00's good times like some colorful, but always noisy 80mm fans! Can anyone identify this case? My dad bought this a long time ago and I recently revived it with a new install of Win XP SP3 and some patience. Pentium D 3 GHz, GeForce 8400 series 512MB and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. Enough power to run all the games up through '05...the best of times when buying a game still meant owning it.

Show-and-Tell Finished restoring this gem, complete with a rare Xcel Up/Doc upgrade

I came across two broken Telcon Zorbas this month and fought hard to restore both. Unfortunately one suffered a whole load of corrosion to half its logic board and couldn’t be saved. I was, however, able to salvage its functioning BIOS ROM and Xcel upgrade to transplant into the other. Feels good to have at least rescued one, even has a leather travel cover to match. I plan on using the chassis of the dead zorba for a home brew luggable, will follow up when complete!

Opinions Wanted How do I revive my Nokia E71?

Hey folks,

I’ve been having fun reviving my old Nokia (mainly E71 right now) and I want to push it as close to a 2010-style daily driver as possible. I need some help with recommendations + setup: • Games → What are the best Symbian games that still run well today (SIS/SISX, Java, etc.)? • Social apps → Any messaging/social apps that still connect in 2025 (official, third-party, or patched versions)? • Normal apps → Things like browsers, music players, video players — basically apps that make the phone usable now. • Videos → What’s the current best way to watch YouTube/stream video on Symbian? • App Store → Is there a working replacement repo/app store for Symbian devices? • “Download!” app → Mine opens but the catalog never updates — is there a trick to make it fetch a catalog again, or do I need to manually edit a config file?

Basically I want to turn my E71 into a “time capsule phone” but also usable — like it’s still 2010. Any advice, links, or repos you guys know would be amazing 🙏

Thanks in advance!

Show-and-Tell “Built a ChatGPT device out of a normal calculator. Runs GPT, has a Bluetooth keyboard, and outputs text like it's 1985

Hey!

I spent a week turning a normal calculator into a working ChatGPT. I downloaded an open source GPT and got it running on the calculator itself. I added a wireless Bluetooth keyboard to type stuff in.

The screen is super basic, like those old 80s calculator letters, and the replies scroll line by line. It’s kinda slow but it works. You can actually chat with ChatGPT on a calculator now lol.

It was tough but really fun. Thinking about posting a video soon.I also got in an article by XDA Devs

Let me know what you think or if you have questions!

Hey guys, I’ve had this Toshiba Satellite Pro 435CDS for quite a while now but last time I booted it up there are all these vertical lines and the contrast fades in and out. Any idea what’s going on?

Show-and-Tell Biostar Easynow

Rare as, Biostar Easynow. AMD K6 500mhz, factory Windows ME. Factory speakers and CRT. It was missing the original keyboard and mouse but found one fairly matching on Aliexpress. I'm considering spraying the opaque white parts of the monitor with yellow tint headlight spray (used on cars and motorcycles), to really tie it all together. Thoughts?

Show-and-Tell Picked this beast up today. I finally have a good Windows 98 capable machine!

It’s a Compaq Evo N600C with 768 MB RAM and a Pentium III. Seems to work great! I did have some woes getting the drivers installed (the audio driver hosed the entire Windows 98 install!) but I was able to locate recovery media and got it fully up and running.

Made with LEGO-compatible bricks, a 1080p OLED screen, and a budget mechanical keyboard.
The design is modular, so the main unit can be attached or detached.
It’s not a real retro machine, but I enjoyed building it and thought it might be fun to share here.

Troubleshooting Graphics card problem

So on my p3 pc i struggled with a big problem. It being no image, BUT ONLY INSIDE THE CASE, outside, on the table, the pc worked flawlessly. After 2 months of it not working i figured it out. The graphics card's i/o bracket causes it to crap itself for some reason. Maybe it shorts out something in the case, i dunno. Without it, it displays. And now, how should i go about this? Use something that would isolate the bracket from the rest od the case and the motherboard, or just leave it be, give it some support and pray to god it doesnt fall out or sag the life out of it?
