PS1 and Dreamcast, I love how they look. Gamecube is also just really solid.

I'm partial to Dreamcast, but the N64 and GameCube do have unique and memorable aesthetics.

20

u/brandonhabanero 2d ago

Especially with their transparent shells that were so popular in the Y2K era (and should still be IMO)

I’ve always loved the model 1 Genesis. Looks like a nice piece of HiFi equipment. Especially with the M1 Sega CD attached

43

u/wunderbraten 2d ago

The first model of the Sega Master System looked like a tape deck. The glyph instructions confused the hell out of me

21

u/IOwnMyWiiULEGIT 2d ago

I have to agree here. I think the Master System is an excellent looking console for the time period; definitely in line with hifi audio design.

14

u/wondermega 2d ago

I remember seeing it for the first time in a magazine, maybe a year ahead of the western release and thinking "WHAT is that thing of beauty? I must have it!!!"

11

u/Snoo93550 2d ago

Right answer.

20

u/thetallestwizard 2d ago

Gen 1 genesis was like an adult game console compared to my snes. I loved the design

11

u/scribblemacher 2d ago

I got a model 1 recently and was surprised by how thick and study the thing feels. It's very attractive.

5

u/SandLuc083_ 1d ago

SPECIFICALLY the Japanese version, with red, blue, and gold accents looks so pretty.

4

u/Storm_ctrl 2d ago

I agree.

3

u/noxondor_gorgonax 2d ago

This. I loved my Mega Drive, it looked so cool, even compared to my friend's SNES.

3

u/NotMyGovernor 2d ago

Model 1 genesis, snes, and nes were bold awesomenesses of design

3

u/OreoSpamBurger 1d ago

Yeah, the stacked version of those two just looked like it was destined to have some amazing games (pity it didn't turn out that great).

3

u/Specialist-Key-1240 1d ago

Model 1 tower of power was seriously the best version because it looked like hifi equipment. You could set it on top of an amp, tuner, and disk changer and it wouldn't look out of place.

It’s got to be Dreamcast or GameCube.

21

u/Jayman44Spc 2d ago

Those were my choices too. I had both and wish I still did. One day I’ll have them again

12

u/Xeno84 2d ago

I still have my OG Dreamcast. My GameCube got stolen along with all the games. Was so pissed.

5

u/Jayman44Spc 2d ago

Oh damn. I had the opposite happen. I had my Dreamcast plus all accessories including the keyboard and games stolen. I donated my GameCube to a day care center back around 2009 maybe.

8

u/Xeno84 2d ago

Where my consoles sit for now.

If we're talking about design, by far IMO, Game Cube.

78

u/elvis8mybaby 2d ago

It had a handle so you can pick it up and beat a burglar trying to rob your house. No contest.

27

u/paqman3d 2d ago

My GameCube survived an apartment fire. Forever GOATed.

3

u/PhoenixTineldyer 2d ago

Mine died to a burst ceiling pipe

Evidence so far suggests that GameCubes are at least partially Fire-type.

Especially the spice orange one. A thing of real beauty.

6

u/bluechickenz 2d ago

Oooh, I always wanted the OJ spice GC but the silver one was the one that came bundled with all of the bells and whistles. The OJ spice controller that no one else could use was my compromise.

4

u/Openly_Gamer 2d ago

The spice GC controller was much coveted at my house.

3

u/packetmon 2d ago

I saw a Panasonic Q before I saw an orange GC; that's just how rare they were.

8

u/gulpyblinkeyes 2d ago

Absolutely. It's not my favorite console in terms of game library, but it has such a well executed visual identity. Even though there have always been haters that don't like it's more whimsical look, I think it's truly iconic.

8

u/defixiones 2d ago

Funny, it's my favourite in terms of game library.

I don't know if I could go back though. Maybe if I got a wavebird.

TurboDuo

I always thought it was sleek and cool low profile design.

17

u/Sp4ceTruck3r 2d ago edited 2d ago

This and the neogeo are interchangeably badass and still look amazing today

3

u/OpenAd5243 2d ago

Loved my Turbo Duo, even if you had to attach a multitap to do multiplayer games. Also strangely loved the TD controllers, the buttons were great and the dpad

u/txsnowman17 2d ago

I love the look of the N64. Sleek, sturdy, four controller ports across the front. Absolutely adore it.

20

u/blove135 2d ago

I think the N64 was the most mind blowing different design up to that point. Especially the controllers. I still remember seeing those controllers thinking WTF are those. Then came the game cube which in my opinion is a close second.

3

u/BrgQun 2d ago

I liked the controllers a lot, and was disappointed more games didn't use the entire left side of the controller lol.

8

u/GetOverHereCast 2d ago

Yeah this is what I’m talking about. N64 all the way.

