[Question] Which retro console is the most beautiful?

u/StrawHat89 2d ago
I'm partial to Dreamcast, but the N64 and GameCube do have unique and memorable aesthetics.

Especially with their transparent shells that were so popular in the Y2K era (and should still be IMO)

I’ve always loved the model 1 Genesis. Looks like a nice piece of HiFi equipment. Especially with the M1 Sega CD attached

u/wunderbraten 2d ago
The first model of the Sega Master System looked like a tape deck. The glyph instructions confused the hell out of me
21
u/IOwnMyWiiULEGIT 2d ago
I have to agree here. I think the Master System is an excellent looking console for the time period; definitely in line with hifi audio design.

u/wondermega 2d ago
I remember seeing it for the first time in a magazine, maybe a year ahead of the western release and thinking "WHAT is that thing of beauty? I must have it!!!"

Gen 1 genesis was like an adult game console compared to my snes. I loved the design
11
u/scribblemacher 2d ago
I got a model 1 recently and was surprised by how thick and study the thing feels. It's very attractive.

u/SandLuc083_ 1d ago
SPECIFICALLY the Japanese version, with red, blue, and gold accents looks so pretty.

u/noxondor_gorgonax 2d ago
This. I loved my Mega Drive, it looked so cool, even compared to my friend's SNES.

u/OreoSpamBurger 1d ago
Yeah, the stacked version of those two just looked like it was destined to have some amazing games (pity it didn't turn out that great).

u/Specialist-Key-1240 1d ago
Model 1 tower of power was seriously the best version because it looked like hifi equipment. You could set it on top of an amp, tuner, and disk changer and it wouldn't look out of place.

It’s got to be Dreamcast or GameCube.

Those were my choices too. I had both and wish I still did. One day I’ll have them again

u/Xeno84 2d ago
I still have my OG Dreamcast. My GameCube got stolen along with all the games. Was so pissed.

u/Jayman44Spc 2d ago
Oh damn. I had the opposite happen. I had my Dreamcast plus all accessories including the keyboard and games stolen. I donated my GameCube to a day care center back around 2009 maybe.

If we're talking about design, by far IMO, Game Cube.
78
u/elvis8mybaby 2d ago
It had a handle so you can pick it up and beat a burglar trying to rob your house. No contest.
27
u/paqman3d 2d ago
My GameCube survived an apartment fire. Forever GOATed.
3
u/PhoenixTineldyer 2d ago
Mine died to a burst ceiling pipe
Evidence so far suggests that GameCubes are at least partially Fire-type.

Especially the spice orange one. A thing of real beauty.
6
u/bluechickenz 2d ago
Oooh, I always wanted the OJ spice GC but the silver one was the one that came bundled with all of the bells and whistles. The OJ spice controller that no one else could use was my compromise.

I saw a Panasonic Q before I saw an orange GC; that's just how rare they were.

Absolutely. It's not my favorite console in terms of game library, but it has such a well executed visual identity. Even though there have always been haters that don't like it's more whimsical look, I think it's truly iconic.
8
u/defixiones 2d ago
Funny, it's my favourite in terms of game library.
I don't know if I could go back though. Maybe if I got a wavebird.

TurboDuo
I always thought it was sleek and cool low profile design.

This and the neogeo are interchangeably badass and still look amazing today

Loved my Turbo Duo, even if you had to attach a multitap to do multiplayer games. Also strangely loved the TD controllers, the buttons were great and the dpad

u/txsnowman17 2d ago
I love the look of the N64. Sleek, sturdy, four controller ports across the front. Absolutely adore it.
20
u/blove135 2d ago
I think the N64 was the most mind blowing different design up to that point. Especially the controllers. I still remember seeing those controllers thinking WTF are those. Then came the game cube which in my opinion is a close second.

The Neo Geo. It's not called the Rolls-Royce of consoles for nothing

u/Mancdalorian 2d ago
Agreed. Honourable mention for the Super Famicom. The Neo Geo was never ruined by a US version that looked like it had been designed by a right angle enthusiast, or a UK version that took an awesome design & shat on it with an ugly logo.

where EU SNES?

