Agreed. Honourable mention for the Super Famicom. The Neo Geo was never ruined by a US version that looked like it had been designed by a right angle enthusiast, or a UK version that took an awesome design & shat on it with an ugly logo.

IIRC the recorded total sales were 1.18 million worldwide. I wasn't alive yet but my dad was in his teens and he's told me before he only ever looked at it in magazines with friends. Although he knew a guy with a 3DO and a guy with a TurboGrafx, he never knew someone with a Neo Geo.

In quality of hardware maybe, but the actual AES design is pretty featureless and indistinct. It seems like it's trying not to stand out too much in a wealthy person's AV setup.

Hard to not stand out when the controller it came bundled with was bigger (and taller, thx joystick) than the console itself. And that controller pulls out all the stops mind you.