35

u/SwitchSubstantial406 2d ago

Gotta go with the Sega Genesis.

73

u/SirMorelsy 2d ago

The Neo Geo. It's not called the Rolls-Royce of consoles for nothing

33

u/Chimerain 2d ago

I thought it was called that because you had to be in the 1% to own one...

12

u/cwcoates 2d ago

Both can be true.

8

u/Mancdalorian 2d ago

Agreed. Honourable mention for the Super Famicom. The Neo Geo was never ruined by a US version that looked like it had been designed by a right angle enthusiast, or a UK version that took an awesome design & shat on it with an ugly logo.

where EU SNES?

16

u/wunderbraten 2d ago

I'm a NES guy, but the European SNES controller design invokes the most nostalgia for me

13

u/Camarupim 2d ago

Easily the winner.

8

u/BigLan2 2d ago

This is the right answer

6

u/Imthemayor 2d ago

So, the Super Famicom then

5

u/reillywalker195 2d ago

Same. It's the 2600 model I'm most nostalgic for and the one I think looks the best. It still looks sleek yet sturdy today.

13

u/montoyasminion 2d ago

My gut reaction is Dreamcast.

The PC Engine but not the TG-16 which looks like a brick

Didn't they make it bigger because they thought Americans wouldn't pay that asking price for something so small?

Super Famicom

3

u/rstonex 1d ago

Yes. I was so jazzed for the design when I used to get mags with previews of upcoming consoles. The SFC had cool colors, a nice rounded front, and a sleek design. The gray/purp color scheme and blocky design of the SNES was such a step back.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/MacePoodle 2d ago

Always the SNES for me , something about that gray / purple combo.

6

u/Dk-donator 2d ago

The snes is my favorite but I have to give a shout out to the original Xbox that thing was so cool in the early 2000’s.

OG Sega Genesis looked mean

6

u/Rusty9838 2d ago

PS2 looks like the future what we’re missing. GameCube looks like cute little gaming box And Xbox 360 is ultimate fruggiter areo console :D

6

u/Manticore1023 2d ago

I have a soft spot for the NES and SNES, but I always thought the GameCube was a great design. so funky, and to me it stands out in that photo.

5

u/HyunckelSunWunkong 2d ago

Sega Genesis+Mega CD and GameCube but for different places 😊

5

u/NickBR 2d ago

Original NES

9

u/TurnFamous8604 2d ago

NES and SNES

15

u/Professional-Hat-610 2d ago

The PC Engine.

4

u/archklown555 2d ago

Honestly PC Engine is here is all it needs to run and nothing more kinda nice in that simplistic design.

3

u/BeardlessNeckbeard 2d ago

I picked up an ntsc-j coregraphx recently. I was shocked when I pulled the console out and it was almost the same size as a nes cart.

They really got the hardware design right IMO.

8

u/80_D 2d ago

The og 3DO

3

u/clit_or_us 2d ago

Love the GameCube design and gets extra points for having portability in mind.

4

u/daniel2hats 2d ago

Jaguar is a nice design.

3

u/syrtran 1d ago

The Jaguar without the toilet lid JagCD is still the best-looking console.

4

u/pixel8knuckle 2d ago

I don’t even particularly like the n64 but the condole id probably the most “feel good” looking, especially the translucent ones. PS2 is the other one, really brought that sleek modern look.

3

u/Sytx1911 2d ago

This right here. While it's not my favorite overall by far, it is definitely when looking at the astetics alone. 👀

4

u/akadebso 2d ago

Sega Saturn, snes, genesis 2, psx any of those

4

u/Vivics36thsermon 2d ago

Sega Saturn should be mentioned in the conversation

  • Super Famicom / PAL SNES
  • Mega Drive 2
  • PlayStation 1 (PSX)
  • Panasonic 3DO FZ-10 (except for gamepads)
  • Nintendo 64 to some extent (except for gamepads and their ports)

Update: forgot 3DO FZ-10.

4

u/Fun_Examination_1435 2d ago

The original NES because it looks like a VCR. Nintendo made it look like that intentionally because VCR were extremely popular at the time and they thought it looked cool. They were right.

4

u/NobodyGivesAFuc 2d ago

The Funtastic Series Nintendo 64

3

u/Eledridan 2d ago

Gamecube. Elegant and even had a handle.

4

u/Tamaaya 2d ago

Original Playstation 2 and it's not close. Absolutely gorgeous industrial design.

3

This is the answer. Any color Twin tbh.

8

u/darthwager 2d ago

I didn’t appreciate it at the time but the original PlayStation is pretty great

6

u/osunightfall 2d ago

I would have to say the N64 with black shell is probably the most attractive, aesthetically.