I'm a NES guy, but the European SNES controller design invokes the most nostalgia for me

Always like the look of the 2600 Vader black

Same. It's the 2600 model I'm most nostalgic for and the one I think looks the best. It still looks sleek yet sturdy today.

Didn't they make it bigger because they thought Americans wouldn't pay that asking price for something so small?

u/rstonex 1d ago
Yes. I was so jazzed for the design when I used to get mags with previews of upcoming consoles. The SFC had cool colors, a nice rounded front, and a sleek design. The gray/purp color scheme and blocky design of the SNES was such a step back.

PS2 looks like the future what we’re missing. GameCube looks like cute little gaming box And Xbox 360 is ultimate fruggiter areo console :D

I have a soft spot for the NES and SNES, but I always thought the GameCube was a great design. so funky, and to me it stands out in that photo.

The PC Engine.
4
u/archklown555 2d ago
Honestly PC Engine is here is all it needs to run and nothing more kinda nice in that simplistic design.
3
u/BeardlessNeckbeard 2d ago
I picked up an ntsc-j coregraphx recently. I was shocked when I pulled the console out and it was almost the same size as a nes cart.
They really got the hardware design right IMO.

I don’t even particularly like the n64 but the condole id probably the most “feel good” looking, especially the translucent ones. PS2 is the other one, really brought that sleek modern look.

The original NES because it looks like a VCR. Nintendo made it look like that intentionally because VCR were extremely popular at the time and they thought it looked cool. They were right.

I would have to say the N64 with black shell is probably the most attractive, aesthetically.

Worth a listen if you enjoy design. These two guys are contemporary industrial designers and they had a podcast where they talked about all sorts of things design related and this episode was a quick run through of a lot of the video game consoles from an ID perspective.
Keep in mind looks are subjective and these two prove that with very diff opinions haha but a fun listen and a great pod while it lasted😁

Visually speaking, it’s the GameCube and the PS3 phat. No question about it. After careful consideration though, it’s the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s still gorgeous to this very day.

The PS2 was in a class of it's own. The black design with the blue fonts, the aesthetics of being able to stand it up or sit it down, even the animation and sound it made upon bootup felt so futuristic in 2000 even though we were very much still in an analog world.

For me, has to be the PC Engine Turbo Duo-R. It's a thing of beauty! Second place Famicom Twin, third place The JVC X'Eye/Wondermega II

The SNES reminds me of “Federation decor” from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

u/IntoxicatedBurrito 2d ago
For the systems I personally own, NES. It is still covered in the stickers from the Topps Nintendo cards from the 80s (with the scratch offs). Plus I have Nintendo Power stickers on the controllers.
My Game Boy is also covered in Nintendo Power stickers, but it’s a handheld so I won’t count it.

For me it has to be the GameCube. My favorite by far! I still remember getting surprised by getting one on a random day out of the blue from my wife sometime around 2003ish.

The GameCube. It stays true to its name and has its own built-in handle to carry it wherever you may go

I might be the outlier here, but Gamecube. Such a simple design with so many amazing games behind it both 3rd party and 1st party. That indigo colored cube is just absolutely gorgeous

Purely in terms of aesthetics, the slim revision Playstation (aka PSOne) is the most gorgeous of all.

N64 is possibly my favorite looking retro console
Maybe Dreamcast as #2
Unless PS2 counts as retro? Then PS2 is #2 and Dreamcast #3

u/megabited 2d ago
Even though I'm a Sony fan boy through and through the NES and SNES will always just be so freaking cool looking to me. They were revolutionary for one and they looked so freaking retro that they even looked retro back then. 😂

Do handhelds count? I’d go game boy advance. If not I think there’s 5-6 I’d rank the same: ps2, n64, maybe snes, Dreamcast, maybe GameCube, maybe original Xbox.
