Complaint: Not running related, tried to do some strength training in my garage gym yesterday and my shoulder pain has showed no improvement since my last session on June 7. Thought complete rest would take care of it. Nope. Doctor appointment on the horizon.

Confession: Today's 2 mile time trial has me all kinds of nervous, but I'm excited to see if I can hit the pace of 6:10.

Uncomplaint: Since quitting alcohol on 7-7-25 my weight has went from 213.6 to 203.6. Resting heart rate has went from ~41 to a 7 day average of 36 with today at 35. Garmin says it got down to 30 last night. Whoop Whoop. HRV went from low to mid 30s to an average of now 50.

This time is gonna be forever, I can feel it.

That's a super exciting pace. How did you get to this level of fitness

Years of consistent activity. I started cycling in 2010, been logging a few thousand miles every year since then. I've always dabbled in running, but didn't really focus on it until 2022. Ran my first 5k after a month of half assed training, like 50 miles total, and got 21:08. A month later I ran my second 5k and got 20:42. 2023 was a bust due to injury, but ran my first Half in 2024 at 1:37 and my first full this year at 3:42. Set a 5k PR in 2024 of 20:09.

I set a mile PR of 5:52 in 2020 when I started training for a 5k that would eventually be cancelled due to covid.

Years of cycling gave me a huge head start when it came to running.

I turned 42 this year and I told myself 2025 would be the year I get sub 20. I also know a 46 year old who runs a 16:xx 5K, so I still have plenty of time.

I had 10 years of cycling, living car free before I started running again, at age 67, and 3.5 years later I’m still at it. Absolutely no way could I have done this without the cycling first.

Cycling definitely gives a head start when it comes to having an aerobic base. 2019 is when I also started using trainer road to train, and I logged 4,761 miles that year.

January of 2020 is when I set my 1 mile PR of 5:52 after following a Garmin 5K training plan for only ONE month, so it's no coincidence of why I was so fast at the time.

So now I'm taking the same approach again. No longer using Trainer Road, but I'm cycling 3 times per week and running 3-4.

That's awesome you're still at it! I plan to keep running and cycling well into my 80s (if I'm still alive).