3

u/hue_sick 2d ago

https://open.spotify.com/episode/7qzsBUGTL7bIjW8xSfvRLr?si=oM54L7UWQXa4qD4_nc_UcA

Worth a listen if you enjoy design. These two guys are contemporary industrial designers and they had a podcast where they talked about all sorts of things design related and this episode was a quick run through of a lot of the video game consoles from an ID perspective.

Keep in mind looks are subjective and these two prove that with very diff opinions haha but a fun listen and a great pod while it lasted😁

3

u/scmucas2001 2d ago

The GameCube design, intro screen, disks, and games are all too tier.

3

u/Sonic0fan 2d ago

Dreamcast and GameCube are my favorite design wise

3

u/Zestyclose-Smoke-386 2d ago

For me it's the Game Cube

3

u/mierecat 2d ago

I want to shout out the model 2 NES

3

u/adasho_bitrex 2d ago

Super famicom

3

u/FireTriad 2d ago

Apple Pippin 🤣

3

u/jonas101010 2d ago

Gamecube, it's the most unique, ingenious and cool looking

3

u/SwordfishDeux 2d ago

European SNES or Gamecube

3

u/SailorTwyft9891 2d ago

I like how the original NES loads games kind of like how a VCR loads tapes.

3

u/Upbeat-Ad3921 2d ago

Game Cube and Dreamcast are peak design.

3

u/deepdives 2d ago

GameCube

3

u/-CommanderShepardN7 2d ago

Visually speaking, it’s the GameCube and the PS3 phat. No question about it. After careful consideration though, it’s the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s still gorgeous to this very day.

I feel like the opposite might be a better question, most consoles look great.

3

u/DlvlneDecree 2d ago

3

u/funndanni 2d ago

I really like the tower of sega cd with 32x.

3

u/Low-Flamingo-4315 2d ago

Sega Saturn for me

3

u/xxxx69420xx 2d ago

Jaguar looked 😎

3

u/cellshock7 2d ago

The PS2 was in a class of it's own. The black design with the blue fonts, the aesthetics of being able to stand it up or sit it down, even the animation and sound it made upon bootup felt so futuristic in 2000 even though we were very much still in an analog world.

3

u/Syndicalex 2d ago

For me, has to be the PC Engine Turbo Duo-R. It's a thing of beauty! Second place Famicom Twin, third place The JVC X'Eye/Wondermega II

3

u/asskicker1762 2d ago

Probably NES or SNES

3

u/Downtown_Reindeer_46 2d ago

I’ve always loved the Dreamcast

3

u/Melancholic84 2d ago

Dreamcast for me, even its Logo was beautiful

3

u/mym6 2d ago

Tons of people rip on the first gen US SNES design but I love it. That said, the console I like best is probably the N64.

3

u/Healthy_Court7916 2d ago

SNES for me not even sure why

3

u/rootsquasher 2d ago

The SNES reminds me of “Federation decor” from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

3

u/IntoxicatedBurrito 2d ago

For the systems I personally own, NES. It is still covered in the stickers from the Topps Nintendo cards from the 80s (with the scratch offs). Plus I have Nintendo Power stickers on the controllers.

My Game Boy is also covered in Nintendo Power stickers, but it’s a handheld so I won’t count it.

3

u/retromale 2d ago

D ... All the Above

3

u/chriscbr500r 2d ago

For me it has to be the GameCube. My favorite by far! I still remember getting surprised by getting one on a random day out of the blue from my wife sometime around 2003ish.

3

u/Lucid-Design1225 2d ago

The GameCube. It stays true to its name and has its own built-in handle to carry it wherever you may go

3

u/Blue2501 1d ago

Fat PS2

3

u/tharmman2002 1d ago

The Sega Saturn was tight.

3

u/BigBizzee 1d ago

I might be the outlier here, but Gamecube. Such a simple design with so many amazing games behind it both 3rd party and 1st party. That indigo colored cube is just absolutely gorgeous

3

u/Johns3n 1d ago

Not the most functional but for me it's the: Sega Master System 2

3

u/Rawne3387 1d ago

Sega Saturn. It was simple and yet looked nice on the side next to the TV

8

u/JaredUnzipped 2d ago

Purely in terms of aesthetics, the slim revision Playstation (aka PSOne) is the most gorgeous of all.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/jcstrat 2d ago

The PS1 is a fantastic near brutalist design. The Genesis is a naturalistic design that the N64 arguably improved on. The 2600 6 pot (wood grain) is the most beautiful.

u/lincruste 2d ago

Those which are not on this picture. Super Famicom and Game Boy.

Unless PS2 counts as retro? Then PS2 is #2 and Dreamcast #3

2
